Maelis’ POV
“Move faster, Maelis.”
Cassandra’s voice reached me before I even stepped through the towering gates of Alpha Academy.
I tightened my grip around the two heavy suitcases in my hands and hurried after her.
The handles dug painfully into my palms, but I didn’t complain.
I had learned a long time ago that complaining never changed anything.
Cassandra continued walking ahead of me, her golden hair shining under the morning sunlight. She looked exactly like what everyone believed her to be the perfect daughter of the Alpha and Luna, the future pride of our pack.
She belonged here, I was only here because of her
“If we miss registration because of you, don’t expect me to forgive you,” she said without looking back.
“I’m coming,” I replied quietly.
She sighed in annoyance. “You always say that.”
I lowered my eyes and followed, that was something I was good at, following.
The moment I stepped into Alpha Academy, I understood why every young wolf dreamed of coming here.
The academy was breathtaking.
Ancient stone buildings surrounded the enormous courtyard, their walls covered with vines that had grown for hundreds of years. Training grounds stretched across the land, filled with young wolves practicing their skills, while banners representing different packs moved with the wind.
This was where future Alphas, warriors, healers, and leaders were trained.
For many wolves, receiving an admission letter from this place was a dream come true.
Parents stood beside their children, fixing their uniforms and giving them words of encouragement before letting them go. “Make us proud.”
“You can do this.”
“We believe in you.”
The words followed me as I walked through the crowd.
I watched a young wolf hug her mother before heading toward registration with a smile on her face.
For a moment, I wished I knew what that felt like.
To have someone look at me and tell me they were proud but no one had said those words to me.
The Alpha and Luna only gave me instructions.
Protect Cassandra, stay close to Cassandra, make sure nothing happens to Cassandra.
That was why I was here, not because they believed in my dreams, not because they wanted me to experience this new beginning but since Cassandra was here.
Ever since they adopted me after my parents died, I had understood my place.
The pack believed I was lucky. They saw the beautiful clothes I wore, the comfortable room I lived in, and the life the Alpha family had given me.
They thought I had gained a family but they never saw the difference.
The Alpha and Luna were never cruel to me.
They gave me a home, but they never gave me their hearts.
That place had always belonged to Cassandra
“Maelis.” I looked up.
Cassandra stood near the registration tables, staring at me. “What are you doing?”
I glanced around. “I was just looking.”
“You can admire the academy later. We have things to do.”
I swallowed the words I wanted to say. Arguing with Cassandra was useless. “I’m coming.”
I lifted Cassandra’s suitcases and followed behind her.
For a moment, I allowed myself to look around the academy.
So many students were here.
A small part of me wondered if this could be my chance to become someone other than Cassandra’s protector but that thought disappeared the moment I heard a sudden shout.
“Watch out!”
I turned toward the training field.
A wooden staff flew through the air.
One of the students had lost control of his weapon, and it was spinning directly toward the crowd.
My eyes widened.
Cassandra was standing in its path.
She didn’t see it.
She didn’t know.
“Cassandra!”
I dropped the suitcases and moved before I could even think.
My hands pushed against her shoulders, forcing her out of the way just as the staff crashed into my side.
Pain exploded through my ribs, I fell hard onto the stone ground.
For several seconds, I couldn’t breathe.
I slowly pushed myself up, my ribs burned with every movement.
I looked toward Cassandra. For a moment, I expected her to reach out her hand.
To ask if I was okay. Instead, she only looked at me.
Good.” Cassandra looked at me without a trace of concern. “At least you remembered why Father sent you here.”
She turned away and walked toward registration, I stared after her.
The pain in my ribs hurt but somehow, those words hurt more.
I forced myself to stand and picked up her suitcases again.
That was my role, to protect Cassandra.
No matter what happened to me.
As I lifted the suitcase, something warm ran down my hand.
I looked down.
The fall had reopened the cut on my knuckle.
A drop of blood slipped from my finger.
It landed on one of the ancient white stones beneath my feet.
The moment it touched the ground…
Something changed, alow growl echoed inside my head.I froze.
My entire body went tense, the world became sharper again.
I clenched my fists. No, I couldn’t lose control here, I won’t let Cassandra this, No… she wouldn’t like it
Slowly, I forced the feeling back.
