Chapter 17: Dealing With Her

Maya's POV

Larry's gaze was on me like he was hurt, like he wished I'd stepped up instead and told him the wife was me and not her.

But the truth is, he also didn't try to rectify it. He didn't tell the man he had presumed wrong and I'm his wife.

That was because I'm not. I wouldn't ever be able to claim that title.

The man left and then my gaze landed on the person who had been standing behind him.

Marvin.

His gaze was darkened and I could tell he was angry, but he did his best to mask it.

Then his gaze darted from me to Larry. “Hey there,” Marvin greeted him as he came to stand beside me.

“Hi” Larry's voice was restrained, like he didn't want to speak with Marvin because he might have stolen his project, his two years worth of money.

Marvin's gaze cascaded over Brandy in disgust before he moved the gaze back to me.

“Let's go in” he stretched his hand over to me.

“I stared for a moment, not taking the hand and then Larry's voice came. “She's my

CHAPTER 156 – THE LISTENING SHADOWWhen I finally turned, I saw Xves standing there.Relief slammed into me like a wave. My whole body sagged before my mind could even catch up. My heart had been running a marathon since the moment I heard that voice, and now it was trying to slow down—but it couldn’t. I pressed a hand over my chest, half laughing, half choking on the panic that hadn’t yet left me.“Xves,” I whispered, breathless. “Jesus—you scared me.”He stood there in the faint moonlight, looking completely out of place among the trimmed hedges and marble fountains. Black suit, loose tie, hair a little messy like he’d run his hand through it one too many times. And of course, that smirk. The one that always looked like he’d just caught me doing something stupid—which, to be fair, I probably was.“Don’t make a sound,” I said, putting a finger to my lips.He tilted his head. “Seriously?” he mouthed, eyebrows raised. “You followed them out here barefoot?”I rolled my eyes, mouthing ba

CHAPTER 155 – THE SHADOWED PATHHe and the man left.Just like that—conversation over, tension unresolved, and they both started walking toward the exit like the rest of the world had suddenly stopped existing.I froze, still standing by the champagne table, pretending to admire the bubbles in my glass when really my mind was racing.Where were they going?Mr. Watterson didn’t seem like the type to step out for fresh air. Not after barking at someone in front of half the room. And that other man—the one with the slicked-back hair—he had that look. The kind of man who didn’t talk for long unless it involved something illegal, expensive, or both.I set my drink down and slipped into the moving crowd. No one noticed me this time. Good. Maybe scandal had its perks—it made people too uncomfortable to make eye contact. The auctioneer’s voice echoed faintly from the stage, calling for everyone to take their seats, but I wasn’t interested in overpriced art tonight. My attention was locked on

  • I DIVORCED HIM! NOW, HE REGRETS   THE UNINVITED QUESTIONS

CHAPTER 154 – THE UNINVITED QUESTIONSI wondered what the right way to approach Liam was.Friendly, maybe. Or neutral enough not to sound like I’d rehearsed the line ten times in my head. I didn’t want to come off desperate, but also didn’t want to stand there like an idiot staring at him across the ballroom. So, I took a breath, smoothed my dress, and walked toward him.The crowd had started to loosen up now that the auction was near. Laughter rolled across the room, too bright for the tension that still clung beneath the chandelier light. A waiter bumped my arm lightly as I passed, muttering an apology. The air smelled of champagne, perfume, and secrets.Liam looked up before I reached him, his expression the same unreadable mask he always wore—like he’d already predicted what I was going to say and was bored of it. His dark hair was slightly tousled, his tie undone just enough to make him look effortlessly reckless.“Hey,” I said with a small smile, trying to sound casual. “What ar

  • I DIVORCED HIM! NOW, HE REGRETS   THE SILENT CROWD

CHAPTER 153 – THE SILENT CROWDWhen will this cocktail reception end and the actual auction begin? That question had been circling in my head like a broken record for the last thirty minutes. My heels ached, my cheeks hurt from pretending to smile, and the back of my neck was sticky from nerves and champagne air.The ballroom glittered under soft chandeliers, all crystal light and fake laughter. The kind of laughter that bounced too loud, too bright, because nobody wanted to admit they were bored—or uncomfortable. Damian was somewhere across the room, doing what he did best: being charming on my behalf. He’d slipped into a group of executives, laughing like they were all best friends, while I stood at the edge of the crowd like an unwanted guest at my own party.Grace was gone. Kicked out. Her absence felt heavier than the pearls around my neck. Every time someone glanced my way, I could see the story replaying in their heads—the scandal, the macaron, the rejection. I could practicall

CHAPTER 152 – THE RUDE REJECTIONGunther didn’t leave right away. I could feel his stare digging into my back even after Grace had been escorted out. The crowd began to move again, whispering under the soft thrum of violins. Everyone wanted to pretend nothing happened, but their eyes kept flicking toward us like we were the last scene in a scandalous play.I turned to grab my clutch, ready to leave before I did something criminal—like pour champagne on his overpriced shoes—but then I heard his voice again. Smooth, deep, too confident.“Maya Perkins.”I turned slowly. “You have got to be kidding me.”He smiled—no, smirked—like the universe owed him attention. His tie was loosened now, and his arrogance had settled into something darker. “You know, you’ve got quite the attitude for someone who serves dessert for a living.”I arched a brow. “And you’ve got quite the ego for someone who got beaten by a macaron.”The words hit, and I knew it because the corner of his mouth twitched. But in

  • I DIVORCED HIM! NOW, HE REGRETS   THE PRICE OF A MACARON

CHAPTER 151 – THE PRICE OF A MACARONI turned slowly—only to see him.Gunther.He was back. And this time, he wasn’t alone. Two bulky men in black suits flanked him, both built like refrigerators with faces carved from concrete. The crowd instinctively parted again, whispering like waves against the ballroom walls.“Are you kidding me?” I muttered under my breath.Gunther’s expression was carved in fury, his jaw tight, his eyes gleaming with something dark and vindictive. The smear of frosting was gone, but the red mark of humiliation wasn’t. Not from his cheek—and definitely not from his pride. He stopped a few feet away, his polished shoes gleaming under the chandelier light. The silence was thick, brittle, dangerous. You could practically taste the gossip buzzing through the air.“What’s going on?” I asked, though I already knew.“Throw her out of here,” Gunther barked, pointing directly at Grace. The words cut through the air like shards of glass. Gasps scattered across the room —
