DEVA LOREN/ LANA ALVAREZ

"Indeed, what brings you to my chambers today?" I answered frankly. "We haven't seen each other since..."

Since he kissed me, held my umbrella to shield me from the sun, and walked with me.

"I am sorry." He sighed.

"You do not have to apologize for wanting your space." I sat on my bed offering a warm smile. I gestured to the plush couch in my room. "Have a seat, please."

He sat down, speaking immediately. "I'm sure you've received the scroll."

"I have. Quite some roles I have received."

"I didn't bring you here just to bear me children. Especially after I assured you that I wouldn't put you in a difficult place, although I have been failing to keep my word." He was quicker than usual to reply.

"Then-"

"The council has put some pressure on me, as Sophie and I have been unable to produce children."

He had been trying with her?

Nausea evoked in my chest and bile rose to my chest.

Did I really think in the back of my head that nothing was going on between them?

DEVA LOREN/ LANA ALVAREZ.It took a while as Aaron drilled Anna again. We were departing to find Ember. The morning sun was soft, not too bright yet, and the courtyard smelled faintly of pinewood and dew. Carriages stood ready by the main steps, one for Aaron and me, and another for the guards and two of the servants we trusted. A few horses were saddled for the rest of the guards traveling with us. We were keeping it small on purpose. Quiet. I had insisted. Aaron saw reason with me.Sophie ought to accompany Aaron instead, but she was confined to the areas of her chambers.Anna stood a little off to the side, arms folded over her chest, trying to look calm. But I could tell. She was biting the inside of her cheek, like she always did when something was bothering her. She looked at me now like she wasn’t sure she wanted to hug me or scold me.“I still think you should let someone else go in your place,” she said. Her voice was steady, but her eyes were wet. "You've never traveled so f

DEVA LOREN/ LANA ALVAREZ"Mel," I grinned. I could feel her power pulsing through me."I told you I would return to you," she said. And she did."Thank you." The tears continued to fall as I wiped them. "For coming back to me. I had thought I would never have you back with me. It has been..."She completed my sentence when I failed to find the words. "Lonely? Alone? Well, not anymore. You have me, always, Lana.""What are we going to do now? The wild marrow."I’d only ever heard of wild marrow in stories, said to grow where it least expects and hope is thin. It's rare. Nearly a myth. Its stalks are dark, almost black, with leaves shaped like teardrops, edged in silver. When the light hits just right, the veins shimmer gold, like they’re pulsing with something old. Ancient. The petals, when they choose to bloom, are a soft violet, nearly translucent and pleasant to the sight. They say it doesn’t grow twice in the same place. And if you ever find it, it’s because it chose to be found. T

DEVA LOREN/ LANA ALVAREZ.I knew I was dreaming because everything was too warm. I could feel the ground under me pulsing like a heartbeat, or perhaps my feet were unsteady, unsure whether to go back or not, and the trees above shimmered with silver frost like a world of fantasy, the kind only read in books and rarely ever witnessed, though there was no cold. With all these things, I felt a connection to the forest that was familiar. It felt surreal. Too familiar. My steps fell over an old path I hadn’t walked in years. Then I saw her.A younger version of me knelt by a river, my wolf at my side. And even though I could not see my reflection, I could tell I was in my body again. The girl stood up, faced me, and grinned with mischief, then started running with her wolf."Wait!" I screamed, taking to my heels. "Don't go! Please." I was tired, breathing heavily, but I kept going. I knew she was trying to tell me something. Show me something. She'd turn back to see if I was still there be

DEVA LOREN/ LANA ALVAREZ I was strolling through the halls when I met Aaron on the way. Landon, who was behind me, was usually quiet and only grunted when I asked him to excuse me.Aaron wanted to work with me, alone. I was stunned at first but immediately agreed. I was slacking, and moving onto my next phase was important; to make Aaron experience loss, the same type I endured."I heard we might experience famine," I said, making my tone hushed."Word does travel fast..." He trailed off."Rest assured, the councilmen told me. I know the word is not supposed to go past the grand walls of the royal home.""Thank you," he gave me a warm smile. "Rest assured I am planning to control the situation. You may inform your parents so they can control it.""Last time a famine happened...""You remember?" He did not let me finish."Yes, I do." It was around the time my pack got attacked and taken away by the Shrovas. When I think about it, I can see the dust, remember the fog, the clashing of s

AARON SHROVAA knock disturbed me as I looked through paperwork."Alpha Aaron, Luna Sana seeks to speak with you," my guard said."Let her in," I told him.Soon after, she stepped in, regally dressed, looking at me disdainfully."I cannot believe after all Sophie had done for you, Aaron-""Your daughter tried to poison me!" I snapped, immediately annoyed."She loves you! You think I wanted her to marry you?! There were many suitors lined up to marry her, but she chose you.""She said she doesn't love me," I told her, my voice lower."Oh, even the blind can tell that she'll do whatever it takes to make you happy, even at the cost of her own happiness," Sana spat. "Her happiness means little to hers, but oh yours...""True love is not abusive, emotionally or physically. She manipulated me, it is not love. She desires me, she does not love me," I blatantly replied. I leaned down to the table, placing my hands and looking up at her. "You think she ought to be alive? You must be aware of t

AARON SHROVA"Can we talk?" I asked Deva after our guests departed. She had done more than she needed to do, withstood so much humiliation because of me, and I knew we both had a connection, the loss of someone we loved. She lost hers and was forced to marry me by the cause of duty towards her pack. Are we the same when I cowardly left mine? I continued to live like everything was in the right order while she rotted away unknown to me."I-""Do not say no, I beg of you," I pleaded. I knew that expression; she was hesitant. I, on the other hand, was desperate to fix whatever disagreement we had, to mend whatever had been broken if there was anything in the first place."Alright. Let us talk," she agreed. I smiled. "Thank you. But not out here.""We can go to the banquet hall; there's a tea party left unfinished. The tea and snacks will be cold but can be eaten regardless. Do you mind?" she offered."Not at all. I appreciate your kindness," I told her. "I would love to be there.""Hm,"
