Alvara

I'd spent the past two weeks at home designing the product sketch for Mr Reed based on our collaborative ideas but I could barely focus.

This was because Kai hadn't been coming home frequently. He always had one excuse to give or the other but it was clear he was avoiding me.

The front door opens as Kai walks through it. He doesn't say Hi or even acknowledge my existence.

This was really getting to me. He'd just managed to come home since he left this morning. It was 10pm in the evening!

Looking up from my product sketch at him, I asked. “Are you going out again?“

“Yeah, I have some things to take care of“ He replies, pulling off his winter coat that was hung on the wall. “How's your product sketch coming along?“

I scoffed. “Are you really curious about that?“

“Of course, I am“

Then be here. God damnit!

“Well, I can barely focus and that's all thanks to you“

Kai furrowed his brow, confused. “Thanks to me? What did I do?“

Was he seriously asking because he didn't know or was he just playing dumb?

“Just admit it, Kai. It's clearly obvious that the reason why you haven't been coming home lately is because you're avoiding me“ I say. “Are you getting tired of me already? Maybe I really am the problem“

“You're not and don't ever say something like that again“ He retorts. “Yes, I've been avoiding you but it has nothing to do with you“

“I don't believe you“

“I'm a man, Alvara. Living under the same roof as a woman who I'd loved for 5 years.“ He explains. “How do you expect me to react when she suddenly kisses me out of the blue, one day or publicly reveals to the press that we're engaged to be married while holding my hand affectionately?“

That stinged.

“Are you saying you didn't like any of those?“

“What I'm saying is that you keep getting my hopes up when you clearly don't feel the same way about me“ He corrects.

“Who says I don't feel the same way about you?“ I asked. “I do know I am physically attracted to you“

“But do you like me? Do you see yourself falling in love with me?“

I don't respond. It was too soon to answer anyways. I'd just come out from a divorce with a man I truly loved.

I hadn't even yet completely healed from that. Could I possibly open my heart to another?

“I wasn't trying to hurt you by avoiding you. I'm sorry if it made you feel that way“ Kai states. “I just didn't want to make you uncomfortable. It's the least thing I want“

“I really have to work overnight at the office tonight so I won't be coming home“ He adds. “Make sure to lock the doors before you sleep“

No. I wasn't going to let Kai leave just like that.

“Wait!“ I called out, springing up from the chair; halting Kai's steps. “Give me a little more time. It might be selfish of me to ask but please do“

“After this project with Reed is over, I'll give you my answer“ I continued. “Until then, can you come home? It's quite lonely without you here“

“It wouldn't make you uncomfortable?“ He asked.

I shook my head, “No, it wouldn't“

Kai walked towards me and gently placed a soft kiss on my forehead.

“Then, I'll be home tomorrow morning after my night shift“ He whispers. “Goodnight“

I felt giddy. Like a little kid who had just been given her favourite candy.

“Goodnight“

“I'll be home by the time you wake up in the morning. I promise“

With that said, Kai takes his leave.

Throwing myself down onto the chair, I felt more energized and focused to work on my product sketch.

When the product sketch was complete, I video called Mr Reed to get his opinion off it. I was relieved to hear he didn't have much corrections to make but was rather impressed by it.

“Finally done“ I let out a yawn as my gaze shifted to the wall clock. “It's 4am. Should I wait for Kai until he gets back home?“

In as much as I struggled to keep my eyes opened, they felt heavy.

“I'll just sleep for a short while“ I murmured, moving to the bedroom and climbing onto the bed. “I'll set an alarm for 6am. Kai should have been home by then“

When my alarm was all set, I took a short nap. Or so I thought.

Slowly opening my eyes after a while, I saw Kai's face in front of me.

I gasped, covering my face. “When did you get home?“

“And how long have you been watching me sleep?“

A slow smile spreads across his lips, “About 10 minutes ago. I couldn't bring myself to take my eyes off you. You look so beautiful in the morning“

Again. Again, I felt my heart skip.

Reaching out for my phone, I realized that my alarm was turned off.

“Did you turn off my alarm, Kai?“ I asked.

“Yeah. You were sleeping so soundly that I didn't want it to wake you“

He reaches out for my product sketch.

“Is this the end result of your product?“ He asked.

Sitting upright on the bed, my gaze raked through his half unbuttoned shirt and his entire form. He looked good for someone that pulled an all nighter.

Clearing my throat, I snapped out of my lewd thought.

“Yeah, that's it“ I respond. “Reed approved of it so we'll start designing it right away. The launch on shouldn't be far off either“

“Good. I'm glad you could finish this quickly. How long do you think it would take for the product to be made and it's launch on?“

“Three weeks at most“

Kai's frown deepened, “Three weeks, huh?“

“Is there a problem, Kai?“ I asked. “Is there something you want to tell me?“

Letting out a heavy sigh, he reveals. “You see, I got a call for the police this morning shortly before I came home“

The police? That means..

