Chapter 2

ผู้เขียน: Sticky Candy
Vance was rushed to the hospital to have his stomach pumped.

The doctor said it was mild poisoning from improperly prepared wild mushrooms, and that caused him to hallucinate.

The news allowed everyone to breathe a sigh of relief, except me.

I sat on a bench in the hallway, my hands and feet ice-cold. Hallucinations could make people ramble, but they couldn't make someone invent a whole story about a hotel, a baby, and a plan to seize my trust fund.

Dad sat down beside me, his face grim. Even though we were not close, I believed that, as my father, he would stand up for me.

Yet, after a long silence, he said, "Tiana, let's put what happened tonight behind us."

I couldn't believe what he had just said.

"Dad, what do you mean?"

Dad waved his hand dismissively, looking exhausted. "Vance has a bright future ahead of him, and we've already sent out the invitations to the engagement party. He was talking crazy because of the mushrooms. You can't take it seriously."

I looked at him. "So you think the part about Vance having a child with Brie is a lie too?"

Dad's expression darkened. "She's been with me for seven years. I know her better than anyone. But you…"

He looked at me suspiciously. "Weren't you the one who had someone buy those wild mushrooms?"

I clenched my fists. "You think I poisoned Vance?"

Dad didn't respond. But his silence was an admission.

Just then, Brie walked over to us, her eyes red. When she spoke, her tone was gentle, though it carried a hint of reproach. "Tiana, Vance may not come from much, but he's going to be your husband soon. How could you hurt him just because he's more successful than you now?"

I was never one to take things lying down, so I snapped, "Brie, how dare you slander me?"

She flinched, and her tears came even faster. "Marie saw you bringing those mushrooms into the kitchen this afternoon."

Dad swiveled around and looked at me, his expression conflicted.

I snorted. "So you're saying that I'm a petty woman who can't stand my man being more talented than me, and that's why I poisoned him?"

Brie shook her head. "That's not what I meant. You're too headstrong. I'm scared you'll do something drastic. Vance nearly died, and the baby…" She trailed off, covering her mouth, as if realizing that she had let too much slip.

Dad stiffened. "Baby?"

Brie froze. Then, all of a sudden, she dropped to her knees. "Mike, I'm sorry. I'm pregnant."

Dad staggered back several steps, but soon, his shock turned into joy. He had always wanted a son to carry on the family business.

Tears streaming down her face, Brie explained, "I actually wanted to tell you after Tiana's engagement party because I was afraid she'd overthink it and that it would affect your relationship with her. I never expected Vance to start talking nonsense tonight and turn everything into a mess…"

Dad stepped forward to help her up. His movements were careful and gentle, like he was handling something precious.

Meanwhile, I stood there like an outsider. I should have been the one falling apart tonight. Yet everyone was gathered around Brie, acting as if I were the one who had done something wrong.

The fiance I'd supported with all my heart never loved me.

The man I called my father suspected me and doubted me.

It felt like a hole had been torn open in my chest, with cold wind rushing through it.

A while later, Vance regained consciousness. He leaned against the bed, his face pale. He gave no explanation, only asking, "Tiana, did you misunderstand again?"

I walked over to him. "You don't remember what you said?"

Vance rubbed his temples, looking dazed. "The doctor said I hallucinated because of the poisoning. Are you seriously going to use that nonsense against me?"

His words from earlier came rushing back to me. My tone turned biting. "Nonsense? I think you were just letting your true feelings slip! Being with me must have been so miserable for you. You sure know how to play both sides, huh?"

A flicker of guilt crossed Vance's eyes before he quickly composed himself. He replied, "You're probably just stressed about the wedding. I'll get a therapist for you."

I raised my hand and slapped him.

Vance's head snapped to the side. He pressed his tongue against the inside of his cheek.

Dad roared, "Enough!"

Brie cried out in panic, "Don't do anything rash! You can talk it out."

I watched their reactions, and suddenly, I found the whole thing utterly pointless. So I turned around and left.

When I reached the elevator, my phone vibrated. The butler I'd stationed at home had sent me a photo.

In the bag Brie had left in the bathroom was a prenatal report. She was eight weeks pregnant. Vance's initials were written in the section for the baby's father.

And underneath the prenatal report was a copy of my mom Peggy Roth's death certificate.

I stared hard at the abnormal drug reaction that had been circled in red.

The elevator doors opened in front of me, then closed again. It felt like my feet were rooted to the ground, leaving me unable to take a single step.

