Chapter 3

Autor: Summer
When my mother wheeled me out the door, Apollo's frown deepened. His eyes swept over me again. He took in my hair, the paint on my lips, and the way I sat slumped in the chair because my strength couldn't hold me upright anymore. I saw something flicker across his face.

It was probably disgust or pity, and I couldn't tell which was worse.

"What is wrong with you?" he said. "You were spoiled as a child, and you are still spoiled now. A minor divine backlash at the altar should have cleared up by now, yet you still make your mother push you around."

I smiled at him with the calm and practiced smile I had perfected over eight years of lying to everyone I loved.

"The temple healer said the backlash damaged my nerves," I said. "My legs simply will not obey me."

Chloe jumped in before Apollo could respond. She looped her arm through his and leaned into his shoulder to stake her claim.

"Don't mind him, Aria. He has been in the frozen north for too long, so he is cold to everyone except me."

My chest tightened. It was true that Apollo was cold to everyone now. In our youth, he used to carry me on his back along the sunlit riverbanks whenever my feet grew tired. He would whisper jokes in my ear during sacred assemblies just to make me laugh. That bright youth was completely gone now.

But once, with me, he had never been cold. Once, I was the only person who could bring out his warmth.

I pushed the feeling down and looked at Chloe. "Do you really want me to come with you to help pick the venue and the rings?"

She nodded eagerly. "Of course I do. As I said, I trust your taste."

Apollo said nothing and simply stared at me with a tight jaw.

"All right," I said. "I will come."

We made small talk for a few more minutes. Chloe asked me how I had been, which was the kind of polite question no one actually wanted an honest answer to. I gave her the usual lies about being fine and busy. Apollo did not speak again. He stood there with his arms crossed and looked at everything except me.

Then they left.

That night, I was lying in bed and staring at the painted ceiling when I felt it.

A whisper of golden divine power brushed against my consciousness.

It was light and tentative, like a soft knock on a door he was not sure would open.

I held my breath. My heart started slamming against my ribs so hard that I was sure my mother could hear it in the next room.

Eight years ago, after I pretended to betray him, I severed our sacred soul-thread. I did not want him to feel my emotions through the divine bond. I did not want him to sense my guilt, my grief, or my desperate love for him, so cutting him off completely was easier.

I thought I would never feel his mind-whisper again. I thought that ancient bond was sealed forever.

But now it was open just a crack.

He did not speak at first. The divine resonance just hung there, pulsing with a dark energy I could not name. I could feel everything churning behind it, including anger, disgust, and something else that he was trying very hard to bury. It felt almost like longing.

No, that could not be right. Why would he long for me when he had Chloe now, a sacred marriage ahead, and a brand new life?

I waited.

Finally, I sent a quiet thought back into the golden thread. "Apollo?"

A long pause followed, so long that I thought he had cut the connection.

Then his voice came through. It was low and cold, sounding like the northern wind sweeping across a frozen plain.

"Tomorrow. The venue. I will pick you up in the morning."

My throat tightened because I had missed the sound of his voice so much. Even now, cold and distant and bitter as it was, it wrapped around me like a long-lost memory that I had been searching for in the dark for eight years.

"All right," I said.

There was another pause, and I could feel him hesitating as if there was more he wanted to say.

Then a woman's soft voice drifted through from his end of the thread. "Apollo, come help me..."

It was Chloe.

I swallowed hard. "Goodnight, Apollo," I whispered.

He severed the golden link instantly.

I buried my face in my pillow and let the tears fall. I cried until my head ached, my eyes grew swollen, and the linen was soaked through.

I had prepared myself for this and knew he belonged to someone else now. But feeling it, hearing her voice in his private quarters, and knowing she was in his palace and in his life still tore me apart.

  • I Broke His Heart to Save Him   Chapter 11

Three months later, Aria's mother stood by the riverbank. The leaves had turned gold and red. They fell around her like rain, drifting down from the branches and settling on her shoulders.Apollo stood a few feet away, his hands in his tunic, looking up at the sky."You should go back to the Sun Court," she said.He shook his head. "This is my home.""There's nothing for you here.""She's here." He looked at the river, at the grass beneath it, at the path that led to the Moon Spring. "Her memory is here. That's enough."Apollo reached into his tunic and pulled out the silver coin."She gave this to me," he said. "But I want you to keep it. Until I see her again."Her eyes filled with tears. She nodded.Apollo turned and walked toward the forest. The path was overgrown now. No one came here anymore. But he knew the way. He had walked it a thousand times when he was young. He reached the Moon Spring. The water was clear and cold. The same rocks sat by the edge, worn smooth by years of us

