Fallon:

“I’m not going down there,” I shot back before any of them could try talking me into it.

All four of them mirrored each other, planting their hands on their waists as they lined up in front of me.

Men, especially, always went after weakness the moment they sensed it.

Cage lifted a brow, looking oddly amused by my attempt to stand my ground.

“ I’m more useful alive than dead,” I added, raising my left hand to show them the wristband. “Your officer already made that pretty clear.”

For a second, all four of them simply stared at me.

Then their eyes narrowed almost in sync.

They exchanged looks before straightening up and breaking into laughter loud enough to crush whatever confidence I had managed to build.

I really didn’t like whatever was going through their heads.

So I lunged.

The second I ripped the gun from Rome’s belt, every single one of them froze.

Then they gasped.

Not out of fear.

More like disbelief.

Or maybe amusement.

“I swear I’ll shoot if any of you come near me,” I warned, gripping the gun with both hands as I pointed it at them.

Not one of them looked remotely threatened.

Cage slowly pushed himself off the seatrest, unfolding his arms with complete calm, while Ace casually rolled his neck like this entire situation bored him.

Then there was Rome and Miguel.

The two stood shoulder to shoulder, staring at me like they genuinely couldn’t believe what I had just done.

Like I had crossed into a new level of stupidity.

“Why does it have to be me? You’re the ones trained for this stuff!” I shot back quickly, trying to redirect the conversation before they focused too hard on the fact that I had just stolen a weapon.

Because judging by their faces, I had seriously fucked up.

“No,” Rome replied as he suddenly stepped closer. “You’re doing it.”

And then he let out a small laugh “ I didn’t think you had the guts to pull a gun at me. Who would’ve thought you had it in you?  If you weren’t Freya. You probably would’ve made a good fighter.”

A good fighter.

Tears blurred my vision. No one told me that anymore since my father died. Ever since then I’d been nothing more than a wolfless burden.

Funny those words came from him. Somehow I wished Nathan were here to hear the Alpha who had rejected him acknowledge me.

Too bad it had to happen like this.

Rome took another step towards me, as if certain I wouldn’t pull the trigger, like I don’t have that in me.

Before I could think, panic pulled the trigger for me.

The shot wasn’t aimed at him directly.

If the gun had fired, the bullet probably would’ve grazed his arm.

But it never happened.

The chamber was empty.

And somehow, that made everything worse.

Because the second I pulled the trigger, every bit of amusement disappeared from their faces.

Miguel, Ace, and Cage slowly shook their heads like they couldn’t believe how stupid I was, while Rome glanced down at his arm before looking back at me.

Then he ripped the gun out of my hands.

The force sent me stumbling backward.

A second later, his hand grabbed the back of my collar, and he started dragging me toward the front of the bus.

“She’s fucking insane,” Miguel muttered behind us.

I had already destroyed whatever patience they had left.

Rome kicked the bus door open and shoved me out in one brutal motion.

Fuck, I can’t even shift.

But it was too late.

Right in front of my face, he slammed the bus door shut.

I slowly pushed myself off the road and brushed the dirt from my clothes, scanning my surroundings with panic building inside me.

I didn’t know if the world had always been this terrifying.

Maybe I had just never noticed it before. Back when my biggest concern was surviving another day as a neglected housewife.

“Well, Fallon, you really do have terrible luck with men,” I muttered under my breath while making my way carefully toward the gate.

Tall walls stretched around it, making the entrance feel even scarier.

Then I spotted the lock.

“There’s no key!” I shouted.

Rome leaned against the dashboard, his hands planted on it as he watched me.

It was crazy how the man who had offered me his hand to help me onto the bus, sounding so cheerful and talkative, was now enjoying my misery so much.

Then he straightened and pointed toward the left side of the gate.

A small security room was built beside the wall nearby.

The longer I remained outside the bus, the more the fear crept under my skin.

The dark clouds overhead only made it worse.

Every rumble of thunder made me flinch.

Bracing myself, I moved carefully toward the door.

Not once did I spot a zombie heading in my direction, and I silently prayed it stayed that way until I reached the security room.

Then something shifted inside.

There was a faint movement inside, as if someone was in there, probably slamming something against the wall.

The sound was weak but rhythmic.

“Hello?” I called out, hoping a warrior had taken shelter in there.

Silence answered me.

At that point, I seriously started questioning every decision that had led me here.

I lifted my hand to knock, then stopped midway.

Right.

Because knocking politely on a door possibly hiding a zombie was obviously a brilliant idea.

My gaze darted back toward the bus.

The alphas had spread out along the windows, each one watching me from inside like spectators enjoying a show.

I rolled my eyes at them before scanning the area for anything I could use as a weapon.

A few steps away from the security room, something caught my attention.

A jagged piece of broken glass lay on the ground.

It was small.

Barely enough to defend myself with, but in a world like this, I could not afford to be picky.

