Chapter 3

作者: Vanilla Dog
Jase stopped in his tracks and turned to look at me. His brow furrowed at the pool of blood on the floor. A flicker of concern crossed his face.

"What happened? Audrey, you've been living on your own all this time, and you can't even take care of yourself?"

Before I could answer, Brielle chimed in with a sweet smile, "I heard Audrey's been involved with hospitals for years. Sometimes she even sells her blood. Could she have caught some nasty disease?

"I already knew you weren't exactly virtuous, but I'm surprised you'd sink this low just for money."

I opened my mouth, but I couldn't refute her accusations.

I'd been dealing with hospitals all these years because I needed to keep track of Jase's condition after the heart-swap procedure.

I'd sold my blood only because, after going bankrupt, I had no other way to afford my medication.

But how could I tell him that?

He was such a fool. Even now, when he hated me with every fiber of his being, the truth would still break his heart.

My voice was so hoarse I could barely hear myself. I muttered the words as though I were confessing to a sin, "Yes. The place where I sold my blood didn't follow proper procedures. I caught a disease."

The concern that had flashed across Jase's face vanished in an instant, replaced by shock and disgust.

He clenched his fists. His words came through gritted teeth. "Audrey, you keep finding new ways to show me just how low you'll sink. Do you really want to take all that money with you to the grave?"

Brielle sighed. "Jase, we can't just stand by and let someone die. Since she once helped you, we should at least do something for her."

She turned to me, a hint of mockery in her eyes. "Our engagement party is in a few days. Since you're apparently doing such a good job as a bartender, why don't you come help out?"

She tugged at Jase's sleeve and spoke in a syrupy voice, "Come on, Jase. Please?"

He snorted and strode forward. "Whatever."

After they left, I dragged myself to the hospital.

The doctor looked at me with pity.

"Your body has developed a resistance to the medication. Ms. Bennett, unless a miracle happens, I'm afraid you won't survive more than a few days."

I stared at the hospital's pale ceiling and nodded. "I know."

Hadn't selling my blood to pay for the medication been my only way to hold on until this day?

I'd waited to watch him grow, reach the point of getting engaged, and have the chance to live a happy, peaceful life. That was enough.

"Spend the next few days saying goodbye to your family," the doctor advised.

I gave a bitter smile. "Doctor, I'm an orphan. I have only one person left in my life, and I've turned him into my enemy. After I die, please give these things to Professor Jase Prescott at Stonebridge University."

I'd once believed life was nothing more than a game of chasing money. It wasn't until I met him that I felt as though I'd truly lived.

No one had ever taught me how to love, so I'd taken it upon myself to love him the only way I knew how.

I'd spent every last cent of my fortune. I had no regrets.

Sometimes, though, I found myself thinking how fortunate I was.

How fortunate that I had money as well as love. Money, as it turned out, was enough to buy his life back.

A businesswoman who'd spent the first half of her life chasing wealth could still be treated with tenderness. Yet when she finally decided to live for someone else, she was condemned for being obsessed with money.

The doctor took the things I'd brought him. "He'll forgive you."

I shook my head and looked out the window. "Forgive me? No. I want him to hate me for the rest of his life."

Just then, my phone rang with a breaking local news alert.

The photo showed Jase in a suit, shopping for wedding dresses with Brielle. She leaned against him. Together, they made a striking couple, the kind everyone envied.

The headline read: "Stonebridge University Professor Jase Prescott Set to Marry, Enjoys Romantic Outing with Fiancee."

I calmly closed the notification and swallowed my last dose of the medication.

Beneath the gentle midday sunlight, I lay on the spacious bed in the mansion, watching the news on television."Brielle Carter has been sentenced to life imprisonment for first-degree murder," the newsreader announced."What a familiar name. Do I know her?"The man beside me heard my voice and gently stroked my head. "Who knows? Whatever the case, she's no longer part of your life."I tilted my head up and smiled at him. "Honey, I want steak. Go make me some."He answered indulgently, "All right, I'm on it, you little foodie."I couldn't remember my past. All I knew was that I'd once been on the brink of death, and that Clark Whitaker was now the person who loved me most in the world. When I woke after surgery, he told me he'd found me lying by the side of the road. I had been barely alive, my heartbeat almost gone. He took me to the hospital and saved my life.He took meticulous care of every aspect of my daily life, and I gradually lost myself in his tenderness. In time, we