“Williams...“

Kai nods, confirming my fear. “He escaped“

  • I DIVORCED MY HUSBAND–THEN, MARRIED HIS BROTHER    DON'T CONTROL IT

Kai“This is unbelievable“ My mother grumbles as she straightens my suit. “I can't believe you're getting married to the same woman that divorced—and ruined your brother's name. I mean, what do you two see in that woman anyways?““Point of correction, mother. Williams deceived Alvara“I corrected her, straightening my tie. “He sold off her company's product design and Idea to her rival company. Not just that but he sold her house to the bank as a collateral for a loan he had no interest in paying back“ “So what? Williams isn't perfect. No one is““If you don't like Alvara, mother then why are you here?“ I asked. “You didn't have to come to my wedding““Of course I did. Your father already swore he wouldn't show up so I had to“ Staring at my reflection in the mirror, a wide smile spreads across my face as I recount the day Alvara proposed to me back at the her launch on gala. She really was full of surprises and I couldn't wait to discover what other surprises she had up her sleeves

  • I DIVORCED MY HUSBAND–THEN, MARRIED HIS BROTHER    WILL YOU MARRY ME?

Alvara“Congratulations on a successful launch-on!“ Ava Reed, the wife of Davidson Reed cheers me as we clink wine glasses together. Ava Reed wasn't a stranger to me though. In fact, we went to the same high school together although we weren't close. Williams hadn't shown himself to me ever since Kai informed me he'd escaped the cops. I hoped it would continue to remain that way and he wouldn't ruin today's launch. After three weeks of hardwork in developing this product, Davidson Reed had put together this night gala and invited all prestigious business men—and women in the industry to publicly launch the product into the market. “Thank you, Ava“ “I mentioned to my husband many times that he should consider collaborating with your company for old time's sake but he never gave in“ She reveals. “I wonder what on earth Kai told him to persuade him“ It wasn't news to me that Kai had a hand on my collaborative project with Reed. I mean, he was the one who'd set up the meeting betwee

  • I DIVORCED MY HUSBAND–THEN, MARRIED HIS BROTHER    ENGAGED TO BE MARRIED

Kai“I'd be taking a huge gamble on this investment, Miss Alvara“ Davidson Reed, the CEO of Vintage enterprises says to Alvara. “Can you promise me that I won't come to regret my decision?“ I'd set up this meeting between Reed and Alvara. I was confident that their collaboration would be the best way to help Alvara's company bounce back into the spotlight. Reed only decided to meet up with Alvara if I came along but fuck it, my mind wasn't even on their conversation right now. It was on that kiss with Alvara from earlier. Why did she kiss me? I mean, she was clearly aware of how I felt for her. If she didn't feel the same, what was that kiss for?Damn. I was confused as hell but I want to kiss her again—if she lets me. My gaze lands on Alvara's lips as she discusses some inaudible nonsense with Reed. Those soft lips. I want them again. She turned to face me, “What do you think, Kai?“I snapped out of my thoughts. What did I think about what?“I think it's a really good idea.“ I

  • I DIVORCED MY HUSBAND–THEN, MARRIED HIS BROTHER    MAKE THE MOST OUT OF IT

AlvaraI couldn't sleep a wink all through last night. Not after those words Kai said. He'd liked me for 5years? How was that even possible? We hadn't even known each other that long. With a confession like that, there was no way I could sleep in the same room with Kai. By the way, he'd insisted on sleeping in the same room thing since we were going to be "married" after all. “And why can't my heart stop beating so fast?“ I scolded myself while cleaning the kitchen to get last night's confession out of my head but it only lingered on more. “Maybe it's because I haven't been confessed to in so long“ Even my face felt flushed. I grumbled, “Really, what was Kai thinking confessing to me like that?“ “Good morning“ A voice greets me from the kitchen door. It was Kai. He was dressed in the thick black sleeveless singlet he'd used to sleep in last night. His black hair was messy and all over the place. As he moved to the fridge, pulled out a bottle of water and drank it, I noticed how

  • I DIVORCED MY HUSBAND–THEN, MARRIED HIS BROTHER    BECAUSE I LIKE YOU

KaiAs I exited Alvara's house, I couldn't stop smiling to myself as Christopher, my chauffeur who had been standing by the car door opened up for me. Climbing in, I let out a hearty laugh. I hadn't expected Alvara to give into my requirements for marriage but she had. She must be really eager to settle the scores with Williams. Since she'd just gotten divorced, I suggested our marriage should be put off until we'd gotten back everything Williams took from her. Till then, we would be engaged and she would have to move into my house as I possibly couldn't let her stay in that half-empty house much longer. She agreed without putting up a fight. I was still laughing when my chauffeur, Christopher climbed into the driver's seat and started the car. “You seem to be in a good mood, sir“ Christopher noticed. “Did your talk with my lady go well?““Oh, it went well alright“ “I'm glad to hear that. Where to now, sir? Should I take you home?“No. Alvara would need some time alone at my p