  • I Broke His Heart to Save Him   Chapter 10

(Aria's POV)Three days passed.Apollo didn't leave my side. He slept in the chair by my bed, his head tilted back, his mouth slightly open. He ate the plain bread and watered wine the temple attendants brought, without complaining. He held my hand when the pain got bad. He read to me from a scroll he found in the temple library, some old epic poem with torn edges and faded ink.My mother came and went. She brought me clean tunics, my favorite honeyed tea, a small carving of my father that I kept on the bedside table. She and Apollo didn't talk much, but I saw her watching him. I saw the anger in her eyes soften, just a little. On the third day, Chloe came. She wasn't alone. The North Wind King walked beside her, his face hard as stone. They stood in the doorway of my room. The King's eyes swept over me, the bandage, the gray skin, and his expression didn't change."Apollo," he said. "Come home."Apollo didn't stand up. He didn't let go of my hand."No," he said. The King's jaw tighten

  • I Broke His Heart to Save Him   Chapter 9

(Apollo's POV)Aria's room was at the end of the third-floor hallway. The door was closed.Aria's mother stopped outside. She turned to face him."She doesn't have much time," she said. "The healer said maybe a month, but—" She shook her head. "She's getting weaker every day.""I know," Apollo said. "I know.""And she doesn't know you're coming. She didn't want you to find her. She wanted you to move on. To live your life."Apollo swallowed. "I know."She opened the door. The room was small. A bed, a cabinet, a chair. The curtains were drawn, but a small oil lamp on the bedside table gave off a soft golden glow.Aria was lying in the bed.She was so thin. Thinner than he had ever seen her. Her cheekbones stood out sharply. Her collarbones were visible above the edge of the blanket. Her skin was pale, not just pale but grayish, like ash.A cloth soaked in herbs lay across her forehead. A small clay bowl of dark liquid sat on the cabinet beside her bed. There was a bandage on her forehea

  • I Broke His Heart to Save Him   Chapter 8

(Aria's POV)Apollo didn't know the truth. Not really. He knew I was cursed, but he didn't know how badly. He knew something was wrong with me, but he didn't know I was already dying. The night I got home from the pavilion, I coughed up blood. Dark and thick, staining my tunic and pooling on the white linen. My mother screamed. She sent for the temple healer at the second hour of the night. The healer came. She was old, with gray hair and kind eyes. She had treated me for eight years. She had watched me go from healthy to dying. She had held my hand through every ritual. She had wept with my mother when nothing worked. That night, she took one look at me and her face went hard."The curse has reached her core," she told my mother. "At this rate, she has perhaps a month."My mother collapsed. She fell to her knees on the stone floor and grabbed the healer's hands."You said three months. You said she had three months. How can it be—""The fall. The impact." The healer shook her head.

  • I Broke His Heart to Save Him   Chapter 7

(Apollo's POV)The next morning, Apollo left the temple chamber before Chloe woke. He left a note, a lie, saying he had to handle something for the ceremony. But he didn't handle anything for the ceremony. He took his chariot and drove. He drove through the polis, past the Moon Spring, past the house where he had grown up. He drove in circles for an hour. Then he stopped outside Aria's estate. He sat there for a long time with the reins loose in his hands, staring at the front gate.Eight years ago, he had stood at that gate for three days and three nights. He had smashed his fist into the temple pillar until his knuckles bled. He had shouted until his voice gave out. "Aria! Come out! Tell me why! Who is he? Who is the man you kissed by the river bank?"She never came out. She just stood behind the second-floor window, watching him through the glass, crying. He didn't understand then. He thought her tears were guilt. He thought she was crying because she had been caught. Now he wasn't

  • I Broke His Heart to Save Him   Chapter 6

(Apollo's POV)Apollo couldn't stop thinking about the way Aria had looked at him at the end. That look in her eyes, love and goodbye and pain all tangled together, followed him everywhere. He saw it when he closed his eyes. He felt it in his chest like a stone.Even after the healer at the temple said Chloe and the child were fine, just a scare with no real harm, Apollo felt nothing. No relief. No joy. Just that heavy, aching stone.Once Chloe fell asleep, he walked out of the room and stood in the hallway. He stared at the white marble wall and tried to breathe. He reached through the frayed soul-thread. Nothing. Just silence. She had blocked him again. Or maybe she just didn't want to speak to him. He couldn't blame her.He thought about how he had ended up with Chloe in the first place. It felt like a nightmare he couldn't wake from.He had met her during his service in the frozen wastes beyond the North Wind. A blizzard trapped a royal caravan, and Chloe was among them, the daught
