Chapter 5

Autor: Tower Pusher
At some point, Noah emerged behind me without me noticing.

She patted my shoulder and said, “Fin, I get it now. I see why you didn’t want your family to know your scores.”

She paused for a moment, then added, “Going to National Service Academy isn’t such a bad thing. Room and board are free, and there’s a scholarship too.

“You’ll be able to manage just fine on your own.”

I nodded, tucked the soiled folder into my jacket, and muttered a quiet “thank you” to her before turning around and heading home.

When I arrived home, the living room was buzzing with more noise than I could stand.

Michael was brimming as he sat in the very center of the couch, completely surrounded by our parents and Brielle.

Brielle said loudly, “Then, it’s settled! We’re leaving for the road trip today!”

Michael spotted me first. He immediately stood up and came over and greeted me warmly.

“Hey, you’re back! I heard from Ms. Carter that you found your folder. You’re not mad anymore, are you?”

He frowned and put on a pitiful look before he continued.

“I’m sorry. We really should’ve stayed and helped you look for the folder. We shouldn’t have just left you like that.”

So, they knew all along. They knew they should not have abandoned me when I was at my lowest.

But it had always been like that.

Whenever I got emotional about something, Michael would throw a little fit, and suddenly everyone’s attention was on him.

Big issues got brushed aside. Small ones vanished completely.

It was as if my emotions did not matter. It was as if ignoring them would magically fix everything.

Skipping over my feelings would make all the problems magically solve themselves.

They assumed I would never walk away. They assumed I would always be right there, living in their shadow.

If I pressed any further, I would be the unreasonable one, the one who would not let things go.

Fortunately, I just had to get through this stretch.

When I remained silent, Brielle reached out to take my hand.

“Alright, alright. You found it, didn’t you? Let’s just let bygones be bygones.”

I murmured a quick hum in affirmation, sidestepped, and pulled my hand back.

She froze for a moment, then closed her fingers around empty air.

“Really? That’s awesome!” Michael gave me a playful punch in the chest.

“You’re the best, Fin!”

He pulled his hand back and said, “Oh, by the way, Bree was trying to cheer me up, so she said she’d take us on a road trip to Southwick.

“She says it’s right by the ocean, with coconut trees everywhere along the roads. You’re coming too, right?!”

Southwick.

Hearing that word made my heart ache.

I turned to Brielle.

Our gazes met.

The warm lamplight illuminated her profile in a soft golden outline.

She had once said she would go to National Service Academy with me, and we would watch the sea together.

Soon, she would head to Preston, and I to Southwick.

After that, we would probably never see each other again.

This trip might be our final goodbye.

“Sure,” I said. “I’ll go pack.”

Rain started pelting the window. It gradually got heavier.

When I came downstairs with my bag, Brielle was already cramming Michael’s suitcase into the last open spot in the back seat.

It wedged in perfectly, square and snug, taking up every last inch of space.

When she was done, her eyes darted between my suitcase and me standing in the rain. She had a troubled expression.

“Fin, there’s way too much luggage. I don’t think we can fit you in.”

The rain was pouring hard, and the wind was howling loudly. I could barely hear what she said.

“Maybe... you could just come next time? It’s not like this is our only opportunity.”

The rear window cracked open just enough for me to see Michael glued to his phone with a smile.

Mom came up from behind me and pulled open the passenger door.

“Seriously? You made your brother cry, and you’re just going to tag along like nothing happened?”

Rainwater trickled down my forehead and into my eyes, stinging with a dull, bitter ache.

So, this was my punishment, then?

First, hand me a little hope, then crush it right in front of my face.

Was it all because I made Michael look bad in front of everyone?

“It’s fine,” I said. My tone was calmer than expected.

“You guys go ahead.”

Before I could say anything more, the car had already pulled away.

The taillights faded into a blur through the rain.

I stood there watching until they disappeared, then turned and headed back.

Rain splashed against my face, but I hardly noticed.

After so many times, my heart had grown number than the cold.

I reached the front door and pulled the handle. It would not budge.

They had locked the door without giving me a key. Or rather, they had simply forgotten I existed.

