Chapter 1

Tonight was the Moretti family’s annual gala, and the family elders and members had all arrived with their dates.

As the Don of the Moretti family, Nico should have attended with me, but he was nowhere to be seen.

When I walked into the ballroom alone, every head turned toward me. The gazes lingered for two seconds before drifting away, and no one came over to exchange pleasantries.

Nico’s second-in-command passed the word around. “The Boss has something to take care of. He’ll be here later.”

Everyone knew that Nico was somewhere in Brownsville, dealing with a mess involving a girl named Lola and the loan sharks who were after her.

A few people behind me were whispering among themselves.

“Five years. He must be tired of Claire by now. She never socializes, and she has way too much pride. Who could put up with that?”

“I’ve seen that girl. She looks so pitiful, you can’t help feeling sorry for her.”

“I told you, Nico falls for a sob story. I saw him comforting that girl with my own eyes last time.”

I held my wineglass, my expression perfectly composed.

Just then, the ballroom doors swung open.

Nico walked in wearing the black suit I had picked out for him, one hand tucked into his pocket. Lola was at his side in a pale-colored dress, her face drained of color.

Clutching his sleeve, she half hid behind him and whispered, “Mr. Moretti, there are so many people here... I’m a little scared.”

Nico glanced down at her and smiled. “What are you afraid of? I’m here.”

Then he lifted his gaze and found me.

He walked over and wrapped his arms around me, lowering his head to murmur in my ear. There was a faint note of casual reproach in his voice.

“Why didn’t you wait for me? Why did you come on your own?”

I offered no explanation, merely replying in an even tone, “You had things to take care of, so I came ahead.”

He had never been the one left waiting, so he had no idea how endless the hours could feel.

Before leaving to find Lola, he had told me he would be back in a moment. After that, he hadn’t answered a single message.

I had waited four hours.

Lola followed him over, and her eyes immediately filled with tears.

“It’s all my fault... If it weren’t for my family’s troubles, Mr. Moretti would have arrived with you on time.”

She sounded as though she were blaming herself, but beneath her words lurked a hint of triumph, as if she were flaunting just how important she was to him.

Everyone in the ballroom was watching me, waiting to see how I, the woman who had been regarded as the future Donna for five years, would handle this orphaned girl whom the Don himself had taken under his wing.

I had no intention of letting them turn me into a sideshow.

So I gave her a polite smile. “Don’t overthink it. You’re a guest Nico invited.”

To my surprise, the moment the words left my mouth, all color drained from Lola’s face.

Her voice trembled. “I... I don’t deserve to be called a guest. I know I don’t belong here. I’ll leave right now.”

She was already turning to leave.

With those tears and that retreat, she had twisted my words into something cruel. Everyone looked at me as though I were a heartless woman.

Nico took a few steps forward and caught her by the wrist, his voice low. “Where do you think you’re going? Who here would dare say a word against you?”

Then he turned to me, frowning.

“Your attitude toward people needs to change. Lola just graduated, and her family has been through a lot. Her brother asked me to look after her before he died, so I can’t just abandon her.”

I watched him hold on to Lola.

He had once held me in those same arms and told me that it was all right if I didn’t talk much or seemed a little cold, as long as he understood me.

Now he was telling me to change.

The family members around us watched with undisguised amusement.

At that moment, my phone vibrated inside my clutch.

I took it out. On the screen was a brief, formally worded reply from an international legal-aid organization.

[Dear Claire Mercer,

Your application to the legal-aid program at the Rohingya refugee camp has been accepted. The camp is under restricted access and requires a long-term on-site commitment. Please consider carefully before confirming.]

I looked down at the message for two seconds, then tapped Confirm.

I had always been meticulous about everything I did.

Six days was enough time to put everything in order and leave.

  • I Left the Don Without a Goodbye   Chapter 9

Three days after Gerald brought me back to New York, he hosted a dinner in my honor. He told me there were many people who wanted to see me.The venue was in Midtown Manhattan. It wasn’t particularly lavish, but the guests were all influential figures in their own right.Among them were Wall Street fund managers, community leaders from Brooklyn, and entrepreneurs who had built their fortunes in the medical device industry. They were all faces I had seen four years earlier at my makeshift legal-aid desk.Back then, they had sat across from me looking so nervous and uneasy that they could barely get their words out. Now, they approached me one after another with drinks in hand, bowing their heads slightly as they greeted me with the words, “Esteemed Attorney Mercer.”Gerald stood beside me and said quietly, “They’ve been waiting for this day for a long time.”“Did you arrange all this?”“They wanted to come on their own. I simply let them know.”More than halfway through the dinner, I to

