Chapter fifty-six: A new course
Dan opened his eyes and stared at the ceiling of the room. Next to him, Christopher, Darius, and Amira were waiting to see how he would react after almost a week of being unconscious. His wounds had healed completely and the marks of the bomb splinters could barely be seen on his body.
“Dan, how are you feeling?” Christopher asked.
“Welcome back, son,” Darius told him. “Tell us: how do you feel?”
Dan continued to stare at the ceiling without showing any emotion.
“Son, please tell us something!” Amira begged, anguished.
A tear welled up in one of Dan's eyes, then ran down his cheek and ended in his ear.
Christopher guessed that Dan remembered the whole incident as soon as he woke up.
“I see you've remembered everything,” Christopher told him. “I'm so sorry Dan. I'm truly sorry.”
“Son, please tell us how you feel...” Darius asked again.

The day after his meeting with the detectives, Dan received a visit from Norma and Erick at his apartment. The reason: to talk about the attack on his uncle Christopher's house. The day after the confrontation where Brooke and several policemen died, Christopher went to them to tell them that the unknown creature had indeed saved him from the attack of the vampires and that he had woken up in Central Park hidden in some bushes. He told them that he did not know why he had saved him or why he had taken his computer. Norma told him what had happened hours before in the abandoned industrial park and Christopher assumed, given the times and circumstances in which it had appeared, that perhaps this creature is waging a war against vampires and that it is saving humans who are at risk before his presence. “What you're proposing to me is impossible,” Captain Mulligan told Norma when he suggested baiting one of Zander's concubines to get to him.“Think about it, Captain,” Norma insisted. “That's how Brooke Daniels was kidnapped. The vampires escaped through the basement windows of the abandoned house and returned to Zander to be assigned a new lair where they could hide. They were two young men, between sixteen and twenty years old. They couldn't talk to him, since Andrew, who was on his way out, asked them why they were in that house if it was forbidden, and even more so if it wasn't Zander's; they told him the police had gone to search the abandoned house and they had no choice but to flee the place. Andrew thought he had no more hiding places where he could take them, except for the only one they had left in the woods but it was very far, already entering Pennsylvania, and it was reserved for the wildest "renegades". Dan hoped his ability to regenerate would help him prove to Norma that the wound was indeed superficial and did not pose a great risk to him. When they got to his apartment, he quickly went into the bathroom, took a small first aid kit and took out a piece of gauze with which he began to dry the blood that flowed from his wounds. He also applied some alcohol to disinfect it and almost howled in pain.
