LOGINLYRA’s POV
The sky was somewhere between purple and gold. The cool breeze against my skin and the birds humming above me. Something about this place made me feel a little better. Just a little. It would have been more than a little, but the memories that this place brought were bitter-sweet because I had discovered this place with Kade. We liked going for walks and one day, we had decided to try a different route and voila, we found this street. There was something magical about the street that made me come here whenever I felt bad. I liked how it was quiet enough to hear my thoughts. Then, it seemed like we were the only ones who knew of this street. Now, hoped I was the only one who knew. Thankfully, Kade was Kade. He definitely forgot about the place. I shook my head. I came here because Conan hurt me. Kade should not be the one on my mind. Conan should. Not like I wanted to think of him, but it was weird thinking about an ex of years after breaking things up with a fiance. Maybe coming back to this pack was not a very good idea. My two heart breaks happened in this pack. This very same pack. I heaved a sigh of frustration, sobering if I was overreacting for leaving Conan. I frowned at the thought. It was definitely not an overreaction. He was getting married to another woman. He was making me a second choice. He wanted me to share him with someone else and I definitely was not used to sharing things. I mean, I was my parents’ only daughter. The top of the icing was him calling him less. My father as a Beta was far more respectable than his who was an Alpha. That was how big this pack of heart break was. ‘ How dare he call me less. At that moment, I felt something. I felt someone’s eyes on me. It was a strange feeling but I could actually feel someone watching me. Someone else must have found this street? I turned to look, but there was no one around. Just trees around the one I was sitted under. “Maybe I was overthinking,” I muttered to myself and sat back down, but the feeling was still there. Then, I heard rattling against the dry leaves everywhere. Someone was definitely here. I stood up on my foot and looked around. “Who is here?” No answer. I took another look and since everywhere was silent, I decided to sit down. I sat still, anticipating and immediately, I turned back. Boom. I saw Kade. He was behind the tree behind mine the whole time. Caught red handed, he froze, then he raised his hands up in surrender. “What are you doing here?” I was annoyed. A part of me was relieved and I wondered why. What was relieving about seeing Kade here? He had a smile on his face. “You remembered this place?” I glared at him. “What do I have to remember about this place? What are you doing here?” His face fell. “Like you. I come here whenever I’m sad, remember?” “The last time I saw you, you looked overjoyed.” I sounded bitter. A small smile appeared on his face. “We both know that it was not in a bad way.” I rolled my eyes and looked away. He joined me under my tree. “You deserve much better than Conan.” I snorted. “You deserved much better than what I gave you when we were…” “Can we please not talk about that?” He nodded. Seconds passed. Minutes passed. Hours passed and we said nothing to each other. We just had our thoughts to ourselves. It made me wonder what was going on in his head. Something bad must have happened to him. I frowned. Not like I should care. “What are you thinking?” I asked anyway. “I’m thinking of banning arranged marriages.” “Please do, so the sweet she-wolf that is arranged for Tim can escape? She deserves much better. I cannot imagine her with Timren. Tim is a bigger jerk than you are.” “Tim would be happy if I do so. He does not want the arranged marriage, remember? Your parents are the one forcing it on him.” His voice went quiet. “I wonder why they do so.” “Yours is forcing a she-wolf on you?” I asked. I shook my head. “Poor girl. You should definitely ban arranged marriages. We cannot have two victims.” He nodded, a smirk on his face. “You’re right. Then, I can get married to who I really want.” “You’re thinking of getting married? No she-wolf deserves such punishment.” Kade laughed. I hated the way his face lit up. I hated the way it made me feel rather. “Punishment? You’re definitely the only she-wolf alive who thinks marrying me is punishment.” Without saying anything in reply, I stood on my feet to leave. Kade stood up too and I frowned at him. “Are you thinking of following me?” He stood so close that our face almost touched. I should have stepped back but I just could not. I wanted to do the opposite so badly. I had to remind myself of how badly he had treated me back then. What made me think he would treat me differently now? He was acting nice just so he could put me in the position that I had once left. I was definitely not letting him do that. He took a step forward and I felt every single strength I had left leave. “Do you want me to leave?” He asked, his eyes on mine. They were getting darker by the second. His hands snuck up around my waist. This was definitely not a fair game. I swallowed. “If you want me to leave without following you, I will do so,” he added. “Just tell me if you want me to leave.” The right answer was yes. He should be nowhere near me. “No. Please, don’t leave.”Later that day, I was called to the throne room. There, I met Torren, a few Elders, Tim and Alpha Kade.In sighting the stern faces Torren and the elders present, I knew that I was in trouble. The coward had reported what I had done to him. I raised my head up high. Torren had done worse. They had to punish him for the warriors he had injured and killed ‘accidentally.’I bowed my head in greeting to the Alpga, Beta Tim and the elders, acting like Torren did not exist in the room.“There she is. She made mockery of a warrior. This is why she wolves should not be warriors.”Tim scoffed. “All I heard from the story was that she whooped your ass and now you are whining like the brat that you are.”Torren made a fist but he dared not say a word to the Beta. “My Alpha, she should be punished heavily for what she did to Torren. She disrespected someone that would possibly be the head of warriors tomorrow. She should he punished for humiliating someone the masses see as a hero. Torren is one