I frowned and studied the man for a couple of seconds before finally remembering where I had seen him.Four years ago, he had sat across from me at the makeshift consultation desk I had set up, wearing a faded shirt and clutching a stack of documents in his hands. He had looked at me helplessly and asked, “I don’t know who else to turn to. Can you help me?”“Gerald Connors,” I said.He smiled and straightened up. “I’m grateful you still remember me.”A startled gasp came from behind me. “Gerald Connors? The tech mogul Mr. Moretti has been trying to work with?”Lola’s voice was sharp, as though she deliberately wanted everyone to hear her. Nico stood nearby, his expression growing darker. The Moretti family had been eager to work with Gerald Connors, but he had never answered Nico’s calls or accepted his invitations.Lola seemed to suddenly understand something. “No wonder Miss Mercer could stay in a refugee camp for so long. It turns out she had someone backing her all along.”Everyone

The day my assignment ended, I slung the same backpack I had brought with me four years earlier over my shoulder and walked out along the muddy road that led away from the camp. When I had first arrived four years ago, no one had come to welcome me. Now, as I left, a line of people stood behind me, watching as I made my way toward the checkpoint at the end of the road. That was when I saw Nico.He was standing outside the checkpoint, looking much thinner than before, his face pale and dark circles beneath his eyes making him look as though he hadn’t slept properly in a very long time. The moment he saw me emerge, he took a step forward.“Claire.”I ignored him and kept walking. He hurried after me, his voice lower and hoarser than I remembered. “I finally found you. Four years, Claire. I’ve been looking for you for four years.”He seemed desperate to pour out everything he had wanted to say over the past few years, all at once.“I’ve prepared a law firm for you, your own law firm. You

Nico’s face was deathly pale, as though his soul had been ripped from his body, leaving behind nothing but an empty shell.Ten days ago. That was when he had taken my venue for Lola. No, it had probably started even earlier, when he repeatedly made me suffer for Lola’s sake. By then, I had already begun planning my departure. That night, I hadn’t argued or made a scene. I had simply watched him leave with another woman in his arms.It was because I no longer cared.Nico sank onto the edge of the bed and pulled the pillow I usually slept on into his arms, clutching it tightly.“No... Claire... You can’t just leave me like this...”He bent forward, burying his face in the pillow as a choked sob escaped him.Nico locked himself in his room for a day and a night. When he finally emerged, his eyes were bloodshot, and he immediately ordered everyone to find me.He instructed the entire family to address me as Donna, even though we had never married.Even though I no longer wanted him.Nico h

The lights in the hospital corridor were painfully bright.Nico sat in a chair beside Lola’s hospital bed, frowning at his phone as he waited for my reply. But even by nightfall, I still hadn’t answered him.His frown deepened, yet he was so preoccupied that he didn’t even notice Lola opening her eyes and secretly watching him from her bed.All he could think about was the sight of me kneeling on the floor, clutching the broken porcelain fragments with tears in my eyes. His Claire had never looked so vulnerable before, and the thought of my tears made his heart ache with an almost unbearable pain.Unable to sit still any longer, Nico gripped his phone and stood up. He was going back to find me.Just then, Lola, still with her eyes closed as though caught in a nightmare, called out in a tearful voice, “Brother... please don’t leave me here all alone...”Nico stopped in his tracks and turned to look at her. She lay curled up in the hospital bed, looking pale and frail. Her brother, Paul,

  • I Left the Don Without a Goodbye   Chapter 4

I didn’t see Nico again over the next few days.Rumors that he had dumped me spread like wildfire throughout the family, but I paid them no mind. Every day, I was busy coordinating the transfer of my assets with my wealth manager and wrapping up my outstanding cases.I had set aside my final day for packing. I didn’t have much to take with me, so I expected to finish in less than half a day.But when I returned to the villa’s study after finishing my work, I found my case files scattered all over the floor, several pages trampled and smeared with dirt.Lola stood in the middle of the room with her head bowed, sobbing quietly. When she heard me open the door, her sobs briefly subsided, and she lifted her tear-streaked face, looking utterly pitiful.“Miss Mercer... I’m sorry...”She was crying so hard that she could barely catch her breath. “I just wanted to look at the figurine... It slipped out of my hand...”Nico stood beside her, his brows knitted tightly together. My gaze passed ove
