Chapter 3

作者: Depressed Pear
I frantically shoved Henry away, terrified that they would send me back to that horrible place. Tears streamed down my face as I fell to my knees before him.

Henry shot a long look at me before averting his gaze and leaving.

I clutched the blanket as if my life depended on it, trembling violently as I hid under the covers. Suddenly, I felt someone patting me before slowly pulling the blanket away.

"Don't be scared, Charlotte. It's me. Terence Carter."

Terence Carter.

I opened my eyes and shot a timid look at him, slowly calming down.

Terence had been my neighbor when I was a child. Angelina's mother treated me terribly at the time, scolding and beating me without rhyme or reason. Terence was always the one who took me in when she chased me out of the house.

We lost contact with each other after I returned to the Sharpe family.

"Your body's still very weak, Charlotte. Here. Have some soup," Terence said as he offered a bowl of chicken soup to me.

However, I didn't dare accept it. I was too scared to trust anyone ever again.

Terence placed the bowl of soup down and reached behind me.

I was briefly stunned before I reached behind to unbutton my patient gown, moving like a puppet on strings.

Terence froze for a split second before immediately grabbing my hand and buttoning the gown again.

"I just wanted… to fluff the pillow for you," he explained. "I really regret it, Charlotte. I thought that you were living a good life with the Sharpes. I also assumed that you were going to marry Henry soon. If I had been a little more determined, you wouldn't have…"

He choked on his words as his eyes reddened. A hot tear rolled down his cheek and dripped on my palm, causing ripples to radiate across my heart.

If this was a dream, I didn't want to wake up. However, it didn't take long for the dream to be shattered.

"Stripping in public to seduce the men who were at the party wasn't enough for you, Charlotte? You're even seducing your doctor now?"

The hospital room door was thrown open. Anger and disdain were written all across Mom's face.

Terence shielded me behind him as he brandished my medical record. "Charlotte is severely ill, Mrs. Sharpe. Please refrain from stressing her out even more."

"Post-traumatic stress disorder? There's no way that she has that. We just sent her to the academy so that she would learn the rules. Why would she develop PTSD from that?"

Mom averted her gaze after glancing at the medical record.

Angelina supported her with a pained look on her face as she tried to advise me. "She's right, Char. I know that you and Dr. Carter are old friends, but that doesn't give you the right to forge a medical record to anger them and make them worry about you."

"If you doubt my professionalism, you can ask other medical organizations to run tests on Ms. Charlotte, Mrs. Sharpe," Terence said with a frown. "Our priority is to cure Ms. Charlotte as soon as possible."

His tone was extremely firm, which planted a seed of doubt in Mom's mind, especially when she recalled my strange behavior.

However, she swiftly smothered that idea when she remembered how thorough Angelina was with her work. She had even personally dropped by the academy to investigate it, confirming the fact that I had willingly harmed myself and committed those heinous acts.

She refused to believe that a scheming woman like me would develop post-traumatic stress disorder.

"Stop humiliating yourself in front of everyone, Charlotte. Come home with me right now," Mom demanded with a wave of her hand, prompting Angelina to immediately dart forward to grab me.

"No…" I whined while shaking my head, frantically swatting her hand away.

The bowl of chicken soup toppled off the table and spilled all over the floor.

Mom's expression darkened in an instant. "Behave yourself, Charlotte Sharpe!" she berated sharply.

Terence pulled me behind him and shot serious looks at them. "I already told you that Charlotte's in really bad shape right now, Mrs. Sharpe. She can't leave the hospital yet. Will you only be satisfied after you've killed her?"

Mom's expression shifted slightly. She shot a mocking look at me before saying, "I know my own daughter better than anyone else. She picked up her habit of lying from her foster mother. Unfortunately, it's impossible to fix her terrible habits."

Henry barged into the room the moment the words left her lips. He rushed toward me, shoving Terence aside to grip my shoulders.

"Why didn't you tell me sooner? If I had known that you were suffering, I never would have allowed you to continue staying there!"

