Chapter 2

مؤلف: Tea Everywhere
Rebecca's POV

I froze, staring at Enzo in disbelief. My very brother had known about this all along and helped them keep it a secret from me!

Enzo glanced at me, clearly guilty. But that flicker of guilt vanished almost immediately before he was back to his usual cheerful self. He pulled a freshly made box of chocolates from his bag and handed it to Jacopo.

"I knew you'd come today, so I made you some in advance," he told him, then turned to me. "Come on, Rebecca. Jacopo's adorable, and he's got great genes. You should be grateful you get to have a son like him."

I should be grateful? I let out a cold laugh.

After our parents passed away, I was only 15 when I took on the burden of raising Enzo.

I had always told myself that he was the only family I had left. No matter how hard things got or how exhausted I was, I had never once complained to him.

Instead, I had always given him the best of everything I had. Yet now, he was telling me to accept my fiance's infidelity and help raise his bastard child.

My phone buzzed. Nathan Rinaldi had sent another text.

"I've arranged a room for you. Do you have any other family members who'll be coming with you? They're welcome to stay, too."

"No. I'm an orphan."

After sending the reply, I glanced at Enzo one last time. If he wasn't going to stand by my side, I no longer wanted him as my brother.

I stood up to leave, but Niccolo stepped in front of me and blocked my way. "What is this supposed to mean? You're throwing a fit over something this trivial? Who exactly are you trying to give attitude to?

"Our whole family thought you were sensible and understanding. Looks like we were wrong about you. You know Papa's still recovering, yet you still picked a fight with him on Christmas Eve."

I stared at Niccolo in disbelief. "I picked a fight with him?"

He pinched the bridge of his nose. "So what if I gave Margherita a child? Is that really worth making a big deal over? Margherita has no intention of getting married. She's not a threat to your position, so what exactly are you worried about?

"Besides, we're getting our marriage license in three days. After that, I'll be yours and yours alone. You won't even have to go through pregnancy and childbirth. You practically get a son for free. What's so bad about that?"

I slowly looked around the living room at everyone present.

The man I had loved for six years, his parents, who had always treated me like their own daughter, and my younger brother, whom I had raised myself, had all conspired to hide something this huge from me.

Now that the truth was out, not one of them seemed the least bit guilty.

All they felt was irritation and anger—irritated that I wasn't happily accepting their arrangement, and angry that I had dared to show even the slightest bit of displeasure.

I sighed deeply. Watching them laugh and enjoy each other's company, I just wanted to get away. I didn't belong with these people.

Forcing a smile, I said, "Jacopo is adorable, but he's not my child. Enjoy your Christmas Eve. I'll be going now."

As soon as I turned, Niccolo shouted, "Stop right there!"

Ivano slammed his hand against the table again, even harder than before. "Let her go! You've spoiled her rotten, Niccolo. Look at the nerve she has to throw a tantrum on a night like this!"

Niccolo still came after me. He grabbed my wrist, but I wrenched my hand free. Suddenly, Jacopo came running up behind me and started pounding on me with his little fists.

"Bad lady! You're picking on my papa!"

I instinctively moved out of the way. He missed me, lost his balance, and fell to the floor. In an instant, the living room erupted into chaos.

"He's just a three-year-old child!" Niccolo barked at me. "How could you do this to him?"

Margherita ran over and scooped Jack into her arms. Tears streamed down her face. "If you're upset, take it out on me! Leave my child out of this!"

Ivano was shaking with rage. "Get out! Get out of my house now! I must've been blind to let Niccolo marry you!"

Anna hurried to his side, trying to calm him down. Even Enzo, of all people, joined in. "Rebecca, what you just did was downright monstrous!"

I stood there in a daze. The only words I could manage were, "I didn't…"

Before I could finish, Margherita kicked me hard enough to knock me to the floor. Caught completely off guard, I fell onto my knees, scraping the skin raw.

She glared down at me and screamed, "You didn't? Are you telling me a child this young would make up something like that?"

