***Julian

Mute?

Fuck how did I miss that? I thought she was just shy. I felt oblivious as I lay on the couch, staring at the open ceiling. Moonlight crept through the windows, dancing along the old wooden panels and my eyes followed up the stairs, leading to the loft. I gave her the bed tonight. Wanted her to be relaxed… at least as much as she could in a strange cabin. Alone with a strange man.

I rubbed the strain, tightening along my shoulders down the back of my neck.

It wasn’t just her. I didn’t know if something... somethings were outside, waiting. Based on the look of her battered body, someone was after her. And soon they would be looking for her. I’d ask her about the scars… those nasty bruises, but not now. By the looks of things, not only was her torment fresh but prolonged. Who knows how long her torture had lasted. She’d been through enough and what she needed was rest, not probing from a stranger or interrogative questions coming from a man she didn’t even know.

Men did this to her. Fingers reached around the loaded double barrel, sitting beside the couch. I huffed in silent fury... issuing a silent promise as I gripped my gun.

So, there were werewolves… people that shifted out in the thick of the forest. Is that what I was only now realizing?

Were there unicorns too? I snickered stupidly to myself.

My thoughts trailed back to her eyes. Those startling lilac eyes. I pictured her face as sleep took hold. An odd sensation rumbled in my chest, a warmth I hadn't felt in a long time.

But I needed to rest, needed to get her out of my head. Morning would soon rise and there was work to do. Couldn't be wasting my time on a woman that would soon be out of my house... and out of my life.

***Fiona

Gilded morning rays streamed through the cabin skylights, and it took me a moment to realize where I was. Then I remembered the hunter.

The loft was simple, neat and cozy, just what I expected from him. I vaguely remembered falling asleep last night. Think I took one look at that bed and I surrendered. Surrendered my body to the plush velvety mattress that cuddled and collapsed around my torso.

The hunter had given me some medicine before I turned in for the night and the ache only dulled slightly while I slept. But now agony was awake and bright eyed, gripping my shoulder with a vengeance. The pain pummeled down my arm and back. I needed more drugs. I knew I said we’d leave by morning, but I didn’t know how far I would get with this useless arm.

“A couple more days then. But that’s it,” Kaia replied in my head. I nodded.

“I’m not afraid of him. He’s not like the others,” she added. The others. My nails scratched the side of my bare legs, the same place where old scabs bore witness to my anxiousness.

“He did shoot us,” I replied. She shrugged.

“Minor inconvenience,” she smirked. I scoffed, rolling my eyes.

“They’ll be looking for us soon,” I said, flatly. I felt her stiffen inside of me, tensing with the fear I, myself, was trying to hold back.

I opened the bandage, tracing my fingers over the stitches that had already begun healing. A smile fell over my face - he did a decent job. I pulled an old sweater over my head, the material brushing softly against my skin. I didn’t like my arms showing or any portion of my back. Didn’t care for the pity that clouded his eyes when he looked at me.

When anyone looked at me.

I peered over the side of the railing, down into the living room. No hunter. I made my way down the stairs to the kitchen; he wasn’t there either. A pinch of panic hitched against my chest. My breath hastened a little. I didn’t like the thought of being alone.

Another thought blurred my vision. What if they were here already, in the woods? What if they found him? And what if he brought them back to me?

Suddenly, a bitter wind blew through the front door as it swung open. A matte of snow covered his face mask and large winter coat. Thick boots tracked in snowy wet residue, slicking along the wooden floor. His gloved hand pulled up from his side, holding two small carcasses.

“Hope you like rabbit,” he grinned, pulling off the mask as his hair ruffled out the sides.

A breath eased in my chest, relaxing my clenched fists. He was ok... no harm at his door. Not yet at least.

***FionaSleep was restless. A torturous endeavor.I finished cleaning and wrapping his wounds. He fell asleep quickly after the medicine kicked in. It had been an eventful day, but I couldn’t seem to stay asleep knowing I was in the same bed as him. I kept waking every time he shifted or a groan rung out from the pain.Moonlight fell into the room from the skylight above and I watched as his chest rose steadily with each breath. I tucked into him, inhaling that heavenly scent he had about him. Warm and woodsy. I almost lost him today. The memory of him falling between the mountain replayed in my head. What if the slabs hadn’t caught him? What if Kaia couldn't reach him? What if?His body turned towards mine under the blanket and he pressed into me, eyes still shut. I exhaled. The heat from his body radiated and I watched his lips. They parted slightly as calm and quiet breaths slipped through, drifting in a soothing rhythm.I wanted to chart the contours of his face. Wanted to reach

