Maya's POV

I watched from my third-floor window as the driver rounded the lead SUV and opened the back door, and for one absurd second, I thought about pretending I wasn't home. Turning off my lights, letting the buzzer ring itself out, waiting for whoever this was to give up and leave.

Then he stepped out onto the sidewalk, and I understood immediately that giving up wasn't something this man did.

Even from three floors up, I recognized him instantly — the same sharp stillness from the terrace, the same unhurried, unreadable calm, except now it was daylight and he looked even more out of place among the cracked pavement and overflowing recycling bins of my building than he had in a ballroom. He wore a dark coat over a suit that probably cost more than my rent for the year, and he didn't so much as glance at the small crowd gathering to film him. He simply looked up.

Straight at my window.

I stepped back so fast I knocked my elbow against the frame.

By the time the knock came at my door — three measured raps, unhurried, like he had all the time in the world — I'd barely managed to smooth my hair and convince myself this was actually happening.

I opened the door and there he was, filling the entire frame of it, close enough now that I could see details I'd missed in the ballroom's dim lighting. Dark eyes, not the gold I remembered from last night. A faint, unreadable tightness around his mouth, like he was working hard to keep something contained.

"You," I said, which was possibly the least intelligent thing I could have said, but it was all that came out.

"Me," he agreed.

"How do you know where I live?"

"I have people for that."

"That's not comforting."

Something almost like amusement flickered across his face before disappearing again. "I'm not here to comfort you."

"Then why are you here?" I crossed my arms, mostly to stop my hands from shaking. "Look, about last night — I'm sorry. What I did wasn't fair to you. I was upset, and you were just standing there, and I used you to make a point to my ex. It wasn't right, and I—"

"Pack your things."

I blinked. "I'm sorry?"

"Your things." He said it slowly, like I might genuinely be struggling with the words. "Pack them. You're coming with me."

"I don't even know your name."

"Damon Ashford."

The name meant nothing to me in the moment, which apparently showed on my face, because something like disbelief crossed his.

"You really don't know who I am."

"Should I?"

"No," he said, after a pause, something almost like relief in his voice. "Actually, that's refreshing."

"That still doesn't explain why I'm supposed to pack anything."

"I need a personal assistant."

I laughed — one short, disbelieving sound. "You flew across town in a three-car convoy to offer me a job?"

"And what’s wrong with that?” He studied me for a long moment, something unreadable working behind his eyes. "I don't have time to explain everything right now. What I can tell you is that after last night, you're going to need somewhere to go, and I happen to need someone in my house."

"I have a life here."

"Do you?" He glanced past me, into the apartment — the garment bag still hanging on my closet door, the single suitcase I hadn't unpacked from a weekend trip months ago, the general sense of a life built around a wedding that no longer existed. "Because from where I'm standing, it looks like most of what you had here ended last night."

The words landed harder than they should have, mostly because he wasn't wrong.

"I have no experience being anyone's assistant," I said, grasping for something, anything, that might make this conversation make sense.

"You'll learn."

"This is insane. I don't know you. I kissed you one time, out of desperation, and now you want me to move into your house?"

"You kissed me," he agreed. "I didn't ask you to. But you did it anyway, and now here we are."

"I was drunk on humiliation, not alcohol. It didn't mean anything."

Something shifted in his expression at that — quick, controlled, gone almost before I registered it. "I know exactly what it meant."

"Then explain it to me."

"Not yet."

"That's not an answer."

"It's the only one I'm giving you today."

I opened my mouth to argue further, but he was already glancing past me again, toward the small window overlooking the street, where the crowd outside had grown considerably since I'd first looked down.

"You should also know," he said, "that by tonight, every pack in this territory will have heard exactly whose attention you caught last night. Whatever protection you had as Xavier Cross's fiancée is gone. What you have instead is considerably bigger, and considerably more dangerous to refuse."

My pulse spiked. "Dangerous how?"

He didn't answer that either. Instead, he reached past me, lifted the garment bag off my closet door with two fingers, and held it out to me like the conversation was already finished.

"I'll give you ten minutes to pack whatever actually matters to you," he said. "Everything else, I'll have replaced."

