Chapter 5

Author: Nameless
Mom froze in the doorway, still holding the door open.

"What's the matter, honey?"

Sensing that something was wrong, Dad hurried forward and looked past Mom's shoulder into the room. At the next second, his eyes widened in horror. His whole body swayed, and he barely managed to catch himself against the doorframe.

Jessica and Ian came over, too. Jessica's scream was so shrill that it nearly pierced my eardrums.

They all saw me, the son and brother who gave them nothing but headaches, caused

Watching them break down, I sighed."Please stop crying. I know it's too little and hardly worth giving, but I tried my best. That's all the money I managed to save up. Just accept the token of my love."Mom pressed the envelope against her chest before kneeling in front of my portrait in a daze "Jon… I was wrong… I was so wrong…"…It rained heavily the day I was set to be buried. I sat on top of my own urn as Dad carried me, step by step, toward the grave that had already been dug.A distant relative stood beneath a tree to take shelter from the rain. He muttered under his breath. "Ugh, it's raining so hard… Then again, maybe it's for the best that he's gone. Sam and his family can finally be free. They don't have to wait on a mentally ill person, saving both their money and their time."His voice sounded especially jarring amid the solemn atmosphere.I froze for a moment. He was right, actually. That was what I had thought, too. But before I could nod in agreement…"That's n

I followed everyone out of the house. The neighbors had come out and gathered around to watch."Oh, dear. Is he really dead? I always said it wasn't right for the Stewarts to keep their son locked up like that…""I heard his mother was the one who handed him the knife yesterday. My God, how could a mother be so cruel?""He had depression, right? Sure, I pity him, but he has been such a huge burden on his family, too… Now, well, at least they're all free.""Hush! Keep your voice down! They haven't left yet. But honestly, you're right. The Stewarts can breathe easier now."The gossiping neighbors sounded like buzzing flies. Every single word was like a knife stabbing into my parents' hearts.Mom buried her head deep between her knees, curling into a ball as muffled sobs escaped her."Jon… My son…"But I would never be able to answer her again.…They set up the funeral service right in the living room, too. The wedding decorations had been taken down, replaced with a memorial p

Wasn't it better that I was dead now?Hovering in the air, I looked around at the blood-stained room and the three grieving figures in front of her. I lowered my head and said, "I'm sorry, Mom, Dad, and Jess. Even when I die, I still cause so much trouble for you guys. I'm sorry. I'm really sorry."The ambulance and police arrived almost at the same time.Several emergency responders rushed into the room, but one look was all it took for them to shake their heads."His pupils are dilated, and lividity has already set in. He's been dead for at least 12 hours. He can't be resuscitated.""That's impossible! I even brought him some chocolate last night!"Mom, her hair disheveled and her face smeared with blood, lunged forward like a madwoman and grabbed the emergency responder by the collar."That's nonsense! Save him! My son isn't dead! He's just sleeping! I have money! I have 50,000 dollars, and you can have all of it! So please, save him!"A police officer stepped forward and pu

Jessica's scream was so shrill that it nearly pierced my eardrums. They all saw me, the son and brother who gave them nothing but headaches, caused them nothing but embarrassment, and made them throw all their money down a bottomless pit.And right now, my body was lying in a pool of congealed blood, my hand still gripping the fruit knife."Jon…"Mom let out a wail. Her legs gave way, and she scrambled into the room. Her knees sank right into the pool of blood as her trembling hands reached for me."Jon! Jon, what's wrong? Don't scare me! Open your eyes and look at me…"She touched my throat. There was a gaping wound there, deep enough

"As long as you behave yourself and stop trying to kill yourself, I'll give you whatever you want," Mom declared.I nodded frantically, wanting to throw my arms around her and tell her, "I'll behave myself, Mom. I won't do it anymore. I'll never make you angry again! Mom, please don't be sad!"But my hands went right through her.Mom kept standing outside the door, waiting for a response, but none came. She looked disappointed."What's with this boy? He sure knows how to hold a grudge."Shaking her head, she pulled a small box of chocolates from her pocket and placed it on the floor outside my door. The family had bought the most expensive brand they could afford to give them out as wedding favors, and she'd saved some.I used to love chocolates the most."If you're hungry, have some chocolate to tide you over. Don't actually starve yourself. I'll make you some pancakes in the morning."With that, Mom went back to the master bedroom.I crouched and stared at the chocolate. How

Even though I no longer had a heartbeat, it still hurt and made me want to curl up. So this was what my family thought of me—even when I was dead, I was still just throwing a tantrum for no reason. The dining table was filled with leftovers from the wedding reception. I saw pork ribs, chicken wings, shrimp, and even half of the two-tier wedding cake.It all smelled so good. For the past three years, I'd been on a strict diet to prevent adverse reactions to my medication. All I could eat was soups and bland food, with barely any salt or fat.I'd almost forgotten what meat tasted like. Hovering over the dining table, I greedily breathed in the aroma of the pork ribs."I'll fix a plate of food for Jon. He hasn't eaten all day." Ian couldn't bring himself to be so heartless. He picked up a clean plate, put some pork ribs on it, and cut a slice of cake as well."Ian!"Mom abruptly marched over and snatched the plate from his hands. With a loud clatter, everything—the plate and the f
