Ailara's POV

"Are you sure that you've thought this through? If you break the mate bond, you and your Alpha will be in terrible agony."

The staff member at the council hall sought confirmation from me one last time.

I nodded without any hesitation.

He approved my application, then informed me, "Your mate bond will fade completely within seven days."

"Okay."

After leaving the council hall, I dragged my exhausted body back home.

Staring into the deathly pale face looking back at me in the mirror, I suddenly felt my abdomen start twinging with pain again.

Two days ago, on the night of the full moon, the pack's Gamma warriors suddenly went berserk.

When the chaos broke out, my mate and Alpha of the pack, Lucian Perell, had been standing beside me. However, he had immediately run off to save Freya Barton without a second thought.

I was knocked down to the ground by a Gamma warrior who had lost control. Within seconds, a sharp tearing pain radiated from my abdomen. As blood soaked my dress, I anxiously cried out for Lucian to help me.

Yet, his entire focus was on Freya, and he didn't even look back at me as he said, "Freya has a frail constitution and can't handle this kind of shock. Once I've gotten her settled, I'll come back to save you."

The agony coming from my abdomen dragged me into the darkness. The last thing I saw right before my vision went completely dark was Lucian's back as he carried Freya away.

When I next opened my eyes, the healer told me sadly, "I'm sorry, Luna. We failed to save the pup."

Just like that, I lost my very first pup.

I suddenly jerked awake, only then realizing that I had dreamt of losing my pup once again. Burrowing under the blanket, I curled up with my arms wrapped around my abdomen.

I had no idea how much time had passed before my bedroom door was abruptly shoved open.

"Ailara! Since you're home, why did you block our bond? Are you purposely trying to make me worry over you?" Lucian growled, his tone filled with fury and displeasure.

What he didn't know was that I hadn't been blocking him—that was simply a sign that our bond was slowly weakening.

I had to struggle to open my eyes. When I did, I spotted his tall, broad-shouldered figure standing in the doorway.

Behind him was Freya Barton, looking as frail and innocent as ever.

"Ailara, you don't look so good. Are you feeling unwell?" As Freya spoke, her eyes reddened. "This is all my fault. If it weren't for me being too weak, the Alpha wouldn't have left you behind to rescue me. I had the healer whip up a herbal remedy for you. Hurry up and drink it. Once you do, you'll feel much better."

Then, she came over with a bowl of herbal remedy before I even gave her permission to do so. The steam wafted over to me, and I immediately smelled the almost undetectable sting of wolfsbane mixed in it.

Was Freya actually trying to kill me?

I shoved her away from me, wanting to get as far away from that bowl of lethal poison as possible.

Although I hadn't used much force, Freya staggered back in an exaggerated motion and screamed. The bowl crashed to the floor, shattering.

Lucian immediately lunged forward to steady her. Glaring at me furiously, he bellowed, "Ailara Torren, are you done throwing a tantrum? Freya had that made for you out of the kindness of her heart! What the hell is with that attitude?"

Before I could tell him to smell the spilled liquid, Freya interjected just in time.

"Forget it, Alpha. It's my fault for having such a frail body and taking up so much of your attention. It's only normal that Ailara would be mad at me."

That had Lucian instantly forgetting all about berating me. He looked down and gently comforted the crying Freya. "No, Ailara is just being too petty. This isn't your fault at all."

Rendered speechless, I lost the desire to explain.

I could already predict what would happen if I even tried. All it would take was Freya innocently saying that she hadn't been aware the remedy contained wolfsbane, and Lucian would instantly believe her. He would then turn on me and accuse me of making a huge fuss out of nothing.

After all, the same thing had already happened many times before.

I turned on my side, not wanting to waste any more time and energy on them.

"Get out. I'm tired and want to sleep."

Freya's sobbing grew louder at that, which prompted Lucian to continue comforting her softly. "Ignore her. I've indulged Ailara too much over the years, so she's become spoiled and inconsiderate."

A moment later, my bedroom door clicked shut before the sound of footsteps faded away.

When Lucian finally returned, he ordered me, "You have to apologize to Freya."

