CHAPTER FIFTY: After Henry

last update 公開日: 2026-08-01 23:49:15

Emma's POV

The door closes behind him.

I stand in the hallway with my hands still on my sides, and I look at the wood of the door for a long moment. I do not move. I do not breathe. I do not do anything at all.

Then I walk back to the kitchen.

Julian is standing at the counter. He has not sat back down. The envelope is where Henry left it, small and cream and unopened, and Julian does not move or reach out or anything. He is looking at me the way you look at someone who has just walked through

  • I Left Broken and Fat, I Came Back His Boss With Triplets   CHAPTER FIFTY THREE: The Redirect

Emma's POV Julian is in the car when I come out.He is in the back seat, hands folded loosely in his lap, eyes on the door of the building. When he sees me, his shoulders release by one degree that only I would notice.I get in beside him.The driver looks at me in the rearview mirror, waiting for the destination.I do not tell him back to my home."Rue Bayard," I say. "The Vanity Fair Paris bureau."The driver's eyes flick to Julian.Julian does not react. He simply looks at me, and he waits. The car pulls into traffic. We are three blocks from Bellamy Inc before Julian speaks."Emma.""Yes.""Are you going to tell me what you are doing?""I am going to the news house that published the article.""I gathered. And...?""And I am not going to Vanity Fair to ask them to retract the article.""I gathered that too, but what are you going for then?""I am going to give them a different story. Not a rebuttal, I am going to give them a story of my own. Something that goes online tonight. So

  • I Left Broken and Fat, I Came Back His Boss With Triplets   CHAPTER FIFTY TWO: The Breath On The Line

Emma's POV I let him breathe for a long moment.I do not fill the silence. I do not ask him what he wants. I do not soften the moment by giving him the first word. I stand in the empty boardroom with the article face up on the table and I listen to the man who used to be my loveless husband, the one I was handed to by our fathers in a marriage that was never mine to choose, breathe into a phone from somewhere in this city, and I let him be the one who has to speak first. He speaks."Emma."Just my name. Not Ms. Bellamy, not the careful correction he used in the boardroom. Just Emma, in a voice I have never heard him use, the voice of a man who is not performing anything because there is nothing left to perform."Liam.""I read the article.""I know.""My father told me he had gone to see you.""He did."A pause."He should not have done that without asking me.""He should not have needed to ask you."The silence that follows is the specific silence of a man absorbing a sentence he ca

  • I Left Broken and Fat, I Came Back His Boss With Triplets   CHAPTER FIFTY ONE: The Room Decides

Emma's POV The discussion runs for an hour. Not the kind of hour where people posture and circle and wait for the most important person in the room to signal which direction they are leaning so everyone else can lean the same way. This is the kind of hour where people say what they actually think, because the woman at the head of the table has just put the worst thing about herself on the table face up and asked them to look at it.Bertrand wants a formal press release, clean and professional. Bellamy Inc confirms the identity of its CEO and has no further comment at this time.Margaux disagrees. She is the woman who cried during her second interview because I offered her a role she had been waiting eleven years to be offered. She has not cried since."No further comment sounds like hiding, Emma. You have been hidden for two years. The article is punishing you for that. If we respond with more hiding, we confirm everything they wrote about you.""We are not confirming anything," Bert

I do not do anything at all. Then I walk back to the kitchen.Julian is standing at the counter. He has not sat back down. The envelope is where Henry left it, small and cream and unopened, and Julian does not move or reach out or anything. He is looking at me the way you look at someone who has just walked through something you cannot follow them into, and he does not speak until I do."Julian.""Yes.""That was his father.""I gathered."I sit down on the stool. My legs feel like they belong to someone else. I put my elbows on the counter, and I put my face in my hands, and I stay there for a moment because standing has stopped being something I know how to do.Julian does not touch me. He does not tell me it is going to be alright. He does not say any of the things a lesser man would say to fill the sp

  • I Left Broken and Fat, I Came Back His Boss With Triplets   CHAPTER FORTY NINE: The One Who Came

Emma's POV I press the button."Send him up."The man on the screen nods once, and the screen goes dark, and I stand at the intercom for a moment longer with my finger still on the button.Julian is watching me from the kitchen.I turn around."Adèle. Please take Willa to her room."Adèle does not ask. She lifts Willa from Julian's lap with one clean motion, and Willa lets herself be lifted without protest, which she only does when she has decided the adults in the room need her to be somewhere else, and Adèle carries her down the hallway. The nursery door closes softly.Julian stands up."Do you want me to go?""No.""Do you want me to stay in the kitchen?""I want you where you are."He nods, and he sits back down on the stool.I walk to the front door.I do not open it yet. I stand behind it with my hand on the frame, and I breathe once, and I think about who is on the other side of this door and what I am going to do when I see them, and I understand that I have not decided any of

  • I Left Broken and Fat, I Came Back His Boss With Triplets   CHAPTER FORTY EIGHT: The Second Knock

Emma's POV Bertrand leaves at seven fifty. He does not want to. He stands at my door for a long moment with his hand on the frame and his coat still on, and he looks back at me the way you look at someone you would carry through the next twelve hours yourself if you could, and I tell him quietly that I need thirty minutes alone before the day begins, and he nods once and goes.I close the door.I stand in the hallway. And, I breathe. Then I walk back to the kitchen and I look at the paper on the counter, fold it in half, and I put it in the drawer where I put things I am not ready to deal with yet, then I close the drawer.Adèle arrives at seven fifty five. She comes through the door with her coat still buttoned and her bag on her shoulder and the specific quiet composure of a woman who has already been on her phone for the last twenty minutes and has apparently, from the look on her face, already read the article. She sets her bag down. She takes off her coat. She looks at me across