Henry frowned, dodging Angelina's outstretched hand with a look of disdain. "You're simply paying for the consequences of your actions, Angelina. You owe this to Charlotte," he said.Angelina suddenly burst into laughter and caressed her belly. "But what if I told you that I'm pregnant with your child? Can you bear to see me and your child be locked behind bars?"Henry was utterly stunned, staring at her in disbelief.Angelina rose to her feet and slowly approached me. "Did you really believe that Henry loved you, Charlotte? He couldn't stop crawling into my bed when you were suffering in Trueheart Academy for the last three years."In the past, her words would have crushed me. However, at that moment, I felt nothing but disgust. I also didn't want a man who told me he loved me while hugging another woman.Henry looked apologetic as he approached me. "Give me a year, Charlotte. I'll get rid of Angelina once she gives birth to the baby. We'll get married after that, okay? I swear t

Mom was Grandpa's only daughter, so he showered her with love ever since she was a child. He sternly scolded her for the first time in her life when she told him that she wanted to marry Dad.However, his criticisms weren't enough to stop Mom's hopeless romantic tendencies. He had no choice but to accept Dad into his family when she became pregnant with me.Dad was just a pauper. He couldn't satisfy his pitiful pride when he was with the Ellons, always feeling as if he was beneath them."That's why I cooked up this scheme. I didn't expect the old man to notice that something was amiss. In the end, he still brought Charlotte back. I had no choice but to swap the old geezer's medicine for Angelina's sake. You have no idea how much he reminded me of a dog when he begged me for his medicine!"Dad burst out laughing after he was done speaking. The color gradually drained from Mom's face as she listened to his words. She had always been under the impression that Grandpa passed away due

It felt like an entire lifetime had passed since I last returned to the Sharpe residence.Mom and Dad stood at the door anxiously, looking even more prim and proper than when I had returned to the Sharpe residence for the first time. They sighed when they noticed my indifferent expression, looking a little relieved.I smiled when I noticed Angelina standing in the corner, desperately trying to make her presence as small as possible."This is how you've decided to make it up to me?" I asked.Mom and Dad shared an awkward look between themselves before hanging their heads and remaining silent. My smile widened as a mocking look appeared in my eyes.Mom sobbed profusely as she grabbed my hand, saying, "We know that you've endured a lot of hardship, Charlotte. But Angelina has also learned her lesson. Can you please show her mercy? Don't worry. We'll tell her to move out immediately. She'll never show her face in front of you again, okay?"Angelina approached us as she spoke and san

It was as if the people's voices were amplified with a megaphone as their words drilled into my ears. My entire body shook violently. When I whipped my head around, I noticed Angelina standing far away in the corner of my eye with a faintly mocking expression on her face."Hey. Is this you?" a greasy-looking middle-aged man asked as he approached me and threw a card in my face. "I see that you couldn't resist the urge to continue your business even in the hospital. How insatiable are you?"I looked down at the card, freezing in place when I noticed my information printed on it.The middle-aged man looked down his nose at me. "You're still quite pretty even though you've already been toyed with countless times. Tell me. How much for one night—"Someone punched him before he could finish his sentence, causing him to stagger to the floor. A pale and slender hand snatched the card off the floor and tore it to shreds."Get out!"Terence wore a stormy expression on his handsome face. I

"Let me stay by your side, Charlotte," Henry said with a gentle smile, reaching out for me. "Don't worry. I won't let you get hurt ever again."However, I no longer dared to believe in his gentleness and affection. When we met for the first time, everyone looked down on me because I was the heiress of the Sharpe family who had been raised the "wrong" way.Henry was the only one who didn't shun me, treating me like a friend. He told me that he only treated Angelina as his sister, but since their families shared a close relationship, they entered into an engagement long ago. However, he told me that everything was alright. He would remove all obstacles and marry me.I believed him, but he ended up breaking his promise.Henry originally planned to announce our wedding plans to everyone during my welcoming party. However, with just a few words from Angelina, he believed that I was a wicked sister who was jealous of her own sister and destroyed her innocence.I knelt in the rain for an

I looked up at Henry. His eyes were full of regret and sympathy. However, it was too late.It wasn't as if I hadn't begged him to save me in the past. The academy allowed us to call our families at fixed times to inform them that we were safe. I had spent a long time thinking about who to call when I got my first call. In the end, I decided to call Henry, knowing that Mom and Dad wouldn't believe a single word that I said, no matter how much I tried to convince them. That day, I clutched the phone in a death grip and told Henry through tears about all the abuse that I was forced to endure. I hoped that he would be able to save me from the bottomless abyss that I was stuck in.However, he simply scoffed on the other end of the line. "Stop with your schemes, Charlotte. Mr. and Mrs. Sharpe only sent you there to learn the rules. Be good during your time there. Naturally, we'll bring you back once you've learned to behave yourself."He hung up after he was done speaking.Despair ove
