CHAPTER 177

BRANDON

Leo's little hand was warm in mine, and for the first time since I woke up, my chest didn't hurt.

I leaned forward as far as my stitches would let me and kissed his forehead. He wrinkled his nose like he always did, but he didn't pull away.

"When are you coming home?" he asked, swinging his legs against the bed frame.

"Soon, buddy. Very soon."

"Good, because Grandma's house is boring."

I blinked.

"Grandma?"

"Yes." He nodded like it was the most normal thing in the world. "Sh

CHAPTER 177BRANDONLeo's little hand was warm in mine, and for the first time since I woke up, my chest didn't hurt.I leaned forward as far as my stitches would let me and kissed his forehead. He wrinkled his nose like he always did, but he didn't pull away."When are you coming home?" he asked, swinging his legs against the bed frame."Soon, buddy. Very soon.""Good, because Grandma's house is boring."I blinked."Grandma?""Yes." He nodded like it was the most normal thing in the world. "She says that's what I should call her."I turned my head slowly toward my mother. She stood by the window, pretending to be very interested in the curtains. This was the woman who once corrected a waiter for calling her "ma'am" because it made her feel old. Now she was letting a child, Clara’s child, call her Grandma."Did she now," I said."And Miss Bailey told the nanny I can only watch cartoons after I finish my vegetables." Leo's face twisted like the words tasted bad. "All of them. Even the

THALIAI was halfway down the hallway with Olivia, mentally going over everything I needed to prepare before tonight, when I caught two nurses talking near the station."...surprised how alert he's been since this morning," one of them was saying. "Yesterday he could barely string a sentence together. Now he's up chatting like nothing happened.""That's a good sign, though," the other replied. "It means the swelling is finally coming down properly."I slowed without meaning to.Something tightened in my chest.I'd only left Brandon's room a few hours ago, after he'd first opened his eyes. Back then, he had barely managed to look at me before exhaustion pulled him under again. He'd looked so fragile, so unlike himself, that I'd been afraid to even breathe too loudly around him.And now, apparently, everything had changed."Thalia?" Olivia touched my arm. "You okay?""I just heard them talking about Brandon." I glanced back toward his room. "They said he's more awake now. I want to see

CHAPTER 175THALIABrandon's eyes opened slowly, and I couldn't help the smile that broke across my face, wide and unguarded, everything I'd been holding back for days finally spilling loose at once.I moved closer to the bed immediately, blinking hard against the tears gathering fast. This man had saved me, had ordered an investigation into my accident without ever once mentioning it, and I didn't know if there were enough words in the world to properly thank him for any of it."Brandon." His name came out barely above a whisper, trembling with everything I felt. "You're awake. You're actually awake."His eyes found mine for a brief, fragile second, something flickering behind them that looked almost like recognition. Then they slid shut again.Panic surged through me instantly, sharp and electric. I lunged for the call button beside his bed, pressing it hard, my heart hammering against my ribs."No, no, stay awake, please—"A nurse rushed in within seconds, followed quickly by the d

CHAPTER 174THALIA"Adrian?"I stared at him, genuinely stunned, my brain struggling to catch up with what he'd just offered like it hadn't fully processed the words the first time."What are you even doing here?" I asked, still half in shock. "How did you know to come?"He rubbed the back of his neck, a little sheepish despite the seriousness of the moment. "I just wanted to check on you. Figured you might need someone around, given everything. I didn't expect to walk into this, but I'm glad I did."I moved closer to him, searching his face for any hint of hesitation, any flicker of doubt that might mean he was only saying this out of pressure rather than genuine willingness."Can you?" My voice came out smaller than I meant it to. "Can you really give him the blood?""I can," he said simply. "And I will."Before I could say anything else, the doctor stepped out of the room, clipboard in hand, expression grave but focused. Catherine was on her feet instantly, moving toward him with a

CHAPTER 173THALIAThe second the car stopped, I was out of it, running for the elevator before Knox had even cut the engine, leaving him and Olivia calling after me from somewhere behind. The doors barely opened wide enough before I slipped through them, my heart pounding harder with every floor that ticked by. I jabbed the button for his floor twice, three times, like that might somehow make the elevator move faster, my reflection in the metal doors looking pale and wild-eyed back at me. The doors finally slid open, and I bolted out before they'd even finished parting.I found Cathrine outside his room, head buried in her palms, shoulders shaking in a way that stopped me cold in the middle of the hallway. The fluorescent lights buzzed faintly overhead, too bright, throwing everything into a harsh, unforgiving glare.Did he die already. The thought hit me so hard I nearly stumbled, my whole body freezing in place, refusing to take another step forward until I forced it to. My legs f

CHAPTER 172THALIAI stared at the screen a second longer, then something in me shifted. The shock burned off fast, replaced by something harder."They can shove those rumours in their miserable ass," I said, scoffing, turning away from the screen. "I don't care what they say. Let's go.""You sure?" Knox asked, already reaching for his keys anyway. "Because we can wait an hour, let this die down a little before—""No." I grabbed my bag off the counter. "The longer I sit here letting them talk, the more true it starts sounding to people. I'd rather face it head-on."Olivia kept murmuring as we stepped out. "I'll start working on some kind of damage control while we're gone. A statement, maybe. Or I'll call that media lawyer Catherine mentioned, get something official drafted before this spirals any further.""Do whatever you think is best," I said. "I just need to get this statement done."She nodded, already typing something into her phone before we'd even made it to the door. The mom