Everybody’s attention were on us now. It was always that way whenever Torren wanted to spar with someone. They all expected a particular end and they definitely did not what to miss it.I smirked. Have they all forgotten that I had the Beta’s blood running through my veins? Betas were almost as strong as Alphas. And that I had trained alongside their Alpha when I was much younger. “Torren, are you seriously underestimating me?” I laughed. Was he trying to underestimate me just because of my gender?“Is that a yes?” He asked and then smirked. “Be careful with the option you pick. Your bodyguards are not here to protect you. Nepotism will not work when it comes down to actual strength.”I smirked. Well he should try telling that to the Alphas and Betas of packs. When it comes to strength, one’s family line plays a good part. They were other aspects though.“Of course. I will never miss whooping your proud ass for anything in the world.”“You have to give me your word though. That your b
LYRA’s POVIn no time, Alpha Kade’s court began to feel like home. Tim and I barely went home because I was interested in becoming one of the pack warriors. At first glance, one would think that I was doing so to get closer to Alpha Kade. Well, maybe a tiny part of me was doing so but I genuinely want to serve the pack.Initially, I was a bit hesitant, especially after Selene’s threats. I knew she was going to be a major problem but for the last few days, there had been no sign of any form of shenanigans from her. My daily activities were simple; have breakfast with Alpha Kade, my brother and even Selene, go to the training grounds to train with the other warriors and then back to my room. Every once in a while, Alpha Kade and I cross each other’s part and most of the time, we engage in a small awkward conversation and then go our separate ways. My face fell at the thought of how our relationship has been so far. I heaved a sigh. I probably just have to wait. Things might get better
SELENE’s POVThat night, I did not sleep. I was too angry to do so and without informing anybody, I left my chambers. The guards did not stop me. They dared not. The path I took was narrow and hidden. It led away from the main court and into the older part of the land. The hut stood where it always had. The smell of herbs and ash clinging to the air. I only had to knock once and the door opened slowly.“You’re late,” the woman inside said.I stepped in. “You should be grateful I came at all.”She smiled faintly. “I knew you would.”The door shut behind me.The room was dim. Candles lined the walls and bones hung from strings. I had stood here before. In fact, I had stood here too many times. “You said it would work,” I said immediately. She turned her back to me and poured something into a cup. “I said it would last.”“It is not lasting,” I snapped. She faced me. “Define lasting.”“My son looked at her today,” I said. “And he froze.”She raised a brow. “That does not mean he remembe
I woke up feeling unsettled. It was not the kind of feeling that fades when you stretch or turn to the other side of the bed. It sat heavy in my chest, steady and quiet, like a warning I could not name. The court felt different. It was oddly quiet. When I stepped out of my room, the hallway was already awake. Servants moved about with lowered voices. Guards stood straighter when they saw me. No one blocked my path. No one sneered. No one whispered insults loud enough for me to hear. That alone made my skin crawl. This place had never been gentle with me. I walked slowly, taking everything in.Elena was gone. Her presence used to cling to the walls. By now, I should have heard her barking commands and giving me hateful looks. Now there was nothing. No sign that she had ever existed here.Selene was gone too.Since the gathering, no one had seen her. No sharp looks. No calculated smiles. No cold instructions whispered into the ears of the court. And the wolves. They looked at me differe
I sat on the Alpha seat and felt nothing. The hall was too quiet. Everything looked the way it always had, yet it felt wrong. Like the walls were watching me. Like they were waiting for me to say something and I did not know what.“Why is she still here?” I swayed my mother, referring to Elena. The warriors standing at the edges of the hall stiffened. No one answered. They did not need to.She stood near the pillar, dressed in white, her hair perfectly arranged, her eyes soft and hopeful. She smiled when she saw me looking.“My Alpha,” she said gently. “You called for court. I thought I should be present.”I clenched my jaw.“I did not,” I replied. “I called my council. You are not part of it.”Her smile faltered. Before she could speak again, my mother’s voice filled the hall.“Kade,” Selene said calmly as she stepped forward. “You are being rude.”I turned to her slowly.“You invited her,” I said.Selene sighed like I was a child throwing a tantrum. “She is your future Luna. Her pre
