Chapter 4

Autor: Tower Pusher
My cheek hurt from Mom’s slap, but my heart hurt even more.

Back in the winter of eighth grade, Michael accidentally lost his certificate from a speech competition.

He had cried and said that the certificate meant a lot to him.

Brielle and my parents spent all night combing the route he had taken home in the snow.

Later, Brielle convinced the school to issue him a replacement, and Dad called in some favors with the school board to get it officially sealed.

No one had blamed him for not keeping his own certificate safe.

They were acting so differently when it came to me.

I merely asked if Michael did it on purpose, and I ended up with a slap on the face while everyone furiously accused me.

Michael’s eyes glistened with tears. He started sobbing so violently that he almost choked on his own breaths.

“It’s all my fault. I shouldn’t have been a busybody and helped Fin to get his folder. Why did I even bother?

“Now, everyone’s mad because of me...”

The moment Mom saw him sob uncontrollably, she became even more furious.

She grabbed my hand and yanked it toward her own neck.

“Here, Finley. Kill me if that makes you happy.

“With a score like that, you’ve got no right to talk back to Mic. Don’t expect me to pay a single penny for whatever crummy school you end up at.”

Brielle pulled Michael into her arms and patted him on the back.

“It’s not your fault. He should’ve gotten those things by himself anyway.

“That’s on him. Don’t let it get to you.”

Everyone crowded around him and comforted him.

I was clearly the victim, yet everyone was blaming me.

I felt increasingly suffocated by the tension in that space.

Michael only stopped crying when Mom offered to bring him to a fine dining restaurant to eat.

Brielle hooked her arm through his and said, “Come on, let’s not waste our time on that petty jerk. A good meal will make you feel better.”

They ushered him out of the school gate.

I closed my eyes.

At that moment, I felt numb.

Seeing that no one had my back, Noah ended up rounding up every school staff member to help look for my folder.

Eventually, they discovered that Michael had left it sitting on the edge of a flower bed near the gate while he tied his shoe.

A janitor saw it, thought it was trash, and threw it into the trash bin.

I rushed to the back door and threw open all four green plastic dumpsters.

The stench was overwhelming. Without even putting on gloves, I reached in and dug through bag after bag of trash.

My fingers grazed sticky fruit peels, sodden tissues, and mysterious fluids.

At the bottom of the third bin, my fingertips brushed against a stiff manila envelope.

When I pulled it out, the folder was covered in stains, but the name “Finley Ashby” was still legible on the front.

Clutching that filthy folder, I slumped down in exhaustion and slid to the floor beside the trash bin.

At that moment, it finally hit me. No one in this family had ever been there for me.

They never were. They never would be.

But thankfully, I no longer needed them to.

Everyone at the scene fell silent for a moment. No one had expected things to unfold like that.I took a step back and put some distance between us.“Brielle, if you keep this up, I’ll report you to the school and make sure you can’t even finish your studies here.”Just as she was about to say something, two uniformed security guards emerged from the crowd.“Miss, gatherings and disturbances are not allowed here. Please leave immediately.”Brielle was grabbed by the arms and dragged out.She struggled and turned back to call my name, but her voice was drowned out by the murmurs of the crowd.I stood there as the crowd slowly dispersed, leaving the space in a mess. Not far away, only one person remained. It was Grace. She stood with her arms crossed. I had no idea how long she had been there or how much she had overheard. The streetlamp above her cast shifting shadows across her face, alternating between light and dark.I walked over and tried to break the tension with a t

From then on, life became incredibly simple.Grace and I went to class together, ate meals together at the cafeteria, and went back to that little shop together afterward.News of our relationship spread quickly. The aerospace program was small, and the two of us were already pretty noticeable. Before long, the entire cohort knew about us.Some called us the power couple. Others said that Grace hit the jackpot landing a state top scorer as her boyfriend.Naturally, Brielle heard about it.I figured she would be upset, but I never expected her to do something out of line. That evening, I had just said goodbye to Grace at the cafeteria and was walking back to my dorm alone.I looked down at my phone and read what Grace just sent me. [What would you like for breakfast tomorrow? I’ll bring it for you.]Just as I typed a reply and looked up, I was stunned. The front of the dormitory was crowded with people. In the middle of the crowd were red, pink, and white flowers and can

I stood behind the counter with a cold gaze as my fingers gripped the edge of my apron.“Are you here to eat? If not, you’re not welcome here.”Mom started sobbing.Dad stepped forward, quickly pulled a bank card from his pocket, and handed it to me.His palm was sweaty, and his fingers trembled.“Fin, we sold the house. There’s three hundred thousand on this card for you. It’s our way of apologizing for everything we did wrong.”I looked down at the card for a moment, then scoffed.“People are truly strange creatures.”I looked up.“A month ago, you announced in front of everyone that you wouldn’t pay for my college education. Now, you’ve sold the house and say you want to make it up to me.”Mom sobbed, her voice broken and uneven.“That was just me talking nonsense. If I had known you were the state top scorer, I never would have abandoned you—”I cut her off, saying, “So, did you come here looking for your son or looking for the state top scorer?”The air turned tense.

During my free time, I still went to help out at Grace’s family restaurant. In fact, after enrollment, the school had strict rules, and students were not allowed to leave campus freely. However, Willa had somehow found a connection and secured an off-campus pass for Grace and me.At the restaurant, I tied on my apron and wiped down tables. Grace was cooking in the back kitchen. We passed bowls back and forth between us, one handing off and the other receiving. Our movements were smooth and seamless.Willa leaned against the counter, pretending to be tallying accounts, but her eyes kept drifting toward us. She could not hold back the smile at the corners of her mouth. When I walked past her carrying two plates of mango pudding, she finally could not contain herself and let out a chuckle.I set down the plates and turned back to her with curiosity. “Ms. Morris, what are you laughing at?”She winked at me and lowered her voice and replied softly, “Oh, nothing! I’m just happy

I stood there, staring at Brielle, who was standing at the end of the hallway. My mind went blank for a moment.I thought she was supposed to be at Preston Medical University with Michael. How did she end up here? She walked toward me hurriedly.“Fin, after you left, I couldn’t sleep at all. On the day we submitted our applications, I only put down National Service Academy as my only choice. I don’t want to go to Preston Medical University anymore.”I looked at her calmly, as if she were a stranger.“What does that have to do with me?”She froze for a second, then took a step forward.“Fin, we’re still together. I promised you before that I would come here with you. The fact that you’re here right now just proves you still have feelings for me, doesn’t it?”“Brielle.” My voice was steady. “We’ve already broken up. Promises from before don’t count anymore.”I felt Grace looking at me, but she did not interrupt.I paused, looked Brielle in the eyes, and said, “I’m here not bec

After work, I would take a stroll down the street lined with coconut trees. The red-brick pavement was still warm from the sun, and the palm fronds rustled in the evening breeze on both sides. At the end of the road was the sea.I took off my shoes and stepped barefoot into the water.I kicked off my shoes and stepped into the shallows. Cool water curled around my ankles as seagulls traced lazy circles in the sky, their calls drifting out on the wind.I stood there watching the sunset turn the water into a sheet of scattered gold, and it struck me. Chasing a dream alone did not feel lonely at all.Days passed quickly, and it was soon time for orientation.I dragged an old suitcase and stood before the grand entrance of National Service Academy. The unmistakable emblem atop the gate gleamed brilliantly under the sunlight, and the uniformed guards stood ramrod straight.I took a deep breath and was about to walk in when someone called out from behind me.“Fin?”I turned and sa
