Chapter 2

Author: Big Introvert
"Dinner's here." Ashton pushed the door open without knocking, scattering my thoughts.

I stared at my phone's now-black screen and realized I'd fallen into another trip down memory lane. The smell of the spicy stew drifted through the basement, and my stomach answered with loud growls.

"You're okay eating down here, right?" Ashton set the food on the table by the bed, sounding pleased with himself. "I even got you this special beagle placemat. I picked it out just for you."

Oh. So he knew I liked beagles. How long had he been snooping on me?

I slid off the bed, gave the shackle on my ankle a light tug, then sat down at the table and took the cutlery he held out. My fingers brushed his by accident, and he jerked back as if I'd burned him.

Ashton held his hand to his nose and breathed in deeply. His face went slack with this weird, satisfied bliss, and he let out a breathy laugh.

"I knew it. You smell amazing everywhere, Cami."

If I weren't locked in this basement, I honestly might've called the cops and reported him for being on drugs. He sure looked the part.

The food tasted incredible. I'd never had takeout this good from any food truck. While I ate, Ashton didn't say a word. He just sat across from me, watching me intently.

When he kept his mouth shut, he looked totally normal. One could even say he had that polished, high-roller vibe. After all, he'd been wearing a tailored suit that definitely wasn't off the clearance rack.

There was also the fact that Seth had called Bianca, who resembled Ashton, a big client. That meant Ashton was probably some kind of CEO or whatever.

Of course, if he didn't randomly let out those creepy, pervy little chuckles, I'd be a lot more inclined to believe he was like a proper male lead in a romance novel instead of a full-blown obsessive stalker.

There was still a little food left in the bowl. When Ashton saw I wasn't going to finish it, he came around and took the chair I'd just been in.

That was when I noticed he'd changed to different cutlery. When he caught me looking, he seemed a little thrown for once.

"If you said I could use your cutlery, I would've. But you didn't." He rolled his own cutlery between his fingers, his voice dropping low. "The truth is, I really, really want to."

Well. A gentlemanly stalker, then.

I flopped back onto the bed and mumbled, "Knock yourself out."

It wasn't like I was the one using his cutlery.

That first night, Ashton didn't sleep next to me. He gave me the same line as before—he would only do it if I allowed him to.

I turned him down. Having the whole bed to myself felt amazing. I could roll around however I wanted. I had zero interest in going through some typical romance-novel scenario where the heroine woke up in the guy's arms—in the summer, no less.

Forget how hot and stuffy that would be—I wouldn't even be able to roll over. I'd be stuck in one position from lights-out to sunrise. Whoever slept like that would be miserable.

The next morning, Ashton came downstairs fully dressed for work. He asked for a hug, then headed out.

On the third day, he asked for two hugs. On the fourth, he wanted me to wish him good morning and goodnight. He recorded both on his phone.

On the fifth day, I received a bunch of intimate photos from Bianca. Some were of her and Seth in bed, some in the car, and some in a pool.

I had to hand it to her—it took real talent to look that satisfied with so little to work with.

To me, sex with Seth had always been extremely low-effort. Of course, that was because there wasn't much happening in the first place. Honestly, it was one of his few good qualities.

I nudged Ashton's leg with my foot once we got to the master bedroom, crossing my arms with a lazy smile. "Weren't you afraid I'd refuse to forgive you in court? Or that I'd fall for Seth again when I was home with him?""Cami, you wouldn't do that to me." Ashton wrapped his arms around me from behind, talking as he trailed soft kisses along my neck. "You needed a real reason to walk away from him for good. Something legitimate. And I…"He paused, lowered his head, and kissed me. It went on for a long time before I finally heard his voice again, hoarse and rough. "And I… I'd have died without you. Life wouldn't have been any different from being in prison. I can't live without you, Cami."Ashton and Seth were nothing alike. Calling Seth gentle in bed was generous—he was more useless than anything. It wasn't tiring, but it also didn't pleasure me much. But Ashton was different. He was clumsy, but so damn earnest. No matter how I screamed for mercy, he kept going like a dog in heat.

