Chapter 2

作者: Vanilla Dog
Jase shook out the crumpled paper in his hand and looked at the title. His eyes widened immediately.

"A heart-swap transplant agreement?"

The words seemed to stir something in his memory.

I staggered to my feet, trying to snatch it back. He couldn't find out the truth.

But he gave a scornful laugh and shoved me away. My back slammed hard against the wall, and I slid to the floor.

"A heart-swap agreement?" He pinched the edge of the paper as though it were something filthy. "So, Audrey, you're broke now, but your appetite has only grown.

"You can't even come up with a hundred thousand dollars, yet you're still trying to squeeze money out of someone who's even poorer than you?"

He folded the agreement slowly, then tore it to pieces. "You're absolutely disgusting."

It felt as though a blade had plunged straight into my heart, but all I could do was remain silent.

I was the one who had pushed him into the abyss of hatred. Every ounce of pain I felt now was my own fault.

The private room door swung open, and a knife-sharp gust of cold air swept inside. Dressed too lightly for the weather, I couldn't stop shivering.

"Jase, I'm here."

When Jase saw Brielle, a smile appeared on his face.

"Brielle, are you cold?" The tenderness in his voice was a warmth I no longer recognized.

He opened his coat and wrapped her in his arms.

The sight made my eyes burn. Once, that same careful tenderness had belonged to me.

Back then, Jase had been a poor college student I'd sponsored. He'd been young and awkward, reserved and stubborn.

The first time he came to my mansion, he seemed so afraid of owing anyone anything that he spent the entire day cleaning with his head down.

When my stomach hurt, he stayed up all night tending a pot of soup, then clumsily filled a hot-water flask for me.

When I worked late at my desk, he had sat quietly beside me until I finally looked up and met his astonishingly bright eyes.

Under the flickering lamplight, his ears had turned red, but his voice was firm. "Once I'm capable of taking care of you, I'll handle all the hard work, Audrey."

"Who is that, Jase?" Brielle glanced at me, who was huddled on the floor and shivering in the cold.

Jase didn't even look in my direction. "Just some bar girl. If you don't like having her around, we can have her thrown out."

Brielle suddenly smiled at me. "So you're Audrey. Back then, Jase was still young and naive. You took care of him, and we're grateful for that. Even though you were a gold digger who cheated on him and had no morals, you did help us once.

"And if you hadn't been so blind, I might never have met Jase."

I dug my fingernails into my palm, using the pain to suppress the bitterness rising inside me as I listened to the mockery in her voice.

How did she know so much about our past? Who had spent countless nights tearing those memories open for her, over and over again?

Had he told her the truth without a second thought, or had he spoken out of resentment he could never let go of?

All these years, I'd been like moss growing in the dark, silently watching him from afar.

I'd watched him make a name for himself. I'd watched him grow more mature. I'd watched someone else take her place at his side.

Now, at last, I was approaching the end of my life. Only then had I dared to gather the courage to come back into his world.

Seeing me sit there in silence, Jase suddenly grew irritated. "Enough. Why bring up things that happened years ago? Let's go."

He took Brielle's hand and walked past me without a trace of expression.

His leather shoe rolled over my hand, but my body could no longer even register the pain.

I watched him walk away. My heart pounded harder and harder, and it felt as though my insides were twisting into knots.

A sweet, metallic taste rose in my throat.

Behind him, I coughed up a mouthful of blood.

Beneath the gentle midday sunlight, I lay on the spacious bed in the mansion, watching the news on television."Brielle Carter has been sentenced to life imprisonment for first-degree murder," the newsreader announced."What a familiar name. Do I know her?"The man beside me heard my voice and gently stroked my head. "Who knows? Whatever the case, she's no longer part of your life."I tilted my head up and smiled at him. "Honey, I want steak. Go make me some."He answered indulgently, "All right, I'm on it, you little foodie."I couldn't remember my past. All I knew was that I'd once been on the brink of death, and that Clark Whitaker was now the person who loved me most in the world. When I woke after surgery, he told me he'd found me lying by the side of the road. I had been barely alive, my heartbeat almost gone. He took me to the hospital and saved my life.He took meticulous care of every aspect of my daily life, and I gradually lost myself in his tenderness. In time, we

