Chapter 2

Autor: Summer
No sooner had Lady Leto left than I heard Apollo's voice coming from outside the estate.

I sat up a little straighter in bed, my heart suddenly pounding. I hadn't expected him to come here. Not after everything.

Eight years ago, he had hated me so much that he couldn't even stand to breathe the same air.

He had stood outside my door for three days straight, demanding answers. His voice still rang in my head, harsh and jagged, trembling with anger and heartache.

"Aria! Come out! Tell me why! Who is he? Who is the man you kissed by the river bank?"

I had watched him from my chamber window. He didn't sleep. He didn't eat. He just stood there, waiting.

On the third day, I finally went to the door. I didn't open it. I stood behind the wood and spoke through the crack.

"I have no love left for you, Apollo. We are finished."

I heard him suck in a breath. Then silence.

I thought he had left. But when I looked through the peephole, he was still there. His hands were balled into fists at his sides. His face was white.

Then he smashed his fist into the temple pillar at the entrance. Once. Twice. Three times. Divine power cracked the stone down the middle, and blood stained his knuckles.

He never laid a hand on me. He never threatened me. But after that day, the sight of me repulsed him.

If he saw me along the daffodil riverbanks, he turned around and walked the other way. If he passed by my home, his face would twist like he'd smelled something rotten. He stopped going to the Sacred Spring—the place where we had spent every summer evening since we were children, lying on the grass and watching the stars.

If someone mentioned my name in front of him, he shut them down cold.

"Why are we talking about Aria?" he would say, his voice flat and hard. "She makes me sick."

The day he left for the frozen north, I stood in the pouring rain to see him off one last time. I didn't go close. I stayed at the edge of the crowd, hoping he wouldn't notice me.

But he did.

He looked right at me. His eyes were empty. He reached into his tunic and pulled out the golden pendant I had given him, engraved with my name. He threw it at my feet. After that, he took the scroll of letters filled with every promise we had ever made each other and tore it to pieces, scattering them into the mud.

He gave me a grim, dark smile.

Then he turned and walked away without looking back.

So no. I hadn't expected him to come to my estate ever again.

But now, eight years later, he was standing outside.

My mother hadn't fully closed the door after Lady Leto left, and I could see him through the gap. He was holding Chloe's hand. She was beautiful, tall and golden, with the effortless confidence of a royal nymph.

"My lady," Apollo was saying to my mother. His voice was different now—deeper, colder, more controlled. "Are you still upset about what happened eight years ago? Is that why you won't let Aria help us prepare for the sacred rites?"

He paused. "Look, I don't have feelings for Aria anymore. I've moved on. We grew up together—if we cannot be united in divine marriage, we can at least be civil."

My mother didn't answer. Her face was stone.

Chloe stepped forward, smiling brightly. "Auntie, Apollo has told me everything about him and Aria. Sure, Aria betrayed him back when they were young. But we were all young once, right? He's forgiven her. It's ancient history."

She laughed—a light, tinkling sound. "Besides, I should thank her. If she hadn't betrayed Apollo, I never would have found him. He's the best thing that ever happened to me."

"So please, don't hold a grudge. It was actually my idea to have Aria help us. We've been away from the polis for eight years. We don't know the territory anymore. And Aria is our age—I trust her taste. She'll pick something beautiful for the divine ceremony, I'm sure."

Eight years ago, all I had wanted was for Apollo to forget me. To move on. To be happy.

But now, hearing him talk about the betrayal so calmly—like it was just a thing that happened, like it didn't still burn—and hearing that he had told his new bride everything about us, every detail of our life together... my chest still ached.

A dull, spreading pain. Like someone was pressing their thumb into a bruise.

My mother's face went red. Her lips trembled. I knew she was about to say something she would regret.

"Get out," she finally said. Her voice shook. "Both of you. Get out of my house."

Chloe's smile faltered. "My lady—"

"I said get out."

Apollo didn't move. He just stood there, looking past my mother, toward the hallway where my bedchamber was. Like he was trying to see through the walls.

I sat up in bed. My head spun for a moment. I took a breath, steadying myself.

"Mom," I called out. "Come help me into the chair. I want to talk to them."

There was a long silence. Then I heard my mother's footsteps, heavy and reluctant, coming toward my room.

She pushed the door open with wet eyes, but she didn't argue. She walked straight to the vanity, added a touch of color to my cheeks and lips, and neatly combed my hair. She knew what this meant to me.

"Thank you, Mom," I whispered.

She didn't answer. She just lifted me into the rolling chair and pushed me out the door.