Everyone at the scene fell silent for a moment. No one had expected things to unfold like that.I took a step back and put some distance between us.“Brielle, if you keep this up, I’ll report you to the school and make sure you can’t even finish your studies here.”Just as she was about to say something, two uniformed security guards emerged from the crowd.“Miss, gatherings and disturbances are not allowed here. Please leave immediately.”Brielle was grabbed by the arms and dragged out.She struggled and turned back to call my name, but her voice was drowned out by the murmurs of the crowd.I stood there as the crowd slowly dispersed, leaving the space in a mess. Not far away, only one person remained. It was Grace. She stood with her arms crossed. I had no idea how long she had been there or how much she had overheard. The streetlamp above her cast shifting shadows across her face, alternating between light and dark.I walked over and tried to break the tension with a t

From then on, life became incredibly simple.Grace and I went to class together, ate meals together at the cafeteria, and went back to that little shop together afterward.News of our relationship spread quickly. The aerospace program was small, and the two of us were already pretty noticeable. Before long, the entire cohort knew about us.Some called us the power couple. Others said that Grace hit the jackpot landing a state top scorer as her boyfriend.Naturally, Brielle heard about it.I figured she would be upset, but I never expected her to do something out of line. That evening, I had just said goodbye to Grace at the cafeteria and was walking back to my dorm alone.I looked down at my phone and read what Grace just sent me. [What would you like for breakfast tomorrow? I’ll bring it for you.]Just as I typed a reply and looked up, I was stunned. The front of the dormitory was crowded with people. In the middle of the crowd were red, pink, and white flowers and can

I stood behind the counter with a cold gaze as my fingers gripped the edge of my apron.“Are you here to eat? If not, you’re not welcome here.”Mom started sobbing.Dad stepped forward, quickly pulled a bank card from his pocket, and handed it to me.His palm was sweaty, and his fingers trembled.“Fin, we sold the house. There’s three hundred thousand on this card for you. It’s our way of apologizing for everything we did wrong.”I looked down at the card for a moment, then scoffed.“People are truly strange creatures.”I looked up.“A month ago, you announced in front of everyone that you wouldn’t pay for my college education. Now, you’ve sold the house and say you want to make it up to me.”Mom sobbed, her voice broken and uneven.“That was just me talking nonsense. If I had known you were the state top scorer, I never would have abandoned you—”I cut her off, saying, “So, did you come here looking for your son or looking for the state top scorer?”The air turned tense.

During my free time, I still went to help out at Grace’s family restaurant. In fact, after enrollment, the school had strict rules, and students were not allowed to leave campus freely. However, Willa had somehow found a connection and secured an off-campus pass for Grace and me.At the restaurant, I tied on my apron and wiped down tables. Grace was cooking in the back kitchen. We passed bowls back and forth between us, one handing off and the other receiving. Our movements were smooth and seamless.Willa leaned against the counter, pretending to be tallying accounts, but her eyes kept drifting toward us. She could not hold back the smile at the corners of her mouth. When I walked past her carrying two plates of mango pudding, she finally could not contain herself and let out a chuckle.I set down the plates and turned back to her with curiosity. “Ms. Morris, what are you laughing at?”She winked at me and lowered her voice and replied softly, “Oh, nothing! I’m just happy

I stood there, staring at Brielle, who was standing at the end of the hallway. My mind went blank for a moment.I thought she was supposed to be at Preston Medical University with Michael. How did she end up here? She walked toward me hurriedly.“Fin, after you left, I couldn’t sleep at all. On the day we submitted our applications, I only put down National Service Academy as my only choice. I don’t want to go to Preston Medical University anymore.”I looked at her calmly, as if she were a stranger.“What does that have to do with me?”She froze for a second, then took a step forward.“Fin, we’re still together. I promised you before that I would come here with you. The fact that you’re here right now just proves you still have feelings for me, doesn’t it?”“Brielle.” My voice was steady. “We’ve already broken up. Promises from before don’t count anymore.”I felt Grace looking at me, but she did not interrupt.I paused, looked Brielle in the eyes, and said, “I’m here not bec

After work, I would take a stroll down the street lined with coconut trees. The red-brick pavement was still warm from the sun, and the palm fronds rustled in the evening breeze on both sides. At the end of the road was the sea.I took off my shoes and stepped barefoot into the water.I kicked off my shoes and stepped into the shallows. Cool water curled around my ankles as seagulls traced lazy circles in the sky, their calls drifting out on the wind.I stood there watching the sunset turn the water into a sheet of scattered gold, and it struck me. Chasing a dream alone did not feel lonely at all.Days passed quickly, and it was soon time for orientation.I dragged an old suitcase and stood before the grand entrance of National Service Academy. The unmistakable emblem atop the gate gleamed brilliantly under the sunlight, and the uniformed guards stood ramrod straight.I took a deep breath and was about to walk in when someone called out from behind me.“Fin?”I turned and sa