The strange power disappeared but the blood remained and someone had noticed. “…Blood.”
I turned.
A young man stood several steps away from me.
He wore the same academy uniform as the other students, but there was something different about him.
The crowd seemed to naturally move away from him.
He was tall, confident, and his golden eyes were fixed on the drop of blood on the stone.
Then he looked at me.
For a moment, everything around us disappeared.
The noise of the academy faded.
The students walking past became nothing but shadows.
His eyes searched my face like he was looking at someone from a forgotten memory. “This blood…”
His voice was barely a whisper.
His eyes remained fixed on me, as if he had just discovered something impossible.
I didn’t know who he was or why he was looking at me like that.
But one thing was certain.
I couldn’t let Cassandra find out.
Because if she knew what was happening to me…
I would lose the only place I had ever called home.
Chapter Five – After HoursMaelis’ POVThe academy was quieter after sunset. The loud voices that had filled the training grounds during the day had faded, replaced by the gentle sound of the evening wind moving through the tall trees surrounding the campus.Students had already returned to their dormitories. Some were laughing with their roommates, while others were preparing for the next day’s lessons.I wished I could do the same.Instead, I sat alone on the edge of my bed, staring at my bandaged hand.Everything had changed in a single day.Yesterday, no one knew my name.Today, everyone knew I was the girl who had almost lost control of her wolf.A slow sigh escaped my lips.I glanced across the room.Cassandra stood in front of the mirror, carefully brushing her long hair. She hummed softly to herself as though nothing had happened between us.The silence in the room felt uncomfortable.I wanted to speak.I wanted to explain myself again. But every time I remembered the look in
Chapter Four – The Price of a SecretMaelis’ POVBy the time I managed to calm my wolf, the combat hall had almost emptied. The instructors had dismissed the other students, but the whispers followed them as they left.Every pair of eyes that looked at me carried the same question.Who was I?I wished I knew the answer myself. My body still felt weak. The struggle to force my wolf back had drained every bit of strength I had.I sat quietly on one of the wooden benches near the edge of the training hall, staring at the scrape across my hand. The fall had torn the skin across my knuckles.Tiny drops of blood still stained my fingers.“Hold still.” I looked up. Jace stood in front of me with a small wooden first-aid box in his hands, before it was Silas, now Jace one of the alpha… Why are they helping me? “When did you get that?” I asked. He smiled. “I stole it.”My eyes widened, he laughed.“I’m kidding. The healer gave it to me before running off to treat someone who actually knows ho
Chapter Three – The AwakeningMaelis’ POVThe moment Silas pointed at me, the entire combat hall went silent. For a few seconds, I could only stare at him.Me?Out of everyone in the room, he had chosen me.A nervous laugh almost escaped my lips because it felt impossible. There were students here who had spent their entire lives training. Students from powerful packs. Students who already knew how to control their wolves and fight like warriors.I was only here because Cassandra needed someone beside her.I was not someone people chose.Whispers immediately began spreading around the hall. “Her?” “Who is she?” “Why would Silas choose her?”I lowered my eyes, I hated being the center of attention. Before I could move, Cassandra stepped forward. “She’s the one my father adopted.”Her voice carried across the room. Everyone turned toward her.Cassandra stood with her usual confidence, her arms crossed as she looked at me. “She isn’t trained like the others.”The words were not loud, but
Chapter Two – The First ClassMaelis’ POVCassandra spent more time preparing for combat class than she had spent preparing for registration. She stood in front of the mirror, adjusting her hair and checking her reflection from every angle while I sat quietly on the edge of the bed, fastening the buttons of my academy uniform.“I heard Silas will be attending the first combat class,” she said.My hands paused for a moment. Silas.Even I had heard his name, everyone had.He was one of the strongest Alpha heirs at Alpha Academy, someone whose reputation had reached every pack long before he stepped through the academy gates.Cassandra smiled at her reflection. “I need to make a good impression.”I lowered my eyes and continued fixing my sleeves.Cassandra looked at me through the mirror. “You should try to look less ordinary.”I glanced at her.“I wasn’t trying.”She let out a small laugh. “That’s exactly the problem.”Her eyes moved over my plain uniform and simple appearance. “No matte
