Chapter 1

Author: Cece West
I never thought that my mafia Don husband, Alfonso Castagna, would return home earlier than expected.

According to my plan, I would have already left for medical school far away by the time he came home, and all I would have left for him would just be a divorce agreement.

However, his sudden appearance threw a wrench in my plans.

Still, perhaps this was for the best. Perhaps I could just settle some things ahead of time.

I slipped the divorce agreement in with my prenatal check-up letter, hoping to distract him. I then went up to him and asked, "So, did everything go smoothly for you?"

"The Soldata sent to the outpost was capable enough. They handled a lot of the trouble on my behalf."

I nodded, remaining silent afterward, but he didn't mind. He just leaned back comfortably against the armchair, a subconscious smile playing across his rugged features.

He didn't even need to say her name out loud for me to know whom he was thinking of.

Bianca Parisi—the woman who completely destroyed my life.

Ever since she appeared in my life, Alfonso's view of me had shifted completely. He now thought of me as a hysterical madwoman instead of the kind and gentle wife I had been in the past.

Bianca used to be a drifter from Westlake, running away from her enemies. While I was out, I happened to see her being hunted down, and I stepped in to save her.

When she learned that I was Alfonso's wife, she begged me to take her to see him.

Alfonso was cold to her when he first met Bianca. After she left, he said to me with a sigh, "Debora, you're too kind to everyone. But not everyone is worth saving."

Alfonso was stern and ruthless, treating everyone but me with indifference. Back then, I wasn't the Donna he knew now who constantly fought with him over another woman in our lives.

Before meeting him, I had already been accepted into medical school and was supposed to leave Newland City to complete my residency.

However, Alfonso later took over the Famiglia business. He faced a series of assassination attempts, so I gave up medical school and chose to stay by his side, tending to his wounds and managing the Famiglia affairs.

That was how I gradually transformed into the Donna everyone knew.

At that time, I never thought of it as a sacrifice. I had sincerely believed that I was choosing a life that we would share together. And as a woman, I simply couldn't bear to see anything terrible happen to Bianca.

I tiptoed and pecked him on the cheek, pleading with him. "Just for my sake, please? Won't you help her?"

Alfonso wrapped his arms around my waist and deepened the kiss, his towering frame engulfing me completely. Ultimately, he held me in his arms, feeling absolutely content, and agreed to help Bianca.

Once I confirmed that Bianca had secured a job and was living a safe, stable life, I relaxed and stopped paying attention to her.

However, I ran into her again one year later.

Alfonso was targeted in a second assassination attempt, and Bianca appeared out of the blue and took a bullet meant to kill him.

The bullet tore through her abdomen, and she was rushed to the emergency room at once, suffering from extreme blood loss.

I instinctively clutched my own stomach, remembering the time when I had also taken a bullet for him.

He had been critically injured and remained unconscious for two whole days back then.

After taking the bullet for him, I asked the doctors and Soldato to keep it a secret from him.

He had just solidified his position as the Don, and I knew that if he found out who had hurt me, he would have stopped at nothing until the enemies were all slaughtered.

So, until now, he still didn't know that I once took a bullet for him in the past.

Alfonso stood outside the emergency room, silently staring at the red light above the doors.

I held his hand in mine and comforted him, saying, "Don't worry too much. A gunshot wound in that area isn't necessarily fatal. I—"

However, my attempt to comfort him backfired. He shot me a furious look, filled with authority and disappointment.

"Debora Volpato! Bianca just saved my life, and yet, you speak of the incident with such detachment. Is this how the Donna should be acting?"

I was stunned, completely caught off guard by his sudden furious attitude that I'd never seen before. I didn't even manage to finish my sentence, "...I was shot in that exact spot and still survived without a hitch."

That was the start of the end of our relationship.

But at that time, I simply hadn't realized it. I still thought that Alfonso had only lost his composure because of the shock of the incident.