I had changed my last name to Mom's. From then on, I was just Tiana Roth. I wasn't Mike's daughter or Vance's fiance. I was about to go onstage when a security guard came over in a hurry. "Dr. Roth, an investor from Zethor wants to see you."I furrowed my brows. "Tell him to leave if he doesn't have an appointment."The sound of someone calling my name from the entrance stopped me cold. I looked up and saw a stranger standing there. Then I saw his eyes.I recognized Vance at once. The way he looked at me was sickeningly familiar. He smiled. "I'm out. Brie changed her testimony, and most of the charges ended up falling on her. I was only her accomplice. Tiana, I came to find you.""Get lost!" I snapped. He acted like he hadn't heard me and kept walking toward me. "I know you hate me. But I've been thinking about you every day for the past year. I even changed my name and had plastic surgery. Let's start over."It seemed that in his eyes, some wounds could be erased with a singl

He looked at me, his voice betraying a hint of nervousness when he spoke. "Tiana, I'm Richard. I'm your father."Richard Sinclair was nothing like I had imagined. I thought he would be emotional and full of guilt, desperate to explain everything that had happened back then. Instead, he just stood three steps away from me, so restrained that it was almost as if he were afraid to come any closer."I have no right to ask you to acknowledge me. I just heard you were going abroad, so I came to see you."I tightened my grip on the USB drive Mom had left behind, my throat growing tight. "You knew I existed?"He nodded. "I did. When your mom was pregnant with you, something happened to my family. By the time I dealt with it and came back, she had already married Mike and refused to see me. Later, I went abroad for treatment and lost touch with everyone back home."Richard's voice remained calm, but I noticed how tightly he was gripping his cane, his knuckles turning white."All these y

"Mike, you abandoned me first."He lowered his head and said nothing.I placed the signed papers on the nightstand. "Starting today, Aaron will be your temporary medical power of attorney. I'm leaving the country. We don't need to see each other again."As I turned to leave, I heard him cry quietly behind me. I didn't stop.I had just reached the elevator when Aaron's phone rang. Whatever he heard made his expression change."Ms. Kemp, Vance has requested to see you. He says he knows where your mom hid the last set of experimental data."I decided to meet him for Mom's sake.Vance sat behind thick glass in a jail uniform. He looked nothing like the man who used to be at the top of the world. His eyes lit up as soon as he saw me. "You really came."I picked up the receiver. "Talk."Vance smiled bitterly. "You can't even be bothered to speak to me now?"I frowned, my patience wearing thin. "You have three minutes left."Vance pressed his lips together before finally speaking.

People started chattering.I looked at Brie, feeling strangely calm. "My mom didn't cheat on her husband. When she married Mike, he knew she was pregnant with me. He took resources from the Sinclair family and signed an agreement to raise me and keep everything confidential."Do you want me to put them on the screen now?"Brie had wanted to tear me down completely. She never expected that I already knew everything.I kept going. "It doesn't matter whether I'm really part of the Kemp family. What you should know is that everything my mom left behind never belonged to the Kemp family, and it certainly doesn't belong to the Topp family."At that moment, the hospital called. Aaron answered, and his expression shifted immediately. He handed me the phone.A nurse's hurried voice came through the line. "Ms. Kemp, your father is awake. He's very upset after watching your livestream."I paused.Mike was awake.Brie's eyes lit up, and she called out through her tears. "Mike, you have to

"Brie, once I marry Tiana, the trust fund that her mom left behind will be ours…"We can't let that old bastard find out about the baby you're carrying…"That idiot Tiana is still living in her own little fantasy, thinking I love her…"Guests started whispering among themselves as they pulled out their phones to record what was happening.Irina screamed, "Turn it off! Turn it off now!"Vance tried to rush the stage, but the security guards Aaron had arranged for the event pinned him to the ground.I watched him struggle on the floor, looking pathetic. Finally, my anger exploded. "Vance, you asshole! You and Brie killed my mom seven years ago, and now you're still trying to trick me into marrying you. Do you really think I don't know Brie is pregnant with your kid?"The video cut to another scene, showing Brie slipping something into the formula while Vance stood outside the lab.Everyone went silent."What a bastard!" someone in the crowd shouted. That was all it took. Soon,

Panic flashed in Vance's eyes, but he quickly hid it. "You don't have proof."I looked at him, a faint smile playing on my lips. The tension in the air was thick.Brie walked over and gently patted Vance on the arm. "Vance, don't argue with Tiana."Vance reached out and steadied her without even thinking. He did it so naturally, like he'd done it countless times before.By the time he realized what he had done, I had already taken a picture.Brie's face stiffened. "Tiana, were you just taking a picture of me?"I slipped my phone back into my pocket. "Well, I have to have a little record of how close my fiance and my stepmother are."Vance finally dropped his gentle act. "Tiana, what will it take for you to let this go?"I swallowed the hatred rising in my chest and looked at him. "You'll find out tonight."The light above the operating room finally went out, and the doctor walked toward us with a grim expression. "He's out of immediate danger for now, but he was given a subst
