Serena’s POV

The silence in the room was suffocating, punctuated only by Penelope’s jagged breathing. I sat on the floor beside her holding her hand. Her skin was ice cold, a stark reminder of the terror my father had instilled in her. Looking at her I did not see a stranger. I saw myself three years ago trapped, silenced and waiting for a rescue that never came.

"I can not go through with it Serena," Penelope sobbed. Her head rested on her knees. "He says I am lucky. He says a marriage to that monster will secure the pack's future. He does not care if I die."

"You are not going to marry him," I said. My voice was firm. I felt a surge of protectiveness that was entirely new to me. "I was a pawn for too long letting men like Grey and Caden decide my worth. I will not let you become the next sacrifice on their altar of greed."

Penelope looked at me. Her eyes were red rimmed. "Why are you helping me? I am just a mistake remember?"

I brushed a stray lock of hair from her face. "You are my sister. And right now you are the only person in this world I truly care about saving. We are going to leave this place but we need to be smart. If we run now he will hunt us down before we reach the treeline."

"What can we do?" she whispered, clinging to my sleeve. "He has guards everywhere. He watches the gates day and night."

"We wait for an opening," I told her. My mind already cataloged the weaknesses in the estate’s security. "I have the evidence against Caden. If I play my cards right I can use that to draw the attention of the Council. When the chaos starts we slip away."

"I just want to be free," she whispered. "I want to walk in the woods without feeling like a prisoner."

"You will be," I promised. "I swear it on my life."

The next morning the atmosphere in the great hall shifted. The servants were running about frantic and breathless hanging banners and scrubbing floors until the stone shone. My father emerged from his study looking more agitated than I had ever seen him. He was pacing back and forth checking his reflection in the mirror. His face was a mixture of arrogance and raw unfiltered anxiety.

He caught sight of me and Penelope huddled near the stairs and stopped. "You two," he barked, pointing a finger at us. "Clean yourselves up. Put on your finest silks. We have an honored guest arriving by sunset."

"Who is coming?" I asked, keeping my tone neutral.

My father turned to me. A smug desperate look crossed his face. "The Lycan King himself. He is coming to inspect the pack and verify our tribute numbers. This visit is the only thing that will keep the creditors at bay. If he is satisfied I will have the gold I need to secure the debt and I will have the prestige to solidify your sister’s arrangement."

My blood turned to ice. The Lycan King was the highest authority in the land. If he were here he would be looking for flaws. He would be looking for any sign of rebellion or mismanagement. If he found out what my father was truly doing the debts the lies the selling of his own blood my father would be executed on the spot.

"He is coming tomorrow?" I asked. My voice was barely audible.

"Tomorrow at noon," my father confirmed. His eyes glinted with a dangerous unstable hunger. "And you will be on your best behavior. If either of you says one word out of line I will ensure you spend the rest of your lives in the dungeons. Do you understand?"

He stormed away barking orders at the guards. I looked at Penelope whose face had gone deathly pale. We were no longer just running from a father. We were standing in the path of the most powerful hunter in the world.

"Serena," Penelope whispered, clutching my hand so hard it hurt. "If he inspects the pack he will find out about the ledger. He will find out everything."

"Exactly," I said. A dark calculated thought took root in my mind. "If the King is coming to inspect the pack then he will see exactly what kind of monster runs it. We do not need to run Penelope. We just need to make sure the King sees the truth."

Penelope’s eyes widened. "You want to expose Father in front of the Lycan King? That is suicide Serena. He will kill us before we even open our mouths."

"Not if we are careful," I replied. I squeezed her hand reassuringly. "The King is not a fool. He will sense the rot if we point him in the right direction. A whispered word here, a misplaced document there. We do not have to do it all at once. Just enough to plant the seeds of doubt."

Gale joined us in a quiet corner of the hall. His face was tense. "My lady the King’s arrival changes everything. Security will be tripled. But it also creates confusion. Servants will be distracted. Guards will be focused on the main gates. This might be our best chance to slip away if things go wrong."

"I agree," I said. "We prepare for both outcomes. If the King seems fair we reveal what we can. If not we escape during the inspection chaos. Either way Penelope does not end up married to that monster."

Penelope took a deep breath. "I have never spoken against Father before. The thought terrifies me. But after years of hiding in the shadows I am ready to fight. Tell me what I need to do."

"Stay close to me," I told her. "Act obedient in front of Father but keep your eyes open. Note any unusual activity and any visitors who seem out of place. The King will bring his own entourage. If I can get close enough to speak to him even for a moment I can plant the idea that something is wrong here."

"What about the ledger?" Gale asked. "It is too dangerous to carry openly."

"I will hide portions of it," I said. "Key pages that show the financial trails. If the King demands proof I can produce it. Caden’s crimes and Father’s debts are connected. Exposing one will lead to the other."

My father’s voice boomed across the hall again. "Serena! Penelope! Stop whispering and make yourselves useful. The banners on the east wall are crooked. Fix them now!"

We moved quickly to obey. As we adjusted the heavy fabric Penelope leaned close. "Do you really think we can win against them? Two Alphas. The entire system."

"We already started winning the moment I left Caden," I whispered back. "And finding you only made me stronger. We are not alone anymore sister. We have each other and the truth."

