Chapter 1

An emotional crowd blocked the road ahead of me, hurling all kinds of garbage in my direction.

Camera flashes went off incessantly as various media outlets scrambled to capture my disheveled state.

"Kathleen Wilcox, your adoptive parents spent so much energy and money raising you, yet you killed their biological son? You're a demon!"

"What kind of ungrateful jerk does something like this? How can you live with yourself after doing something like this?"

I remained expressionless, kept my head down, and made no response.

Meanwhile, my adoptive parents, Roger Wilcox and Amber Cohen, squeezed through the crowd, leaning on each other. In just three short days, their hair had become streaked with gray.

"Kathleen, Douglas suffered from illness for over 20 years and finally had a chance to recover. Why did you have to kill him? You wanted to study medicine and go abroad, and we drained every penny we had to put you through school. What did we ever do to deserve this from you?"

Dad steadied Mom with one hand while pointing a trembling finger at me with the other.

"Kathleen, I truly regret adopting you! I should've let you rot in the orphanage, you ungrateful murderer!"

The grief-stricken and furious state of the elderly couple enraged the onlooking crowd.

"What more is there to investigate? Just take her and have her shot!"

"See, this is why you shouldn't casually adopt kids. Maybe Kathleen's birth parents were murderers too, and she was born evil."

"She must be punished for such a horrific case of medical malpractice. Otherwise, how can anyone ever trust a doctor again?"

"Mr. and Mrs. Wilcox, we will definitely seek justice for you!"

Justice?

Did Mom and Dad even deserve it?

I suddenly raised my head and glared viciously at them.

"Douglas deserved to die! I only wished his life had been even shorter! I couldn't wait for him to drop dead sooner!"

Everyone present gasped sharply.

Mom was so furious that her eyes rolled back and she fainted in Dad's arms.

Someone picked up a stone and hurled it at my head.

"Go to hell, you evil murderer!"

Blood trickled down my forehead, and yet I laughed.

My reaction completely infuriated the crowd.

Just as the situation was about to spiral out of control, the police got the crowd under control and escorted me toward the police car.

The moment I was about to get into the police car, a journalist suddenly rushed toward me, holding out her microphone.

"According to investigations, you've saved over 100 heart disease patients and actively participated in medical charity events over the past five years. Kathleen, are there some circumstances behind this case of medical malpractice that you can't speak about perhaps?"

I recognized her as Maureen Ingram. She never published a story without investigating it personally. Her relentless pursuit of truth and justice had earned her a reputation as the most ethical journalist in the field.

She was also the only member of the media present who never hurled abuse at me.

I stared at the camera lens beside her and leaned closer to the microphone.

"Ms. Ingram, let me tell you a secret—the real murderer is someone else. The truth and evidence you want to find are all in the live stream."

I patted Christy on the shoulder and picked up where she left off."I thought my adoptive parents had finally grown a conscience and that was why they spent so much money putting me through medical school. I never imagined it was all for Douglas!"They used Christy's and my freedom as bargaining chips. If I agreed to perform Douglas' surgery, we could take Lana and leave them for good. But halfway through the operation, I got a call from Christy."She told me the truth about the car accident. So, I walked out of that surgery to go find her. What I didn't know was that my adoptive parents had already taken Christy away."Maureen stepped forward and handed us tissues."When Kathleen told me to look for the truth in the live stream recording, I also noticed something strange about that phone call. I got our tech team to run a lip-reading analysis, and that trail led me straight to the news of Christy's accident."But it wasn't until today, when Christy regained consciousness, that I

Everyone froze on the spot when they saw a woman who looked identical to me sitting in a wheelchair. The newcomer was none other than Christy. Her expression was furious, her eyes bloodshot, and her voice choked with suppressed rage and pain."Amber, Roger, did you really think you could threaten Kathleen by locking me up? You deliberately caused that car accident to kill Lana so you could openly take her heart and save that bastard Douglas! You are the real murderers here!"Mom collapsed to the ground in fright, trembling so violently that she couldn't utter a word.Dad stared at Christy in utter horror."How did you get here? We clearly already dr—"Christy cut Dad off with a cold laugh. "Drugged me? You wanted to kill me, right? Too bad you won't get your way this time. I'm going to report you both for Lana's premeditated murder, illegally imprisoning me, and trying to kill me. And Douglas—he drugged and raped me 12 years ago."Pale-faced, Dad and Mom scrambled up and tried t

"The person in the photo is my twin sister, Christy Dyer, and that little girl is her daughter with Douglas. My adoptive parents knew from the very beginning that Lana was the heart donor because—"Mom suddenly rushed over and slapped me in the face, cutting me off."Kathleen, you'd better think carefully before you speak. What twin sister? This little girl is clearly a bastard you gave birth to after fooling around with a thug! Douglas is already dead because of you—why do you have to destroy his reputation too?"I wiped the blood from the corner of my lips and looked coldly at Mom."Christy and I were sent to the orphanage together back then. If you all don't believe me, you can go to the orphanage and ask the director, Kent Sharp."Mom let out a cold laugh."Kathleen, everyone here is busy. No one has time for your nonsense. Who would go so far out of their way to that godforsaken orphanage with you?"However, the reporters present weren't about to let a story slip away. The

Dad took a deep breath, as if making some weighty decision."The little girl in the photo is indeed Kathleen's daughter. While she was still in school, Kathleen got involved with a thug, became pregnant by accident, and insisted on giving birth."We refused to admit it before because we wanted to protect Kathleen's reputation. For a girl, this sort of thing is hardly honorable. But we truly didn't know that the little girl was Douglas' heart donor."Mom caught on and immediately picked up the threat."That's right. We lost Douglas, and yes, we did hate Kathleen for it. But once we learned the truth, we understood why she did what she did and chose to forgive her. What we didn't expect was that she would come to hate us for it instead."Just as everyone thought this was the truth, Maureen suddenly shook her head."The woman in the video isn't Kathleen, and neither is the woman in the photo."Mom's crying stopped instantly, and a barely imperceptible tremor crept into her voice.

Maureen picked up the photo that Mom had thrown to the ground and held it high for everyone to see."Take a close look at this photo. Does this little girl in it look familiar to anyone?"The reporter standing at the very front suddenly covered her mouth and gasped."This little girl looks a lot like Kathleen. Could they be relatives?"Another reporter frowned deeply."But I think this little girl also resembles Douglas. Especially her nose and mouth—they're practically identical to Douglas'."One of the fellow patients staggered up to the photo, a flash of terror crossing his face."I remember now! Douglas had a photo of this girl on his phone! He told me back then that she was his daughter, but I thought he was joking."At this, a bold speculation surged through everyone's minds."So, this little girl is Kathleen and Douglas' daughter?""This girl is already quite grown up. Wouldn't Kathleen and Douglas have still been students back when they had her?""If our speculation

Maureen pulled a photograph out of her pocket."I found this photo among the belongings of the heart donor. Kathleen, you know Lana Dyer, this little girl in the photo, don't you?"In the photo, Lana and I stood hand in hand at the entrance of an amusement park, smiling blissfully. The various media outlets all turned their cameras on that photo. The crowd, which had been seething with righteous indignation, immediately calmed down."Could it be that Dr. Wilcox really had some unspeakable reason she couldn't reveal?""What exactly is this little girl's relationship with Kathleen? Why do they look so close?""So, Kathleen walked out mid-surgery because she found out who the donor was?""But even if that's true, as a doctor, she can't just leave a patient on the operating table."The reporters all thrust their microphones toward me."Kathleen, what is your relationship with the donor?"I opened my mouth. But before I could speak, Mom suddenly rushed forward and snatched the ph
