Chapter 6

Penulis: Peachy
Three years passed in a blur.

This family had completely forgotten Derek ever existed.

Without him, everything was better.

My daughter, my little moonlight, was enrolled in the best academy on our territory.

She was smart and brave, an outstanding pup praised by all her teachers.

The Alpha's health had completely recovered under my careful watch. He was now full of energy every day.

In the mornings, he handled pack business with the Elders. In the afternoons, he taught the young wolves fighting techniques in the forest clearing.

His mate had found new joy as well. She organized a group for the pack's she-wolves. They had tea, arranged flowers, and discussed the latest fashions. Her life was elegant and fulfilling.

I was no longer the mate who just stayed at home, waiting for her Alpha's favor.

Using my eye for art and my in-laws' connections, I joined the family business, in charge of developing the luxury goods and art investment department.

My instincts proved to be sharp and ruthless. In just three years, I had generated incredible profits for the family.

I became the high-powered executive everyone admired, the department head with real authority.

The old Elena, the one who had to live at the mercy of her Alpha, was dead.

The new Elena lived only for herself and her family.

Our family had completely moved on from the shadows of the past, forming a new, stable, and even more harmonious unit.

The absence of a father figure had almost no effect on my daughter.

Her grandfather gave her double the love, and I never planned to hide the truth from her.

She was seven now; she understood a lot.

It was far better for her to recognize the harshness of reality than to live in a beautiful, fake illusion.

This family might have another Alpha in the future.

But that wolf would absolutely not be Derek.

The role of "father" was not irreplaceable.

Just when we all thought life would continue on this peaceful, happy path, the "dead man" we had all forgotten decided to crawl out of his grave.

After all these years, that post Derek made on the werewolf forum was bumped to the top again.

It was the same overseas IP address. He had posted an update in the comments.

[Brothers, after a few years out here, I've realized these other women are just... meh. I'm getting tired of it, kind of miss home. Anyone got any good ideas on how I can waltz back into the lives of my mate and pup?]

When I said I would handle it, I wasn't just trying to comfort my mother-in-law.From the first day I saw Derek again, I had hired the best private investigator in the galaxy to look into everything he'd been up to while he was away.A few days later, a detailed report landed in my encrypted inbox. It turned out that Derek's little fling from back then, that Omega named Lily, wasn't an intern at all. She was a corporate spy from a rival family. After they went abroad, Lily quickly cleaned out Derek's bank accounts, then set a trap that got him beaten half to death by a vicious local Rogue pack. He was stuck in a hospital for almost a year.So his story about "having an accident" wasn't a complete lie.By the time he got out of the hospital, his visa had expired and he was flat broke. To survive and hide from the rival pack that was still after him, he had to shack up with the sister of his boss at the restaurant where he worked—a Rogue she-wolf who weighed over three hundred pounds and

Because he'd been removed from the pack registry, Derek had no official status.Combined with the attempted assault, he was immediately detained by the Enforcers. As he was led out of the interrogation room, his face ashen, he ran right into his parents, who had rushed over as soon as they heard. His mother didn't say a word. She just marched up and gave him several hard slaps across the face. His father used his cane like a whip, hitting Derek so much he spun in place like a top.The nearby Enforcers tried to step in, but they couldn't stop them."Dad! Mom! Look at me, I'm your son!" Derek shrieked in despair, scurrying away while covering his head. His father, a man who had been a perfect gentleman his entire life, hawked and spat right on him."I have no son as disgusting as you!"His mother pulled the official certificate of removal, signed by the council of elders, from her handbag and shoved it in Derek's face. "Read it and weep! My son died years ago!"Derek stared at the paper

"If you don't want anyone to know, don't do it in the first place."I looked down on him, my gaze as cold as a poisoned blade. "You should have thought of this day back when you were so pleased with yourself for being clever enough to abandon us.""Now that you're done playing around and can't make it on your own, you suddenly remember me?"I curled my lip into a sneer. "What makes you think we would all just wait for you? Derek, take a good long look in the mirror. Look at the pathetic mess you are now. Do you really think you're worthy?"Every word I said was a sharp knife, stripping away the last shreds of his pathetic pride.Without warning, he dropped to his knees in front of me, blocking my path with his arms."Elena, I was wrong, I was so wrong," he sobbed, a pathetic coward who had lost all his dignity. "I lost my mind back then, I was a beast! Please, I'm begging you, just give me one more chance."He was crying miserably."My parents don't want me, my daughter doesn't know me

Derek's attempt to get help online backfired, and he became a laughingstock among all the packs. He must have hit rock bottom. That evening, just as I was leaving the office, he darted out from the shadows."Elena," he said, grabbing my arm. His eyes were a complicated mix of emotions. "We need to talk."I glanced at the curious stares from my coworkers. I had no desire for my family's dirty laundry to become office gossip.I shook his hand off. "This isn't the place," I said coldly.I found a coffee shop nearby. It just so happened to be across the street from the Enforcers' headquarters. The owner was a friend of Marcus's, a retired Alpha from the special forces. It wasn't that I was afraid of Derek. I just didn't want any trouble. The second we walked in, Derek saw the heavily guarded building across the street with the Enforcers' flag flying high. The color drained from his face."I don't think we have anything to talk about," I said, sitting down and getting straight to it. "We br

In the end, on his own parents’ orders, Derek was dragged out by security like a dead dog.As they hauled him away, he pointed a finger at me from across the hall, screaming curses. He called me a liar, a thief, and threatened to report me to the Enforcers and expose me on the werewolf web.I just stood beside Marcus, arms crossed, watching him with a cold stare, as if he were nothing more than a pathetic clown. After that little interruption at the engagement party, it took a while for my parents-in-law to catch their breath. They turned to me, their faces full of apology."Elena, dear, don't listen to a word that worthless creature says. In our hearts, he died a long time ago. Now, you are our only daughter."My daughter ran over and made a little fist, pouting playfully. "Mommy, I'll protect you! If that bad man comes back, I'll get Uncle Marcus to beat him up for you!"Marcus looked at us all, full of regret. "Father, Mother, Elena, this is my fault. I thought since it was just the

In the sixth year of Derek’s disappearance, our family’s luxury goods group went public. As the largest individual shareholder, I became unimaginably wealthy overnight. At the same time, Marcus and I were getting engaged. It was going to be a monumental alliance, a union of two powerful families. He cared for my daughter, and even for Derek’s parents, as if they were his own.The engagement party was a dazzling affair, the hall filled with glamorous guests, their laughter and the clinking of glasses echoing in the air. I was wearing a gown made by elven artisans, covered in diamonds, and holding onto Marcus’s strong arm as we accepted everyone’s blessings. My parents-in-law and my daughter sat at the head table, beaming from ear to ear, their eyes shining with happiness. We had formed a new, perfect family.Just as the ceremony reached its peak, when Marcus and I were about to exchange tokens of our betrothal, the heavy oak doors of the ballroom were thrown open from the outside