Maya's POVThe token sat on Damon's study desk an hour later, small and unassuming despite the chaos it had caused, security personnel filing in and out with updates that all amounted to the same frustrating conclusion: whoever left it had come and gone without a single witness."Ravenmoor markings again," Constance confirmed, examining it with the careful attention of someone who'd spent the past weeks becoming an unwilling expert. "Same craftsmanship as the first. This one's more direct, though. Left at your own event, during your own announcement. That's not subtlety. That's a message.""What message?" I asked."That they're capable of reaching you anywhere," Constance said grimly. "Even somewhere as heavily secured as tonight's gala."Damon's jaw had been tight since the moment Elias showed him the photo, and it hadn't loosened since. "I want the guest list cross-referenced against known coven associates. I want every staff member who worked tonight's event vetted again. If someon

  • I Kissed The Supreme Alpha By Mistake    Chapter 30: The Founders' Ball

Maya's POVThe ballroom looked like something out of a dream I hadn't known I was allowed to have — chandeliers dripping gold light across three hundred guests, the entire territory's power structure gathered under one roof in silk and tailored suits, string quartet playing something elegant enough to make my hands shake slightly where they rested against Damon's arm."You look terrified," he murmured, leading me through the entrance."I look like a woman about to be publicly announced as the Supreme Alpha's mate in front of everyone who's ever doubted her. Terrified feels appropriate.""You look magnificent. Voss will be insufferable about it for weeks."The burgundy gown had turned out to be the right call, as much as I hated admitting Voss's instincts had beaten mine this time. Heads turned as we crossed the room, whispers trailing in our wake, the particular hush of a crowd collectively recalibrating its understanding of the evening's stakes.I spotted Karen and Priya near the far

Maya's POV"Absolutely not," Voss said, holding up the gown like it had personally offended him. "This color washes you out completely. You need something with actual presence for an announcement this significant.""I thought you hated the color green," I said. "You fought me on the suit for a week.""That was different. That was a *suit*. This is a Founders' Ball gown, for the most consequential public relationship announcement this territory has seen in a decade. Completely different stakes." He tossed the offending gown aside and pulled another from the rack, deep burgundy, structured in a way that made even the hanger look dramatic. "This one.""That looks like something a villain wears in the third act.""Precisely the energy we're going for."I turned to Elias for backup, but he was too busy laughing into his tablet to be useful."Don't look at me," he said. "I stopped having opinions about your wardrobe after the great duck incident taught me you two argue better without my inp

  • I Kissed The Supreme Alpha By Mistake    Chapter 28: Damage Control

Maya's POV"Okay," Elias said, spreading three separate folders across the study desk with the energy of a man who'd clearly rehearsed this presentation, "we have options. Some good, some bad, one deeply unhinged that I'm only including because Ruth suggested it and I respect her too much not to.""Start with the unhinged one," I said. "I need the entertainment.""Ruth's suggestion: you publicly announce the relationship is fake, fake a breakup with Alpha Ashford, then swoop back in dramatically at the next council gala to prove everyone wrong. Very telenovela. She's very committed to the bit."Damon, seated across the desk, didn't even look up from the report he was reading. "Absolutely not.""Agreed, mostly for my own sanity," Elias said. "Option two, the good one: we get ahead of whatever Karen and Priya are planning by controlling the narrative first. Public statement confirming the relationship, brief acknowledgment of family estrangement without details, framing it as private fa

  • I Kissed The Supreme Alpha By Mistake    Chapter 27: Meet the Mother (Officially)

Maya's POV"So," Mom said, setting down her teacup with the particular deliberateness of a woman about to ask an uncomfortable question, "are we going to talk about the fact that you two are dating now, or are we all just going to keep pretending I haven't noticed the matching goofy smiles at breakfast?"I nearly choked on my coffee. Across the table, Damon — who'd wandered in for what he'd clearly assumed was a casual family breakfast — went very still, like a man realizing too late he'd walked into an ambush."Mrs. Ellison—""Diane," Mom corrected, not unkindly. "You've been feeding and housing me for a month. I think we're past formalities.""Diane," Damon amended, recovering some composure. "Yes. Maya and I are... together. Officially, as of last week.""I know. Ruth told me. Also Elias. Also the man who delivers groceries, somehow." Mom's eyes narrowed, though the corner of her mouth was twitching in a way that suggested she was enjoying this far more than either of us. "What I w

  • I Kissed The Supreme Alpha By Mistake    Chapter 26: Blood Is Thicker

Priya's POVPriya hadn't spoken to Aunt Karen in nearly two years — not since the falling out over Grandma's estate, the one where Karen had accused Priya's mother of playing favorites and stormed out of a funeral reception loud enough that half the pack still brought it up at parties. Calling her now felt like swallowing something bitter. She did it anyway."Well," Karen said, sliding into the booth across from her, eyeing the coffee shop with open disdain. "Didn't expect to hear from you. Last I checked, your side of the family thought mine was an embarrassment.""Things change." Priya wrapped both hands around her cup, steadying herself. "I think we want the same thing now.""And what's that?""For Maya to stop winning." The words cracked out sharper than she intended, months of buried resentment finally splitting open. "Everywhere I turn, it's Maya this, Maya that. My own mother asked me last week why I couldn't be more like my cousin. I nearly threw a plate at her."Something shi
