“Miss Wright, the Bennett family is offering you one million dollars as compensation for the divorce. The money is on this card.”
Benjamin Carter said as he handed Elena Wright a bank card on the street,
Elena Wright looked at the card, feeling a mixture of emotions.
Two years ago, following her grandfather’s last will, Elena married Asher Bennett
But Asher had never wanted the marriage, so he never returned home, not even once.
Throughout those two years, Elena had seen her husband only on television.
She had never seen him at home. It seemed like some kind of joke, but it was the absolute truth.
In the end, they decided to get divorced.
Asher had not attended the divorce proceedings, just as he had not attended the wedding proceedings. Instead, he had entrusted Benjamin, the Bennett family’s head butler, with handling everything on his behalf.
Elena looked at the card Benjamin had given her and shook her head.
“Thank you, but I don’t need any compensation.”
She then walked toward the curb and got into a black Bently that was waiting for her.
She had two older brothers: the eldest, Jonathan Blake, and the younger one, Elliot Spencer.
Elena looked at them and laughed.
“It’s just a divorce. Why are you two so worried?”
“Elena, did you really get divorced?”
Elliot, who was driving, turned toward her in disbelief.
Elena raised the divorce papers with a smile.
“Of course. I’m officially divorced.”
Elliot laughed.
“You should have gotten divorced a long time ago. In fact, you two should never have gotten married in the first place.”
Elena shot him a look and quickly said,
“Elliot, focus on driving. I don’t want us to get into an accident. And why are you so happy about this? Divorce isn’t something to celebrate.”
She felt as though Jonathan and Elliot had been eagerly waiting for her divorce.
Elliot nodded.
“Oh, it absolutely deserves to be celebrated.”
Then he glanced at Jonathan, who was sitting in the back seat, and added,
“And I think Jonathan is happy too.”
Jonathan nodded.
“I agree with him. You two never should have gotten married.”
Elena sighed helplessly.
“It was my grandfather’s wish. You both know I couldn’t go against it.”
Silence filled the car for a moment before Elliot said resentfully,
“I don’t know what Grandpa was thinking when he forced you to marry that idiot, Asher. How could he dare ignore you for two whole years?”
If Elena hadn’t stopped him, he would have taught Asher a lesson himself.
Elena, however, remained calm.
“But there was one good thing about it. He never interfered in my life. He never even visited the Bennett residence once. He probably doesn’t even know what I look like.”
It was almost laughable,a married couple who were supposed to be the closest people to each other had not even met once in two years.
But Elena held no resentment in her heart.
She hadn’t wanted the marriage either. She had only agreed to it to fulfill her grandfather’s dying wish, while Asher had been forced into it as well.
Neither of them had been happy.
Elliot spoke again.
“If I had known he was this terrible, I never would have let you marry him.”
Then he added jokingly,
“Grandpa should have married you to someone better... like me. Or Jonathan. We’re both much more reliable than that idiot.”
Elena laughed.
“Come on, who marries their own brother?”
Elliot replied,
“We’re not blood-related.”
Elena rolled her eyes. It was true that Jonathan and Elliot had been adopted by her grandfather, but they had grown up with her since childhood, which was why she considered them her real brothers.
She said firmly,
“Enough, both of you. I only see you as my elder brothers.”
Elliot was only joking, so she didn’t take his words seriously.
However, when he suggested that she marry either of them, Jonathan’s gaze unconsciously shifted toward Elena.
When she made it clear that she saw him only as a brother, the light in his eyes dimmed for a moment before he quickly regained his composure.
It was obvious that Jonathan secretly harbored feelings for Elena.
Yet he had concealed his emotions so skillfully over the years that neither Elliot nor Elena had noticed anything.
Finally, Jonathan spoke in his warm voice.
“Anyway, it all worked out in the end. What are your plans now? You distanced yourself from everyone for the sake of your marriage and disappeared for two years. A lot of people have missed you.”
Elena sighed nostalgically.
“Two years have passed... I wonder if anyone still remembers Dr. Wright.”
Jonathan smiled.
“Of course. You’re one of the most famous neurosurgeons in the world. No matter how long you’ve been gone, no one could possibly forget you.”
Elena smiled, excitement shining in her eyes.
“Then wish me luck, because I’m going back to the operating room.”