***FionaThe sky stood calm like a virgin canvas without a cloud in sight. A sea of brilliant blue coasted from corner to corner while the forest enveloped us. I stepped through the snow with my borrowed boots, laced tight since they were a couple inches too big.I had never gone out with Julian before. Kaia always took my place, but I felt like I needed to make amends, even something as simple as a stroll with him, to cut the tension. I couldn't stand this new aawkwardness between us. The avoidance and side glances. Could things ever be as they were before? Easy and effortless. No, not after that kiss, I reminded myself with a frown. He walked in front of me as we hiked the trail, shoulders easing only slightly. Occasionally, he’d break off through glades of snow whipped shrubbery to check on a trap. Then continue onto the next one, trudging his way through a new blanket of snow, as high as his knees. We must have taken the scenic route because we wound up on a steeper trail. No ta

  • Hunter and the Silent Wolf   Chapter 11: Anguish

***FionaI couldn’t return his gaze. Not the next morning nor the day after. I tossed and turned in bed, struggling to stop my head from drifting to thoughts of his mouth… his hands. Remembering the way it felt to have his touch. The sounds he drew from my mouth. Knowing he was just below those stairs, sound asleep in that fitted white tee and gray sweatpants. A few feet away and willing to give me everything I wanted. There were no words. No way to explain why I ran out… without having to show him. Anguish rolled through me in shallow, self-deprecating waves. I wanted to scream; I wanted to shout from the top of my lungs. How was I supposed to ever be naked with a man again? Even after running away, Greyson still had this power over me, this invisible noose still hanging around my neck. But Julian… he didn’t make me feel insecure or embarrassed. It felt effortless with him. Easy. And he was so tender, so gentle, all the while keeping that hint of gruffness about him that I secretly a

***JulianBourbon sloshed the bottom of my glass and I threw back a shot as Fiona curled up on the floor in front of the fireplace, teetering among the shelves of books. I sat in the armchair next to her, trying to focus on the novel in front of me. But the task was impossible with her so close. The very thought of someone trying to hurt her, to take her away, had me on edge. I just wanted to protect her… to hold her close. I clenched my fist, straining against the urge to pick her up and throw her onto my bed.I poured another shot. And then another.Fuck it.Heat burned the inside of my chest and warmth radiated. I felt need and want and worry, all the sensations simultaneously flushing every extremity. I stood; my shadow cast against the wooden panels from the flickering flames.I walked over to where she sat. Her shoulders tensed but she didn’t turn around. Slowly, I knelt behind her, lowering my mouth softly to her ear.“Take off your sweater. Show me your wound,” I husked, voice

  • Hunter and the Silent Wolf   Chapter 9: Shut In

***FionaWater beaded from his chest as steam slipped out the opened bathroom door; a towel tucked securely around his waist. It hung low around his hips, low enough that I could see the abdominal muscles bridging towards something… much more enticing.I darted my eyes away but still couldn't keep from glancing over as I chewed the inside of my cheek, trying to keep the heat from flushing to my face.I had never seen him shirtless before. He always wore several layers of clothing. And the view was better than I imagined. His hardened chest ridged like a plate of armor. Abs stenciled with toned muscles grooving over every inch of his torso. His forearms bulged; tattoos etched over his arms, casting full artwork on both sleeves. He ran his hands through his wet tousled hair as dark strands frayed along his fingertips.“Now that’s a man,” Kaia purred inside of me. Again I averted my gaze, drawing back to the book in my lap, yet unable to concentrate on any of the words in front of me.An

  • Hunter and the Silent Wolf   Chapter 8: Stalking

***Fiona“Storm is coming in. I’ll be gone most of the day. Need to stock up before it hits. Not sure how long we’ll be trapped in here,” Julian said as he worked to prepare his pack, complete with his hunting and snow gear.He had been sleeping on the couch for a couple weeks now. Not once did he ask for his room back. He’d come in to grab some things here and there but never complained. Nor had he asked when Kaia and I were leaving. I knew in the back of my mind we would have to go at some point. Couldn't stay here forever. But today wasn't the day.I waved my hands in front of him and dashed to grab a paper. A stack of neatly lined sheets now sat on the corner of the kitchen table next to a jar of pens and freshly sharpened pencils. He chuckled.“Can I come?”His brows turned upward. My shoulder was completely healed now. Only a faint scar remained on both sides from the missed arrow. The one intended to kill me.“You sure? You want to come hunting with me?” he questioned but seemi
