Sandra’s POV

I stood in that records room for a long time.

Long enough for the light through the small window to shift. Long enough for my legs to remind me I’d been standing in the same position without moving. I read the signature three more times and it stayed the same every time which meant I wasn’t misreading it and I wasn’t misunderstanding it and the thing I was looking at was simply true.

Vanessa’s mother had signed a contract that included my name before I was born.

I folded the docume

  • I Died Loving You, I Woke Up Hating You    Chapter 11 — The Weight Of Almost Knowing

Sandra’s POVI didn’t sleep again.I laid in the dark and listened to the estate settle around me — the old sounds, the creak of the upper corridor, wind against the east wing windows — and turned Vanessa’s visit over and over until the edges were worn smooth and it still didn’t make sense.I am trying to keep you alive.Six years I’d lived alongside that woman. Six years of watching her move through rooms like she owned the air in them, of making myself smaller so she could be larger, of telling myself the careful attention she paid me was sisterly in some distant uncomplicated way. In six years she had never once said anything to me that felt like it came from somewhere real.Tonight it had come from somewhere real.Which was its own kind of terrifying because if Vanessa was frightened then whatever was moving underneath this house was serious enough to frighten someone who didn’t frighten easily. And if she was trying to protect me then she knew specifically what I needed protectin

I read the signature three more times and it stayed the same every time which meant I wasn’t misreading it and I wasn’t misunderstanding it and the thing I was looking at was simply true.Vanessa’s mother had signed a contract that included my name before I was born.I folded the document and put it back where I’d found it. Not because I was done with it — because taking it meant someone would notice it was gone and I wasn’t ready for anyone to know I’d been in here. I memorized the shelf, the position, the two records it was filed between. I could find it again in the dark if I needed to.Then I left and walked upstairs and sat on my bed and thought. The agreement was territorial. That much was clear from the language around my name — the clause referenced land rights, pack b

  • I Died Loving You, I Woke Up Hating You    Chapter 9 — Written Before I Breathed

Sandra’s POVI didn’t turn around immediately.I folded the document back along its crease first. Slow, deliberate, making sure my hands were steady before I did anything else. Then I tucked it into the inside of my jacket, against my ribs, and turned around.Zadok.He was standing just inside the doorway with one hand still on the frame and his eyes on me in that way he had lately — like he was trying to solve something and I was the only variable he couldn’t account for. The records room was small enough that six feet felt closer than it was. The single window behind me put him in shadow and me in light which I didn’t love.“This is becoming a pattern,” I said.“You keep ending up in places I wasn’t expecting.”“It’s a big estate. People move through it.”He stepped inside and let the door swing mostly shut behind him and looked around the room briefly before bringing his eyes back to me. “Nobody comes in here. I checked the last entry log — three years ago.”“I like old records,” I

  • I Died Loving You, I Woke Up Hating You    Chapter 8 — Four Words

Sandra’s POVI read it a third time. You were never safe. The handwriting was neat. Controlled. The kind you develop when you’ve been taught to write properly rather than the kind that just happens naturally. No signature. No indication of who’d sent it or why or what exactly it was supposed to mean.I folded it back along its crease and stood in my doorway and looked at the empty corridor where the man had been and thought about what kind of person sends a warning through someone else’s hands. Someone who wanted distance between themselves and the message. Someone who needed me to know something without being able to be connected to the knowing.Someone who was afraid.I went back inside and sat at my desk and put the note flat in front of me and the wolfbane casing beside it and looked at both of them together. In the first life I’d died believing the dagger was about Zadok. Someone wanted him dead, I’d gotten in the way, simple brutal arithmetic. I’d spent my last conscious minutes

  • I Died Loving You, I Woke Up Hating You    Chapter 7 — Things Left Unturned

Sandra’s POVI closed my hand around the casing and stood there in the doorway for a moment just breathing.Wolfbane. In my room. Before the Blood Ceremony, before the dagger, before any of it — someone was already moving pieces around a board I hadn’t known I was sitting on the first time. I’d spent six years in this house thinking I was invisible and apparently I’d been wrong about that too.“When,” I said.“This morning. Between breakfast and when you came back from the grounds.” Dara’s voice was steady but her hands weren’t. She had them folded together in that specific way she did when she was holding herself in. “I went in to change the linen and I could tell. The things on your desk were a quarter inch from where you leave them. Your trunk was unlocked. Whoever it was, was careful. Just not careful enough.”I looked down at the casing in my palm. Small. Professional. Not something you picked up at a market stall — this was made for precision, for carrying a concentrated amount

  • I Died Loving You, I Woke Up Hating You    Chapter 6 — Too Close To The Fire

Sandra’s POVI turned around slowly. Not quickly — quickly would’ve looked guilty and I had nothing to be guilty about. I was standing in a corridor. People stood in corridors. I turned at a pace that said I heard my name and responded to it, nothing more.Zadok was maybe six feet away. Close enough that I could see the slight tension around his eyes that meant he was working something out and hadn’t finished yet. He was still in his training clothes — dark, fitted, the kind of effortless that probably wasn’t effortless at all — and he was looking at me with that expression I still didn’t have a name for.Behind me the door was still slightly open. I didn’t look back at it.“You’re not training,” he said.“I finished early.”“I watched you leave mid-session.”So he’d been at the grounds. I hadn’t seen him and I’d been watching the whole time, which meant he’d arrived after I’d left, or he’d been somewhere I hadn’t thought to look. Both options were annoying in different ways.“I neede