I glanced back at the bus and caught Rome smirking faintly, one eyebrow raised as if he could already tell I was expecting a monster inside.

I let out a low grunt.

I faced the room again, tightening my grip on the broken glass.

The thing barely counted as a weapon.

Maybe I was panicking for no reason.

Maybe there actually was a warrior inside.

As I approached the door, I wrapped my hand around the handle and shut my eyes.

“You seriously think some random piece of glass is going to help?” Miguel sneered, disbelief dripping from his voice.

I shoved the door open.

The stench hits me first. And then the gruesome view. The blood splashed everywhere.

I suddenly can’t hold back the tears welling up in my eyes. He must have put up a good fight when he was alive.

The warrior guarding the security area had already turned into a zombie.

The skin around his mouth had peeled back, making his teeth look grotesque.

His jaw hung open like he was ready to bite at any moment.

Even the way he stood felt wrong.

Its nails were blackened with dirt and dried blood, as if it had spent hours clawing at the walls from inside the room.

The moment it saw me, it sprang to its feet and charged at me.

Nathan:Well, the moment Liam saw them, he started gritting his teeth. But we didn't have time for that because Ali had already turned the car back toward my mother. As we approached her, the car began slowing down again."Why are we slowing down?" Liam blurted out.I turned toward him, staring at him in shock."All right, your mother is there," he added.I mean, that was pretty insensitive of him.But I guess he was scared too, like the rest of us."Okay. We have to help my mother get on top of the bus now," I told Liam because the others clearly weren't going to help.I guess Liam was confused because he glanced at the others."It's a long story. They're acting like a bunch of bullies," I explained, gently tapping him with the back of my hand before shifting toward the window."Mother, you have to jump on top of the bus," I called out.At this point, we'd made enough rounds around the area and enough noise for the zombies to start coming after us.The only good thing was that whenev

Nathan:Fallon had completely refused to help. I should have expected it.As soon as she found out that my mother was one of the survivors, Fallon showed her true colors.I'd always felt that she didn't like my mother. Whenever she took care of her, it always seemed forced. And today, I finally knew why.She wanted my mother to stay trapped there.Even her little puppets refused to help, all because of Fallon.I stayed quiet. I knew I could help my mother myself.I'd already heard Fallon explaining the plan she'd come up with. Not that it was much of a plan. It was literally the only logical thing to do.Even if she hadn't suggested it, I would've thought of it myself. As soon as we drove closer to the shop, I called out to the survivors, telling them to jump onto the car.Liam was the first to notice us. His eyes widened when he saw me."Come on! Help my mom get onto the roof of the car first," I urged anxiously, glancing around at the zombies as they drew closer. But instead, Liam s

Fallon:Nathan had really tested my limits.I wasn't the type to show off, but he had left me with no choice. The moment I tossed him over my shoulder and he hit the floor, the color drained from his face. No, it wasn't just that.He looked like he was about to cry.But stubborn and egotistical as he was, he tried to save face by shifting everyone's attention to the survivors. Then he pointed toward the rooftop of the shop. The face that briefly appeared over the edge, checking whether the military bus had come to rescue them, made me freeze. My jaw tightened. My fists clenched.I recognized those motherfuckers. The face that appeared over the edge of the rooftop made my breath catch.No.It couldn't be.The man cautiously raised his head, scanning the street before his eyes landed on the bus.I remembered him. That motherfucker was Liam, Priya's abusive husband. Then the woman slowly lifted her head beside him, almost as if she were trying to keep him from exposing himself too much.

Nathan:"What do you mean by that?" I demanded, glaring at her.She met my glare without flinching."I mean that's exactly what I'd expect from someone like you."Then she clicked her tongue and let out a quiet scoff."You're selfish."The moment she said that, I clenched my jaw so hard I felt it pop."You don't have to worry about it," Fallon continued calmly. "Just sit in the back and let us handle this."Her cold confidence drew a humorless laugh from me."Really?"I took a step toward her."And who exactly told you that you could talk back to me like that?"I took another step."You know I'm an Alpha."Rome and Ace moved at the same time. Both of them stepped in behind Fallon, shoulders squared, ready to intervene.Fallon glanced back.Without a hint of concern, she stretched both arms behind her, placing one hand against Rome's chest and the other against Ace's."It's fine," she told them quietly.Neither of them moved. They exchanged a glance before reluctantly stopping where th

Nathan:I kept gulping as Fallon pointed toward a small shop.It sat on the corner, squeezed between two badly damaged buildings. Its windows were tinted a deep red, making it impossible to see inside."The man who contacted Alpha King Eugene over the radio said they'd marked the building," Fallon reminded us. "Red windows. That's how we'd know we'd found the right place."She sounded like a perfectly trained soldier. Then why the fuck was I so scared?Maybe it was because she'd been outside before. She had seen things like this, dealt with them, gotten used to them.I hadn't.Ali slowed the bus just enough to circle the block without stopping. My palms started to sweat.More than once, I wanted to tell them to forget it.