After returning home, Jase made a phone call."Investigate everything that happened in the past. Spare no expense. Mobilize every resource at your disposal to get to the bottom of it."Just then, Brielle walked through the front door, carrying bags upon bags of luxury goods and humming a tune to herself."Jase, I've picked out lots of things for our wedding preparations."Jase looked up at her, his eyes filled with nothing but icy coldness. "Brielle, answer me. Did you know all along that Audrey was the one who gave me her heart?"At the question, Brielle froze in place. She let out an awkward laugh, desperately trying to maintain her composure. "What are you talking about? Audrey is nothing but a selfish, money-grubbing woman. How could she possibly have gone that far for you?"I'm the one who truly loves you. I'm the one who could give you my heart.""Is that so?" Seeing how tense Brielle had become, Jase already knew the answer. "Were all those things you said about Audrey li

Jase looked at the doctor. "Audrey left something for me?"The doctor held out a small box and placed it in Jase's hands. "Yes."Inside was a small wooden amulet bearing a single carved initial.Jase took it out and gently traced the carved initial with his fingers. Memories came crashing over him like a tidal wave, sweeping him away.It was the only keepsake his parents had left him. It was an ordinary-looking protective amulet, yet it carried more emotion than words could express. His parents, whom he'd never had the chance to meet, had made it from a piece of century-old wood. According to the story, they'd sealed it with their own blood and spent weeks praying over it, believing it would protect him from harm."When you meet someone you can entrust your entire life to, someone you can spend your whole life with and trust completely, give it to that person."Back then, under the pretext of giving her a birthday present, he'd stood on tiptoe and secretly slipped it around Audr

Numb with unease, Jase stared at the man standing before him. He rubbed his fingers restlessly. "What happened? Is something wrong?"The other person hesitated before choosing their words carefully. "It's nothing much. After you shoved Audrey, she grabbed me and went a little crazy. She asked me to pass along a few things to you.""What did she say? Tell me!" Jase demanded, his breathing growing ragged, his eyes bloodshot."She said it's getting cold, so you should dress warmly. And if someone bullies you, you need to fight back. And...""And what? Just tell me!""She also said she was sorry."The cigarette slipped from Jase's fingers and fell to the ground. He felt as though he'd been struck by lightning. Those childish words, the sort of thing someone might say to comfort a little boy, were the very words he'd heard most often from Audrey in the past. She used to cup his face in her hands and tell him with a smile, "Don't worry about getting me into trouble. Your safety is w

Third-Person POVSitting on a hospital bench, Jase suddenly remembered the look Audrey had given him when he'd stood by and watched Brielle force her to drink. Her eyes had been filled with despair and anguish, yet there had also been an inexplicable sense of relief, almost as though she'd finally been set free.He couldn't understand what kind of state of mind could make someone look at another person that way.An inexplicable ache wound through his chest. His heart felt as though it were being squeezed, making it difficult to breathe. He got to his feet, overwhelmed by the feeling that he'd lost something important. After the doctor confirmed that Brielle was fine, he found himself inexplicably wanting to call Audrey.Maybe he'd gone too far. After all, he'd only agreed to be with Brielle because she resembled Audrey so much.Brielle had been his junior at college. Back then, before Audrey had driven him away, Brielle had already been pursuing him.Throughout that time, Jase

A few days later, I arrived at the engagement party. To my surprise, it was being held at the mansion I'd once called home.I stopped just outside the entrance. My heart clenched as though an invisible hand had closed around it.'Jase, was even the little we had shared in the past not worth keeping anymore?'The mansion's courtyard was packed with guests and lavishly decorated.Brielle stood beside Jase in an extravagant outfit.Behind them rose a towering six-tier cake. In front of them sat mountains of gifts. The ill-fitting server's uniform barely stayed on my body, its coarse fabric chafing my skin raw. I kept my head down, my hands trembling slightly as I struggled to carry the heavy tray.Don't look up. Don't look.I was afraid that even a glance might disturb the happiness I'd worked so hard to give them, a happiness I could never touch again.Brielle wrapped her arms around Jase's neck, excitedly talking about how they would grow old together.Jase turned his face tow