Ailara's POVBut fate had other plans. That day, after brewing a remedy for the Alpha of a small pack, I stepped outside and found Lucian standing there. He looked gaunt and haggard, his once-straight posture slumped as though something had weighed him down. His eyes were bloodshot, and he looked nothing like the proud, confident Alpha Lucian I had once known. Lucian stood a short distance away, hesitating. He didn't dare come any closer to me. I didn't bother speaking to him, either. Without so much as a glance, I turned and walked away. Lucian hurried after me and caught up. Still, he didn't dare touch me. He hesitated for a while before finally speaking, his voice trembling. "Ailara… It's been three years. I finally found you."For a moment, I found myself lost in thought. Had it really been that long?"How's Freya?" I asked. By now, she had probably gotten what she'd always wanted and become Luna.Pain flashed in Lucian's eyes as he pleaded, "Ailara, please, don't

Ailara's POVOnce I settled down in Morington, life fell into a quiet rhythm. Every day, I did little more than visit Hazel Thornfield, the healer, and work on restoring my wolf. When my final treatment was over, Hazel stopped me. "Ailara, your wolf is healthy now, but you're still wasting away inside. Whatever happened in the past, you still need to figure out where you want to go from here."It was something I had never even considered. Lucian and I had grown up together, and from an early age, I had known I'd one day become his Luna. All I had to do was help the Alpha lead the pack. I had never stopped to ask myself what I wanted. After I left the pack, I felt lost, like a traveler wandering through fog with no idea which way to turn. Hazel sighed when she saw me like that. Then, she said, "If you'd like, you can learn from me. Healers are needed throughout the neutral territories. Once you're trained, you could become a healer yourself."Until then, becoming a healer had

Third-Person POVAll at once, Lucian snapped. He stormed into the Luna's quarters and dragged Freya out. Moments ago, she had been dreaming of becoming the true Luna. Freya was visibly shaken, but she still kept up her helpless act. "What happened, Alpha Lucian? Is Ailara back? Is she mad at me? I can apologize to her. Please, calm down.""Shut up!" Lucian roared. He threw her to the floor, and his eyes blazed with fury. "An apology isn't enough. You deserve to die for what you've done! "You got Ethan killed, and you incited a riot that killed my pup! You're a monster! You deserve to be cursed by the Moon Goddess!"Lucian threw the evidence in Freya's face. Freya opened her mouth to defend herself, but the moment she saw what was on the papers, she froze. She knew everything she had done had come to light. If that was the case, there was no point keeping up the act anymore. Freya got to her feet before dusting herself off. She sneered and said, "I admit I started the riot.

Third-Person POVLucian stumbled back to the house and rushed into the Luna's quarters, only to be met by a scent that wasn't Ailara's. That was when he remembered he'd assigned the room to Freya. His face went deathly pale as he staggered toward the guest room. He pushed the door open and found that the room was empty. Every trace of Ailara was gone. Then, Lucian remembered something else. He rushed to the storage room, searching for the framed photograph Ailara had told him about. But the moment he saw what was inside, he froze in the doorway, unable to take another step. In the dim storage room, the huge framed photograph stood in the corner. However, Ailara's half had been cut away, leaving only Lucian in his formal attire. Memories came rushing back. Ailara and Lucian had taken the photograph during their marking ceremony. That day, they'd sworn never to betray each other. If either of them ever betrayed the other, they would cut the photograph in two and never see

Third-Person POVMeanwhile, at the Lunar Palace, Lucian felt the mate bond snap. He staggered and grabbed the back of a chair. Pain surged through him, so intense it felt as though his body were being torn apart. "Ailara…"Her name escaped his lips before he could stop himself. Sensing something was wrong, Freya hurried over to steady him. "Alpha Lucian, what's wrong? Are you not feeling well?" she asked, feigning concern. Lucian stared at the doorway, yet Ailara was no longer there. He had never felt this anxious before. "My mate bond with Ailara… It's been severed."A hint of delight flashed in Freya's eyes, but she quickly bit her lip. Tears welled up in her eyes as she grabbed Lucian's sleeve. "It's all my fault. If I hadn't accidentally gotten Ailara's dress dirty, she wouldn't have lost it. But she's being unreasonable. How could she sever her mate bond with you over something so trivial?"Lucian clenched his fists. When he spoke, his voice came out strained. The ca

Ailara's POVSeveral days later, to celebrate the pack not losing anyone during the berserk outbreak on the night of the full moon, the pack threw a grand feast. As the Alpha and Luna of the pack, Lucian and I had to attend together. However, once I had changed into my gown, I suddenly received a message from him."Why is it that I can't seem to sense you over the mate bond and can only contact you using my phone?"Anyway, after what happened with the Gamma warriors the other day, Freya is utterly terrified to face them alone. I have to accompany her, so you can just head inside yourself."There were no more messages after that. It seemed like Lucian didn't even care why he couldn't seem to feel our mate bond.I stared at my reflection in the mirror, noting the unhealthy pallor to my skin, and found this all so laughable.During that terrible night, my pup was the only one who died. Yet, no one seemed to care about that, nor did they wonder just what sort of suffering I was curr