In the third month after I moved out and rented my new place, my company welcomed a new boss—Ashton. He arrived looking absurdly well-groomed, like he'd dressed for a photo shoot instead of work. He even did a full lap around the office, touring every corner. My coworker at the next desk stared at him and mumbled, "What is he, a peacock showing off his tail?""Maybe he is." I chuckled, my gaze dropping to a text that had appeared on my phone at some point."Cami, will you have dinner with me?"That was all. I dialed the number, but it was disconnected.I exited Messages and opened a chapping app instead. "Ashton, you're strutting around like a lion patrolling his territory."His reply came almost immediately. "I am whatever you say I am."He even attached a photo of a baby lion. That evening, I went to the place we'd agreed on, but Ashton was nowhere in sight. A second later, he suddenly appeared behind me.I whipped around, instinctively backing away to dodge his arms."Cam

Seth cried, "Cami, you're just sick. You've got Stockholm syndrome. You fell in love with your abuser!"I yanked myself out of Seth's arms and stepped back up to the microphone. "Your Honor, I choose not to pursue any charges against Ashton Grayson. I'm willing to sign a letter of forgiveness."I pulled the photos I'd prepared in advance out of my pocket. "At the same time, I want to accuse my fiance of attempting to illegally imprison me."My lawyer clearly hadn't seen this coming. The look on his face as he took the evidence from me was… complicated, to say the least."Cami, what are you talking about?" Seth was pinned in the gallery. He stared at me in disbelief, his eyes practically popping out of their sockets. He kept struggling, desperate to explain himself."You saw me buy that chain that day, didn't you? I wasn't trying to lock you up! I just wanted to get a dog. I remember you saying before that you liked beagles!""Seth, can you drop the act already?" I honestly could

That night, after Bianca went home, I was jolted awake by a rustling outside my door. I caught a glimpse of Seth's shadow through the crack between the door and the floor. It slid back and forth across that thin strip of light. The gap was too small to see clearly, so I slipped my phone's camera under the door and watched the screen, recording everything he did.He held a yardstick and measured the distance from my bedroom to the bathroom. He was planning to lock me up.…Early the next morning, Seth left the house. I had no idea what he went to buy, but when he came back, he was extra cautious. My guess was that he'd bought an ankle shackle. When saving me from the basement, he'd broken the chain off my ankle himself, telling me any love that didn't give me freedom was selfish. Yet now, he wanted to cage me.Once Seth walked out of the bedroom, I opened my door and walked straight up to him."Cami, what's wrong?" He looked on edge.Seeing that I was awake, he rushed to explai

I said, "I don't feel awful."I clenched my hands together, my thumbs digging into each other. The pain snapped me back, and I glanced down. By accident, I caught a glimpse of Bianca's foot resting on Seth's leg under the table.Their faces, though, were completely calm, as if nothing was happening. They were practically award-winning actors. All the exhaustion I'd bottled up over countless days and nights finally blew up in that moment. After the dust settled, all that was left was anger.I finally understood why I was so tired.Every day, Seth acted like he was a devoted fiance, and I had to keep playing my part as his perfect other half, even though we both knew whatever we'd felt for each other was long gone.First, he wanted me to act like the doting girlfriend who was madly in love with him. Then, he needed me to play the gracious fiancee who didn't care he was cheating. Now, he even wanted me to act like I was a victim who'd been held captive, act like I still loved him,

I said, "Enough, Seth. Stop pretending to be all devoted."Seth froze. "Cami, you're upset? Why?""Because you make me sick. Don't you get it? All of this was my—"Before I could get the word "choice" out, a paramedic jabbed me with a sedative. "The patient is under control. We're transferring her to the hospital for treatment…"…When I woke up again, three days had passed.A photo of Seth, backlit by the sun, had been snapped and blasted all over the internet as promo.Tons of people contacted me, saying that while I'd been missing, Seth had gone crazy looking for me. They'd congratulated me on having such a good fiance.I didn't reply to a single message. I just deleted them one by one.The moment I got back, I told Seth I wanted to call off our engagement. He acted like he hadn't heard me and just locked me up at home.He deleted Ashton's number from my phone. He didn't ask or explain anything; he just told me that he was doing this for my own good. After I was "rescued"