After returning home, Jase made a phone call."Investigate everything that happened in the past. Spare no expense. Mobilize every resource at your disposal to get to the bottom of it."Just then, Brielle walked through the front door, carrying bags upon bags of luxury goods and humming a tune to herself."Jase, I've picked out lots of things for our wedding preparations."Jase looked up at her, his eyes filled with nothing but icy coldness. "Brielle, answer me. Did you know all along that Audrey was the one who gave me her heart?"At the question, Brielle froze in place. She let out an awkward laugh, desperately trying to maintain her composure. "What are you talking about? Audrey is nothing but a selfish, money-grubbing woman. How could she possibly have gone that far for you?"I'm the one who truly loves you. I'm the one who could give you my heart.""Is that so?" Seeing how tense Brielle had become, Jase already knew the answer. "Were all those things you said about Audrey li

Jase looked at the doctor. "Audrey left something for me?"The doctor held out a small box and placed it in Jase's hands. "Yes."Inside was a small wooden amulet bearing a single carved initial.Jase took it out and gently traced the carved initial with his fingers. Memories came crashing over him like a tidal wave, sweeping him away.It was the only keepsake his parents had left him. It was an ordinary-looking protective amulet, yet it carried more emotion than words could express. His parents, whom he'd never had the chance to meet, had made it from a piece of century-old wood. According to the story, they'd sealed it with their own blood and spent weeks praying over it, believing it would protect him from harm."When you meet someone you can entrust your entire life to, someone you can spend your whole life with and trust completely, give it to that person."Back then, under the pretext of giving her a birthday present, he'd stood on tiptoe and secretly slipped it around Audr

Numb with unease, Jase stared at the man standing before him. He rubbed his fingers restlessly. "What happened? Is something wrong?"The other person hesitated before choosing their words carefully. "It's nothing much. After you shoved Audrey, she grabbed me and went a little crazy. She asked me to pass along a few things to you.""What did she say? Tell me!" Jase demanded, his breathing growing ragged, his eyes bloodshot."She said it's getting cold, so you should dress warmly. And if someone bullies you, you need to fight back. And...""And what? Just tell me!""She also said she was sorry."The cigarette slipped from Jase's fingers and fell to the ground. He felt as though he'd been struck by lightning. Those childish words, the sort of thing someone might say to comfort a little boy, were the very words he'd heard most often from Audrey in the past. She used to cup his face in her hands and tell him with a smile, "Don't worry about getting me into trouble. Your safety is w

Third-Person POVSitting on a hospital bench, Jase suddenly remembered the look Audrey had given him when he'd stood by and watched Brielle force her to drink. Her eyes had been filled with despair and anguish, yet there had also been an inexplicable sense of relief, almost as though she'd finally been set free.He couldn't understand what kind of state of mind could make someone look at another person that way.An inexplicable ache wound through his chest. His heart felt as though it were being squeezed, making it difficult to breathe. He got to his feet, overwhelmed by the feeling that he'd lost something important. After the doctor confirmed that Brielle was fine, he found himself inexplicably wanting to call Audrey.Maybe he'd gone too far. After all, he'd only agreed to be with Brielle because she resembled Audrey so much.Brielle had been his junior at college. Back then, before Audrey had driven him away, Brielle had already been pursuing him.Throughout that time, Jase

A few days later, I arrived at the engagement party. To my surprise, it was being held at the mansion I'd once called home.I stopped just outside the entrance. My heart clenched as though an invisible hand had closed around it.'Jase, was even the little we had shared in the past not worth keeping anymore?'The mansion's courtyard was packed with guests and lavishly decorated.Brielle stood beside Jase in an extravagant outfit.Behind them rose a towering six-tier cake. In front of them sat mountains of gifts. The ill-fitting server's uniform barely stayed on my body, its coarse fabric chafing my skin raw. I kept my head down, my hands trembling slightly as I struggled to carry the heavy tray.Don't look up. Don't look.I was afraid that even a glance might disturb the happiness I'd worked so hard to give them, a happiness I could never touch again.Brielle wrapped her arms around Jase's neck, excitedly talking about how they would grow old together.Jase turned his face tow