Elena didn’t agree with Vivian’s opinion. From her perspective, Asher wasn’t the kind of man who would easily enter into a marriage or a political alliance. If he were, he wouldn’t have resisted his family’s arrangements for all those years. Moreover, based on the few moments when she had seen Asher interact with Nora, there seemed to be genuine feelings between them.Elena couldn’t help but remember the rumors surrounding Nora. She had always been famous for her beauty and elegance, and she came from a prestigious family.Perhaps Asher’s near-marriage to her hadn’t been merely a political arrangement.Perhaps it had also been the result of genuine feelings between them. But whether those feelings had been true love or not was something only Asher himself knew.Of course, there was no need for Elena to say any of this to Vivian.Everything she was thinking was nothing more than speculation.Their conversation ended as the banquet officially began.Harold had already arrived in the hal
Elena was warning him.Although their relationship seemed good at the moment, she wouldn’t tolerate it if he crossed her boundaries.Kevin nodded with a smile, then leaned closer and whispered softly near her ear,“Don’t worry… I know where to draw the line.”In truth, he was only deliberately trying to make Asher uncomfortable. He had no intention of actually acting recklessly.Elena, however, wasn’t comfortable with how close he was.She shot him a sharp look before turning around and walking toward a quiet corner where there were fewer people, hoping to rest for a while.“Ena.”Vivian approached her with a glass of champagne and handed it to her.Elena nodded gratefully and asked,“Where are your parents?”Vivian pointed toward the other side of the hall and pursed her lips.“Over there… It looks like they’re discussing a potential collaboration with some people.”It was obvious from her expression that she didn’t like seeing them do this.Elena smiled calmly.“For the Bennett fami
The car moved slowly, and after a period of silence, Kevin finally broke it.“You know your kidnapping was connected to James, right?”Elena nodded and looked at him in surprise.“Yes.”Kevin gave a soft chuckle before asking casually,“And are you just going to let it go?”Elena raised an eyebrow but didn’t answer, waiting for him to continue.Kevin said,“The Foster family has deep influence in Silverton City, and it will be difficult to uproot them with Jonathan alone.”Elena smiled as though she already knew what he was getting at.“And?”He answered directly,“I can help you.”Elena laughed lightly and stared at him for a moment before turning her gaze away.“Help me? Hasn’t the Foster family been your target from the beginning? Isn’t what you really want to do is swallow them up and strengthen your influence?”There’s only one pie.If one person gets a bigger slice, someone else has to settle for a smaller one.How could she possibly not understand Kevin’s intentions?Kevin smil
“Did she really grow up in the countryside?”Whether it was Dr. Wright, the famous doctor, or Mr. Mikhail’s student, that alone was enough to prove one thing.Elena was anything but an ordinary person.Harold was confused by Asher’s words and asked,“What do you mean?”Asher saw no point in hiding it, so he told his grandfather Elena’s true identity. In any case, Harold would discover the truth after tonight’s banquet, so it was better for him to know beforehand and be prepared. But Harold’s reaction was completely different from what Asher had expected.Instead of being shocked, a serious expression appeared on his face, as though he had fallen deep into thought. After a long silence, he said slowly,“Elena… she was destined to become an extraordinary person.”So… that old man hadn’t been lying to him.The blood flowing through Elena’s veins was enough to make her extraordinary. The members of that family had always possessed exceptional talents.Asher looked at him.“Grandpa… I feel
Elena and Jonathan spoke on the phone for quite some time, discussing the Foster family’s weaknesses before finally ending the call.In the blink of an eye, it was already four in the afternoon. There were only two hours left before it was time to head to the birthday banquet.Elena rose from the sofa and headed to the dressing room to do her makeup and get ready.Harold’s birthday banquet was being held that evening at the luxurious Crown stone Hotel in Silverton City. The Bennett family had spared no expense, reserving the entire hotel for the occasion. As the actual host of the banquet, Asher had arrived at the hotel early to make sure everything was going smoothly. It was his grandfather’s seventieth birthday, so he was determined to oversee every detail. When Benjamin saw how busy he had been all day, he said,“Mr. Bennett, you should get some rest. I’ll take care of everything here.”But Asher didn’t leave. Instead, he asked,“Where’s Grandpa?”Benjamin replied,“Mr. Harold Benn
Asher didn’t say anything, but the dark expression on his face was enough to reveal what was going through his mind.Knowing Elena as he did, he was certain that she would agree. She might even take the initiative herself.Kevin waved at him with a smile.“See you tonight, Mr. Bennett. And I hope you won’t tell the Foster family about what I said.”Then he got into his gleaming red sports car and drove away.Asher watched the car until it disappeared from sight, his gaze growing colder. He raised his head and looked toward the floor where Elena lived before turning around and leaving.Meanwhile, Elena slept until noon, making up for some of the sleeplessness she had suffered the night before. She got out of bed and, as usual, picked up her phone to check her messages.Vivian had sent her a message reminding her that Harold’s birthday banquet was tonight and asking whether she would attend.Elena replied before moving on to the rest of her messages. She also found a message from Lucy,
