Chapter 1

Kate Barker tossed two marriage certificates in front of me.

"Martin and I got married abroad. The only thing left is the wedding. Haven't you harassed me enough over the last three years?"

Seeing the names on the certificates stung my eyes.

Kate and I had a wedding, but we never actually signed the papers to make it legal. She smirked at my stunned expression, looking totally smug and in control.

"I've already had Martin move in. To be honest with you, the only reason I married him is that I'm pregnant with his child.

"If you have any self-respect, you'll explain everything to my mom. And if you continue to pester me, I won't hesitate to break your other leg," she spat as her gaze swept over my right leg.

My broken leg had been left untreated for seven days now. It had gone from agonizing pain to being completely numb.

Shutting my eyes, I rasped, "Okay."

She clearly hadn't expected me to agree so readily. A flicker of surprise crossed her eyes.

"I'll move into the guest room. Since he's the baby's biological father, it makes more sense for him to have the master bedroom and take care of you."

I meant every word.

A week ago, she had gone around announcing her pregnancy to everyone and made sure they all knew the baby wasn't mine.

I turned into the butt of everyone's jokes. Even after three years, I still hadn't won her heart.

"Don't worry. I'll explain everything to your mom, and I won't bother you anymore."

Kate furrowed her brow, her eyes filled with doubt, though it quickly disappeared right after.

"You'd better not be trying to pull something. I told the household staff to take some time off, so there's no need for you to move into the guest room."

She paused, a smirk playing on her lips.

"I need someone to wait on me because of the baby. From now on, you'll be at my beck and call."

Kate spoke matter-of-factly. She then waited for my reaction with a cruel glint of amusement in her eyes.

I opened my mouth, but in the end, I merely gave a slight nod.

Having lost interest, Kate glanced at my right leg before calling the family doctor over.

When the medical staff saw the state of my leg, they looked horrified. The wound had been untreated for so long that it had already begun to fester.

The people Kate had sent had put me through unimaginable torture. They had even hammered nails into my bones.

Even the family doctor looked shaken.

"I highly recommend taking Mr. Cross to a major hospital for this. If it's as bad as it looks, his leg might need to be amputated."

My hands clenched into fists at my sides. But Kate, standing beside me, couldn't have cared less.

"What a joke. A grown man gets a little hurt, and suddenly he needs an amputation? He might as well be dead."

With a scoff, she walked back to the bedroom.

"And don't think looking like that is going to make me feel sorry for you. Even if you dropped dead right now, I still wouldn't forgive you."

She didn't close the door all the way. Martin Galvan was already inside, and it wasn't long before I heard their laughter followed by the unmistakable sounds of them making out.

Hearing the resolve in my voice, Margaret could only grit her teeth and agree to take Kate back. When I returned to the hospital room, Kate's eyes lit up the moment she saw me. "I thought you had left."I said nothing and simply looked at her calmly. She choked back a sob. "I was raised entirely by my mom. Her ridiculous standards and impossible expectations suffocated me."I only started dating because I wanted to escape her control. I hated you because you stood with her and forced me into a marriage I never wanted."I already knew all of this. When we were kids, Margaret was incredibly strict with her. If Kate didn't nail a dance routine, she'd be made to stand in a corner with no dinner. If her grades slipped, she'd get a brutal beating. And every single time she felt wronged, she'd come running to me, sobbing in my arms. I used to be her safe haven.I rolled up my sleeve, revealing a mess of scars. The first time was the day she brought Martin home. Just because I made a si

"No. My mom didn't say anything… I found you myself. I've been looking for you for a long time."She choked back her sobs, unable to say anything else. Before I could even speak, Kate suddenly whipped out a knife and started slashing wildly at her own stomach. Blood pooled on the floor in an instant, leaving me completely frozen in shock."Neil, I was wrong. I tormented you before because I hated you for taking away my freedom, but now I can't live without you. Will you please come back with me?"Kate's deranged behavior sent my heart racing. I immediately called an ambulance and rushed her to the hospital. The entire way there, she kept screaming my name.Because of the way Margaret had raised her, Kate had developed a rather obsessive personality. But I never in a million years thought she'd actually stab herself. In the end, the baby couldn't be saved. The doctors said Kate had injured herself too severely, so it would be incredibly difficult for her to ever get pregnant agai

After living abroad for more than half a year, I thought my life would continue to be peaceful like this. But then, out of nowhere, Margaret called me from abroad. She sounded somewhat anxious as she said, "Neil, Kate wants to see you…"I froze for a second, then flatly turned her down. "Mrs. Barker, didn't we agree that you would keep her away from me?""I know that's what I said, but I never thought she'd threaten me with suicide. I offered Martin a large sum of money, and he abandoned Kate without a second thought. "When Kate couldn't find him and came to confront me, I told her everything about our wager. Now she's become obsessed with seeing you. I don't know what else to do…"Margaret sounded helpless as she kept trying to persuade me. "Neil, over these past three years, I've come to see you as my real son-in-law. As soon as the Pruitt family learned about Kate's divorce, they came knocking on our door."They don't care whether Kate has been married or pregnant. They simpl

Kate appeared flustered, her anxious gaze shifting between Margaret and me."Kate, if he wants to leave, let him," Martin said. "Haven't you always hated him anyway? There's no need to worry. I will never abandon you! And I won't let you marry into the Pruitt family."Seeing how distressed Kate was, he quickly raised his hand to swear. And yet, Kate didn't even spare him a glance. Her eyes were still glued to me, like she was trying to drill a hole through my head with her piercing gaze."We've known each other for over 20 years. Even if we're cutting ties, you don't have to leave. I'll buy you a house as compensation…"Her words almost made me laugh. With a smile, I said, "Don't bother."My coldness made her swallow the rest of her words. She pressed her lips together, still unwilling to give up."If you walk out that door, you'll never see me again! You know my mom never goes back on her word. You'll never be able to return!"You'd better not regret this. It's no skin off my

"What wager? What agreement? Mom, what are you talking about?" Kate asked. She snapped her head up and unconsciously let go of Martin's hand.As if she couldn't understand Margaret's words, she turned her gaze to me. "Neil, what kind of wager did you make with my mom?"I looked away, refusing to answer. Margaret stepped between us, blocking Kate's view of me. She looked at Kate with a pained expression."Your marriage was arranged long ago," she said. "You were supposed to marry the youngest son of the Pruitt family. If Neil hadn't stepped in back then, you would've already been his wife."But it's not too late. I've already reached an agreement with the Pruitt family. I won't continue indulging your behavior any longer!"Kate's lips trembled slightly. She looked completely stunned by the news. "Mom, you're actually making me marry that cripple from the Pruitt family? I'm your daughter, not some piece of property you can just sell off!"She whipped her head back toward me, her vo

Only after Kate came back to her senses did the scissors slip from her grasp and fall to the floor.Kate staggered backward, and Martin immediately rushed over to steady her.She wiped the tears from her face. "Neil, can you please stop loving me? Just let me go. I'll make sure you see for yourself how happy Martin and I can be together."With Martin supporting her, she walked away. Kate's words hurt far more than the scissors ever could. They burrowed into me an inch at a time.Kate's idea of "happiness" was spending tens of millions of dollars to put Martin in the spotlight. She bribed journalists and media outlets, making sure every gossip rag and social media feed was flooded with news of their perfect romance. It was like she was showing off a prized possession she'd kept hidden for years. She even threw a massive party at the house and introduced Martin to all her business partners. Those were all things I could never have even dreamed of having. But even as everything un