Rebecca's POVAfter the Invernizzi family's last casino was shut down, the family could barely keep up with its day-to-day expenses. With no other options, Niccolo had to disband his men.The once-struggling small family was now completely ruined by its Don. Even their only home was seized to pay off their debts.Niccolo still found me in the end.I had just finished settling a dispute within the Rinaldi family and was about to head home to pack my bags. Nathan and I were leaving for a vacation the next day. That was when he showed up.Niccolo blocked my way home. He looked as though he hadn't showered in days. His beard had grown long and scraggly, with dark circles beneath his eyes. He looked almost lifeless."Rebecca, I messed up."Seeing the once-arrogant Don reduced to such a pathetic state, I couldn't help finding the situation rather amusing.I folded my arms and looked at him steadily. "Oh? And what exactly did our esteemed Don do wrong?"My tone caught him off guard,

Third-Person POVNiccolo gave Ivano the medication and called in a doctor to examine him. Alas, no miracle happened. The doctor explained that because Ivano had gone without the medication for too long, most of his nerves had already suffered irreversible damage. He might regain some function with time and probably speak again without much difficulty, but walking normally like he used to was no longer possible.Anna flew into a rage. "I worked myself to the bone taking care of him all this time, and you're telling me I'll have to keep doing it after this? If he can't be cured, what the hell did I hire you for?"The more she thought about it, the angrier she became. When Rebecca Gallo had been in charge of Ivano's care, there had never been this much trouble. She kicked over the stool beside her. "Call Rebecca right now and get her back here! All Margherita does is spend your money and throw it around, using her title as Donna to show off everywhere."Once she comes home, you're

Rebecca's POVI suddenly regretted answering the call. My fingers tightened around the phone until my knuckles turned white.Fighting back the tremor in my voice, I slowly piped up. "Last time I checked, you're still my brother. Instead of standing by your sister, you're siding with an outsider and cursing me out. I've wasted all those years raising you."He ignored everything I said and continued barking, "What gives you the right to cut off Ivano's medication without warning? You know damn well that it'll cost him his life! What you're doing is no different from murder!"I scoffed. "If I hadn't taken such good care of him and pulled strings to get him the medication he needed, he wouldn't have had a chance of getting back on his feet over the past three years!"All I'm doing now is refusing to give him special treatment anymore. If he wants the special medication, he can buy it himself."As my brother, you helped Niccolo cover up his affair and hide the fact that he'd had a thr

Rebecca's POVNathan took me back to his home. He showed me all the resources he had promised me, one by one. The Rinaldi family was far more powerful than I had imagined.Compared to their assets, the resources I had brought with me seemed almost insignificant. Ironically, those resources already accounted for more than half of the Invernizzi family's entire fortune.Just as I was about to start organizing my assets, Niccolo called. I stared at his name on my phone and didn't answer.Nathan glanced at the screen and said, "You can answer if you want to, so long as it helps you get closure."I declined the call and blocked Niccolo without a second thought. Still, he was persistent. He called me from seven different numbers in a row. In the end, I had no choice but to answer. The moment the call connected, Niccolo's furious roar blasted through the speaker."Rebecca, why the hell would you stop Papa's medication? That medicine is a specialized treatment for paralysis! Not even mo

Rebecca's POVNathan got out of the car and walked over, pulling me into his arms.He swept his gaze over the crowd and said calmly, "You came from nothing but some second-rate family, and you think you can tell my wife to get lost?""Your wife?"Niccolo was confused. He repeated the word under his breath, then seemed to have finally processed what Nathan had said. His expression darkened with anger."I dare you to say that again."Nathan had already taken out our marriage certificate. He held it up for everyone to see. "I'm her lawfully wedded husband."Niccolo's face went pale. Even Margherita was too stunned to speak.Meanwhile, the crowd gathered around us grew larger by the second.Niccolo looked at me in disbelief. "Rebecca, you're my girlfriend. How could you marry another man? Have you no shame?"Margherita quickly jumped in. "What you're doing is cheating! You were still Niccolo's girlfriend when you married another man!"Everyone, look at this! She's getting marrie

Rebecca's POVNiccolo sounded surprised. "You don't? Aren't you upset?"I smiled. "You make a good point. This will help build the child's confidence. It really is what's best for him."He sighed in relief. "I'm glad you understand. We'll still have our wedding together, just as planned. As far as outsiders are concerned, you're the only woman who'll ever be the Donna. It doesn't matter whose name is on the marriage certificate."I finally made it home and settled comfortably onto the couch, listening as he continued."And one more thing. Jacopo says he wants to be my only child. I've thought about it, and honestly, that might be for the best. It'll save us from inheritance disputes down the road, and you won't have to go through the pain of childbirth."From now on, just treat Jacopo as your own son. He's a smart kid. We'll leave our empire to him, and I'm sure he'll double its value one day."I gave a scornful smile, though unfortunately, he couldn't see it.More than half of