He asked to see me once last time, but Leo had only just fallen asleep, and I didn't want the noise of my getting up to disturb him. After that, Alfonso vanished. Nobody knew where he went. I only heard that he'd done everything in his power to protect Leo and me before he stepped down, drawing a clear line between us and the Famiglia's infighting.I felt nothing about it. I simply continued my studies as planned and eventually became a surgeon. At times, Leo would ask me about his father, and I would answer him truthfully.Five years later, while volunteering with a medical team providing free aid to the n

I sat in the living room and brought out a new agreement before handing it to Alfonso. I then said calmly and reasonably, "You should have already found out the reason for my gunshot wound."When Bianca took a bullet for you, you gave her love and power. So, what are you planning to give me now that you know that I also took a bullet for you?"Alfonso had a pained and desperate expression on his face. He crouched over next to me and rested his forehead in my lap, begging me to stop talking."I can give you everything. Love, power, and even my life. I'll give you whatever you want. I just don't want you to leave me."Debora, I'll admit that I was moved by Bianca in the past, but I swear that I've never stopped loving you. You're the only one who can be my wife and my Donna…"He soon broke down in tears.I looked at him, but my emotions didn't stir at all. From the moment he began lying to me and chose Bianca over me in the past, I had already expected us to end up like this."I

I pulled my hand away from Alfonso's grip and rested it against my belly instead, saying nothing.I had kept the truth from him back then because I loved him and didn't want him to put himself in danger for my sake. But if I were to explain it to him now, it would only prolong our entanglement more. And, at this point, it was pointless.Since he wasn't able to get the truth from me, he went straight back to the Famiglia estate that night.I didn't know if he just wanted to get to the bottom of the matter or if he had simply thought of Bianca, the other woman who'd also taken a bullet for him. After all, this was the deepest wound that she had inflicted on our relationship. I simply couldn't trust him again. Before he came back, I was soon wheeled into the delivery room. And just as the doctor predicted, the scar tissue ruptured during the labor process.Blood kept spilling from my body, and I felt the chill creeping into me.Amidst the doctors' urgent shouts, I opened my eyes

The next time I met Alfonso again was four months later. That day, I had just finished a medical training session and was walking out of the classroom building with my neatly organized stack of notes in my hand. Then I spotted an extremely familiar black sedan parked in the parking lot.The window rolled down, revealing Alfonso's tense face.He looked far more haggard than when I'd left. His eyes were deeply sunken, and his gaze was fixed on me.I pretended not to see him and kept walking toward the bus stop without breaking my stride. He quickly pushed open the car door and stepped out, reaching out to grab my wrist."Debora, come home with me."I dodged his hand and said in a flat yet firm tone, "We're divorced. I'm not going back with you."His hand froze mid-air. I could see the emotions churning in his eyes before he finally looked at me with a resigned expression. He sighed as if he was dealing with an unreasonable child."I promise never to let Bianca appear before y

Alfonso's expression froze. Then, he let out a cold, mocking laugh."There's no need for tactics like this just to get my attention, Debora. No one would ever help you get a divorce behind my back without my permission."Now stop the nonsense and come back inside. You are carrying my heir. You cannot bear to divorce me for real."His deep, dark eyes fixed on mine. They used to be filled with affection for me, but now, there was nothing but threat.I knew that there was no point trying to talk to him anymore. So, I dragged out my suitcase with me and continued walking out.Alma hurried up to stop me, but Alfonso didn't move a muscle. He stopped Alma and said, "Let her go. Once she's suffered enough out there, she'll come back crawling to me and do exactly as she's told."Someone asked what he'd do if I never returned. He just scoffed and said, "Mark my words, she will come back eventually."He was certain that I was a nobody without the Castagna Famiglia, and that there would b

Alfonso soon hurried up after me.He scrutinized my expression, searching for some emotion on my face."How was the prenatal checkup?" he asked. This was the first time he had ever asked about the baby since finding out about my pregnancy."It was fine."It would probably be even better if I could stay as far away as possible from him and Bianca.Alfonso wore an "I knew it" expression on his face as he said, "Bianca was right all along. You really were just faking your pain and illness just to get my attention. "You looked so in pain yesterday that you nearly had me fooled. I thought something had indeed gone wrong with the baby."You're now pregnant with my heir. You should stop joking around with your health like that. If anything actually went wrong, I swear that you'll never be able to handle the consequences."I had no intention of continuing this conversation with him and just nodded in acknowledgment."I know that Bianca needs your company more. I won't trouble you wi
