Chapter 1

My mother had just helped me into bed when Apollo's mother showed up. I wasn't surprised. Lady Leto had always had perfect timing—bad timing, depending on how you looked at it.

She stood in my doorway with that same expression she had worn eight years ago. Guilt and urgency mixed together, like she was about to ask for something she had no right to ask for, but she was going to ask anyway because she had already decided that her son's divine future mattered more than my life.

"Aria," she said, stepping inside. Her voice was soft, almost gentle. That was how she always started. "I need a favor. A very difficult favor."

I watched her face turn red. She kept opening her mouth and closing it again, like a fish gasping for air. I didn't let her finish. I already knew why she was here.

It was the same as eight years ago.

Eight years ago, when I first received the oracle's prophecy, Lady Leto rushed into my chamber before the tears on my face had even dried. I was still trying to understand what a mortal curse meant and struggling to process the fact that my life was fading at eighteen when she knelt right there on the cold marble floor.

"Aria, please. Don't drag Apollo down. The High King just chose him for an eight-year campaign in the frozen wastes beyond the North Wind. If he finds out you are cursed to die, he will never leave."

I remembered how her voice had cracked, how her eyes had glistened with tears. She looked so sincere. So desperate.

"You and Apollo grew up together. You've been together all these years. I'm begging you—break his heart. He is destined to inherit the throne of the Sun, and you are fading. How can you hold him back?"

I didn't answer. I couldn't. My throat was too tight.

She took my silence as permission to continue. "I've already worked it out. I'll find a young mortal warrior—someone from a neighboring polis, someone Apollo doesn't know. You just have to pretend to kiss him down by the bank of the Anphissos river. Let Apollo see. Pretend you betrayed him. Force him to leave."

She said it like it was simple. Like breaking Apollo's heart was no harder than casting aside a cloak.

And because I was eighteen and terrified and convinced that I was already as good as dead, I said yes.

So instead of seeking a cure from the gods, instead of fighting for my life, I spent my first weeks of dying pretending to betray the only person I had ever loved. I forced him to hate me. I drove him to the edge of the world.

Now, eight years later, Lady Leto stood in my chamber again.

"Aria, don't blame me. I have no choice." She twisted her hands together. "Apollo's new bride, Chloe—she is a high nymph of royal lineage. When Apollo ascends, she will rule alongside him. They are perfect together in every way. I'm begging you—just let them be happy."

She paused, and her voice dropped lower. "You know how much Apollo used to love you. He carried you in his heart since you were both children. If he ever finds out the truth about what happened back then... I'm scared. I'm so scared of what he might do."

"So please. Just stay away from him. You're dying anyway. It's not like you should be leaving the estate, right?"

The moment that word left her mouth—dying—my mother slammed the clay pitcher she was holding onto the floor. Terracotta shattered. Water splashed across the stone tiles.

My mother's face was red. Her whole body trembled with fury. I knew she was about to explode, to say things that couldn't be taken back, to burn bridges that I wasn't ready to burn.

So I grabbed her arm and shook it gently. A small, silent plea. Please, Mom. Not yet.

She looked down at me, and her anger crumpled into something softer, sadder. She bit her lip and stepped back.

I turned to Leto. My voice came out calm—calmer than I felt.

"Lady Leto, I can promise you one thing. I won't tell Apollo what happened eight years ago. But I can't promise not to see him. I can't stay away."

Leto's face tightened. She opened her mouth to argue, but I kept going.

"You don't understand. I've spent eight years fighting this curse. Eight years of purification rituals, failed enchantments, and pain that made me want to tear my own skin off. The only thing that kept me breathing was the thought of seeing him again."

My voice cracked a little. I steadied it.

"So no. I won't hide in this house until I pass. I'm going to see him. Every chance I get. And if that makes things difficult for you and your perfect Chloe, then I'm sorry. But I'm not sorry enough to stop."

Leto stared at me. Her mouth opened and closed a few times. Then she nodded stiffly, turned, and walked out of the chamber.

My mother didn't say anything. She just sat on the edge of my bed and took my hand.

I leaned my head against her shoulder and closed my eyes.

The truth was, I hadn't been entirely honest with Lady Leto. Yes, I wanted to see Apollo. But not because I hoped to win him back. I knew that was impossible. He had a divine bride now. A sacred union ahead. A whole life that didn't include me.

I just wanted to be near him a few more times before my time ran out. That was all.

Was that really too much to ask?