  • I Broke His Heart to Save Him   Chapter 11

Three months later, Aria's mother stood by the riverbank. The leaves had turned gold and red. They fell around her like rain, drifting down from the branches and settling on her shoulders.Apollo stood a few feet away, his hands in his tunic, looking up at the sky."You should go back to the Sun Court," she said.He shook his head. "This is my home.""There's nothing for you here.""She's here." He looked at the river, at the grass beneath it, at the path that led to the Moon Spring. "Her memory is here. That's enough."Apollo reached into his tunic and pulled out the silver coin."She gave this to me," he said. "But I want you to keep it. Until I see her again."Her eyes filled with tears. She nodded.Apollo turned and walked toward the forest. The path was overgrown now. No one came here anymore. But he knew the way. He had walked it a thousand times when he was young. He reached the Moon Spring. The water was clear and cold. The same rocks sat by the edge, worn smooth by years of us

  • I Broke His Heart to Save Him   Chapter 10

(Aria's POV)Three days passed.Apollo didn't leave my side. He slept in the chair by my bed, his head tilted back, his mouth slightly open. He ate the plain bread and watered wine the temple attendants brought, without complaining. He held my hand when the pain got bad. He read to me from a scroll he found in the temple library, some old epic poem with torn edges and faded ink.My mother came and went. She brought me clean tunics, my favorite honeyed tea, a small carving of my father that I kept on the bedside table. She and Apollo didn't talk much, but I saw her watching him. I saw the anger in her eyes soften, just a little. On the third day, Chloe came. She wasn't alone. The North Wind King walked beside her, his face hard as stone. They stood in the doorway of my room. The King's eyes swept over me, the bandage, the gray skin, and his expression didn't change."Apollo," he said. "Come home."Apollo didn't stand up. He didn't let go of my hand."No," he said. The King's jaw tighten

  • I Broke His Heart to Save Him   Chapter 9

(Apollo's POV)Aria's room was at the end of the third-floor hallway. The door was closed.Aria's mother stopped outside. She turned to face him."She doesn't have much time," she said. "The healer said maybe a month, but—" She shook her head. "She's getting weaker every day.""I know," Apollo said. "I know.""And she doesn't know you're coming. She didn't want you to find her. She wanted you to move on. To live your life."Apollo swallowed. "I know."She opened the door. The room was small. A bed, a cabinet, a chair. The curtains were drawn, but a small oil lamp on the bedside table gave off a soft golden glow.Aria was lying in the bed.She was so thin. Thinner than he had ever seen her. Her cheekbones stood out sharply. Her collarbones were visible above the edge of the blanket. Her skin was pale, not just pale but grayish, like ash.A cloth soaked in herbs lay across her forehead. A small clay bowl of dark liquid sat on the cabinet beside her bed. There was a bandage on her forehea

  • I Broke His Heart to Save Him   Chapter 8

(Aria's POV)Apollo didn't know the truth. Not really. He knew I was cursed, but he didn't know how badly. He knew something was wrong with me, but he didn't know I was already dying. The night I got home from the pavilion, I coughed up blood. Dark and thick, staining my tunic and pooling on the white linen. My mother screamed. She sent for the temple healer at the second hour of the night. The healer came. She was old, with gray hair and kind eyes. She had treated me for eight years. She had watched me go from healthy to dying. She had held my hand through every ritual. She had wept with my mother when nothing worked. That night, she took one look at me and her face went hard."The curse has reached her core," she told my mother. "At this rate, she has perhaps a month."My mother collapsed. She fell to her knees on the stone floor and grabbed the healer's hands."You said three months. You said she had three months. How can it be—""The fall. The impact." The healer shook her head.

  • I Broke His Heart to Save Him   Chapter 7

(Apollo's POV)The next morning, Apollo left the temple chamber before Chloe woke. He left a note, a lie, saying he had to handle something for the ceremony. But he didn't handle anything for the ceremony. He took his chariot and drove. He drove through the polis, past the Moon Spring, past the house where he had grown up. He drove in circles for an hour. Then he stopped outside Aria's estate. He sat there for a long time with the reins loose in his hands, staring at the front gate.Eight years ago, he had stood at that gate for three days and three nights. He had smashed his fist into the temple pillar until his knuckles bled. He had shouted until his voice gave out. "Aria! Come out! Tell me why! Who is he? Who is the man you kissed by the river bank?"She never came out. She just stood behind the second-floor window, watching him through the glass, crying. He didn't understand then. He thought her tears were guilt. He thought she was crying because she had been caught. Now he wasn't

  • I Broke His Heart to Save Him   Chapter 6

(Apollo's POV)Apollo couldn't stop thinking about the way Aria had looked at him at the end. That look in her eyes, love and goodbye and pain all tangled together, followed him everywhere. He saw it when he closed his eyes. He felt it in his chest like a stone.Even after the healer at the temple said Chloe and the child were fine, just a scare with no real harm, Apollo felt nothing. No relief. No joy. Just that heavy, aching stone.Once Chloe fell asleep, he walked out of the room and stood in the hallway. He stared at the white marble wall and tried to breathe. He reached through the frayed soul-thread. Nothing. Just silence. She had blocked him again. Or maybe she just didn't want to speak to him. He couldn't blame her.He thought about how he had ended up with Chloe in the first place. It felt like a nightmare he couldn't wake from.He had met her during his service in the frozen wastes beyond the North Wind. A blizzard trapped a royal caravan, and Chloe was among them, the daught