She nodded. A flicker of determination crossed her face. "Then let the King come. Let him see what kind of man my father really is."

The rest of the day passed in a blur of preparations. Servants polished silver until it gleamed. Guards drilled in the courtyard. My father barked orders nonstop. Through it all I kept Penelope close, exchanging quiet words of encouragement whenever we could.

As evening fell I stood at the window of my old chamber looking out at the approaching night. The Lycan King Alaric would arrive soon. His presence could be our salvation or our doom. But for the first time in years I felt hope mixed with resolve.

"Tomorrow everything changes," I murmured to myself. "And I will make sure it changes in our favor."

Penelope came to stand beside me. "I am scared but I am also excited. For the first time I feel like I have a future worth fighting for."

"We both do," I said. I put my arm around her shoulders. "Rest now. We need our strength."

As she lay down I stayed awake planning every detail. The ledger pages, hidden carefully. Escape routes memorized. Words prepared for the King. No matter what happened tomorrow, Hollow Fall would never be the same. And neither would we.

The moon hung high casting silver light across the room. I touched the hidden ledger pages in my dress pocket. Power surged through me. This was my moment. Our moment. And I would not waste it.

Serena’s POVAfter the confrontation in the great hall I could not sit still. Caden’s words still burned in my ears. His public attempt to break me had only strengthened my resolve. I would not let Penelope suffer the same fate I had endured. I would find leverage to save her myself even if it meant risking everything inside my father’s own home.I paced the narrow corridor outside my chamber. Penelope slept uneasily in the room behind me. Her future hung by a thread and I refused to let my father cut it.Gale appeared from the shadows. His footsteps were silent as always. "My lady the King has retired for the night but tensions remain high. Caden and Liliana have been given guest quarters. They are watching everything."I nodded. "Good. Let them watch. I am done hiding Gale. I need to find something concrete. Something that forces my father’s hand before he can sell Penelope off."Gale glanced down the hall. "I have heard rumors from the servants. Serena’s POVThe great hall buzzed with tension as the morning session of the inspection continued. I stood near the back with Penelope trying to remain invisible while Alaric questioned my father about tribute records. Every word Grey spoke felt like a lie wrapped in silk. I kept my head high but my heart raced. The pages from the ledger burned in my pocket like a promise of justice.Suddenly the main doors burst open. Heavy footsteps echoed across the stone floor. I turned and my blood ran cold.Caden strode in like he owned the hall. Liliana walked beside him one hand resting dramatically on her rounded belly. She looked every bit the fragile expecting mate glowing with false innocence. Caden’s eyes scanned the room until they locked onto me. A cruel smirk spread across his face."What is the meaning of this?" my father demanded though his voice wavered. "This is a private royal inspection."Caden ignored him completely. He bowed slightly toward Alaric. "My King I apologize for th

Alaric’s POVI stood at the window of the guest chambers overlooking the Hollow Fall estate. The moon cast long shadows across the grounds. My wolf stirred restlessly beneath my skin. This inspection was supposed to be routine. Verify tributes. Assess loyalty. Yet from the moment I arrived nothing felt routine. Especially not the bold young woman who had challenged me in the courtyard.Serena. Her name echoed in my mind. She had fire, real fire. Not the calculated obedience most Alphas surrounded themselves with. Her defiance stirred something I had not felt in years. But I could not afford distractions. Not with the shadows of the past still hunting me.A soft knock sounded at the door. "Enter," I commanded. My advisor Marcus stepped inside. He bowed low. His silver hair gleamed under the lantern light. "My King, the preliminary reports from the inspection are ready. Alpha Grey’s accounts show inconsistencies. Small enough to dismiss but troubling when viewed together."I turned fro

Serena’s POVThe silence in the courtyard was heavy, thick enough to choke on. My father looked as if he might faint. His eyes darted frantically between the Lycan King and me. His face was a mask of pure terror. Alaric remained perfectly still. His eyes scanned me with a cold detached indifference that made my skin prickle."Grey," Alaric said. His voice was deep and smooth like a stone rolling over gravel. He did not take his eyes off me. "I was not aware that your servants were permitted to stand in the driveway during a royal inspection. Have your help cleared away at once."I felt a surge of hot bitter anger. I stepped forward. My boots crunched loudly on the gravel. "I am not a servant," I said. My voice was sharp and clear, cutting through the tense air of the courtyard.Alaric finally shifted his gaze slightly. One dark eyebrow arched in surprise. "No?" he asked. His tone was mocking. "Then you must be the most daring housemaid in the history of Hollow Fall to interrupt a King

My father was everywhere at once, his face red with stress barking orders that changed every five seconds. He treated the pack like a broken machine he was trying to hide before the master came to inspect it."You stay here," my father spat at me and Penelope in the nursery. He had locked us in the east wing hours ago. "You are damaged goods Serena. A disgraced ex mate. If the King sees you he will know I have lost control of my own blood. You stay out of sight or I will make sure you never see the light of day again."He slammed the door and the lock clicked into place with a final heavy sound. Penelope began to cry. Her shoulders shook in the dim light. I ignored her tears. My mind raced. I walked to the window watching the long driveway that stretched toward the horizon. If the King was co