  • I Broke His Heart to Save Him   Chapter 11

Three months later, Aria's mother stood by the riverbank. The leaves had turned gold and red. They fell around her like rain, drifting down from the branches and settling on her shoulders.Apollo stood a few feet away, his hands in his tunic, looking up at the sky."You should go back to the Sun Court," she said.He shook his head. "This is my home.""There's nothing for you here.""She's here." He looked at the river, at the grass beneath it, at the path that led to the Moon Spring. "Her memory is here. That's enough."Apollo reached into his tunic and pulled out the silver coin."She gave this to me," he said. "But I want you to keep it. Until I see her again."Her eyes filled with tears. She nodded.Apollo turned and walked toward the forest. The path was overgrown now. No one came here anymore. But he knew the way. He had walked it a thousand times when he was young. He reached the Moon Spring. The water was clear and cold. The same rocks sat by the edge, worn smooth by years of us

  • I Broke His Heart to Save Him   Chapter 10

(Aria's POV)Three days passed.Apollo didn't leave my side. He slept in the chair by my bed, his head tilted back, his mouth slightly open. He ate the plain bread and watered wine the temple attendants brought, without complaining. He held my hand when the pain got bad. He read to me from a scroll he found in the temple library, some old epic poem with torn edges and faded ink.My mother came and went. She brought me clean tunics, my favorite honeyed tea, a small carving of my father that I kept on the bedside table. She and Apollo didn't talk much, but I saw her watching him. I saw the anger in her eyes soften, just a little. On the third day, Chloe came. She wasn't alone. The North Wind King walked beside her, his face hard as stone. They stood in the doorway of my room. The King's eyes swept over me, the bandage, the gray skin, and his expression didn't change."Apollo," he said. "Come home."Apollo didn't stand up. He didn't let go of my hand."No," he said. The King's jaw tighten

  • I Broke His Heart to Save Him   Chapter 9

(Apollo's POV)Aria's room was at the end of the third-floor hallway. The door was closed.Aria's mother stopped outside. She turned to face him."She doesn't have much time," she said. "The healer said maybe a month, but—" She shook her head. "She's getting weaker every day.""I know," Apollo said. "I know.""And she doesn't know you're coming. She didn't want you to find her. She wanted you to move on. To live your life."Apollo swallowed. "I know."She opened the door. The room was small. A bed, a cabinet, a chair. The curtains were drawn, but a small oil lamp on the bedside table gave off a soft golden glow.Aria was lying in the bed.She was so thin. Thinner than he had ever seen her. Her cheekbones stood out sharply. Her collarbones were visible above the edge of the blanket. Her skin was pale, not just pale but grayish, like ash.A cloth soaked in herbs lay across her forehead. A small clay bowl of dark liquid sat on the cabinet beside her bed. There was a bandage on her forehea

  • I Broke His Heart to Save Him   Chapter 8

(Aria's POV)Apollo didn't know the truth. Not really. He knew I was cursed, but he didn't know how badly. He knew something was wrong with me, but he didn't know I was already dying. The night I got home from the pavilion, I coughed up blood. Dark and thick, staining my tunic and pooling on the white linen. My mother screamed. She sent for the temple healer at the second hour of the night. The healer came. She was old, with gray hair and kind eyes. She had treated me for eight years. She had watched me go from healthy to dying. She had held my hand through every ritual. She had wept with my mother when nothing worked. That night, she took one look at me and her face went hard."The curse has reached her core," she told my mother. "At this rate, she has perhaps a month."My mother collapsed. She fell to her knees on the stone floor and grabbed the healer's hands."You said three months. You said she had three months. How can it be—""The fall. The impact." The healer shook her head.

  • I Broke His Heart to Save Him   Chapter 7

(Apollo's POV)The next morning, Apollo left the temple chamber before Chloe woke. He left a note, a lie, saying he had to handle something for the ceremony. But he didn't handle anything for the ceremony. He took his chariot and drove. He drove through the polis, past the Moon Spring, past the house where he had grown up. He drove in circles for an hour. Then he stopped outside Aria's estate. He sat there for a long time with the reins loose in his hands, staring at the front gate.Eight years ago, he had stood at that gate for three days and three nights. He had smashed his fist into the temple pillar until his knuckles bled. He had shouted until his voice gave out. "Aria! Come out! Tell me why! Who is he? Who is the man you kissed by the river bank?"She never came out. She just stood behind the second-floor window, watching him through the glass, crying. He didn't understand then. He thought her tears were guilt. He thought she was crying because she had been caught. Now he wasn't

  • I Broke His Heart to Save Him   Chapter 6

(Apollo's POV)Apollo couldn't stop thinking about the way Aria had looked at him at the end. That look in her eyes, love and goodbye and pain all tangled together, followed him everywhere. He saw it when he closed his eyes. He felt it in his chest like a stone.Even after the healer at the temple said Chloe and the child were fine, just a scare with no real harm, Apollo felt nothing. No relief. No joy. Just that heavy, aching stone.Once Chloe fell asleep, he walked out of the room and stood in the hallway. He stared at the white marble wall and tried to breathe. He reached through the frayed soul-thread. Nothing. Just silence. She had blocked him again. Or maybe she just didn't want to speak to him. He couldn't blame her.He thought about how he had ended up with Chloe in the first place. It felt like a nightmare he couldn't wake from.He had met her during his service in the frozen wastes beyond the North Wind. A blizzard trapped a royal caravan, and Chloe was among them, the daught
