Chapter 1

Elena had spent half her afternoon choosing the perfect anniversary gift for Adrian.

The platinum watch sat inside a small black box in her handbag, its back engraved with a sentence she had secretly chosen weeks ago: Three years, and I would still choose you.

She smiled as she stepped through the front door of the Ashford mansion, already imagining Adrian's reaction. He had promised to take her somewhere special that evening, and for once, Elena had allowed herself to believe that her husband was planning something romantic.

Then she heard a woman's laughter from upstairs.

Elena stopped.

The smile disappeared from her face.

The housekeeper, who had been arranging flowers in the foyer, suddenly looked nervous. "Mrs. Ashford, perhaps you should wait downstairs. Mr. Ashford said he didn't want to be disturbed."

"On our anniversary?"

"I... I believe he has someone with him."

Elena frowned. "Who?"

The woman lowered her eyes.

That was enough to make Elena's stomach tighten.

She walked upstairs.

The closer she got to Adrian's study, the clearer the voices became.

A woman's voice.

Then Adrian's.

"Vivian, you shouldn't have come here."

Elena's blood ran cold.

Vivian.

Her stepsister.

She pushed the door open.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Adrian stood beside his desk, his white shirt open at the collar. Vivian was sitting on the edge of the desk, wearing that same shirt.

Elena stared at them.

Then the anniversary gift slipped from her fingers and hit the floor.

Vivian was the first to speak.

"Elena..."

"Don't."

Elena's voice was surprisingly calm. "Don't say my name like you have any right to."

Adrian stepped forward. "Let me explain."

"Explain what?" She laughed bitterly. "That my husband is sleeping with my stepsister? I think the evidence is fairly convincing."

"Elena, this isn't—"

"How long?"

Adrian went silent.

She looked directly at him. "How long have you been cheating on me?"

Vivian looked away.

That tiny movement told Elena more than any confession could.

"Eight months," Adrian finally said.

Eight months.

Elena felt something inside her crack.

She looked at Vivian. "You knew I loved him."

"I didn't plan for this to happen."

"Eight months is a very long accident."

Vivian's expression changed. "You always had everything, Elena. The perfect daughter image, the perfect marriage, everyone's sympathy. Did you really think you deserved all of it?"

Elena stared at her.

"So this was never about love."

Vivian smiled faintly.

"Maybe it was about finally getting something that belonged to you."

Adrian interrupted, "Enough."

Elena turned toward him. "No. Let her finish."

Vivian stepped closer.

"You want the truth? Adrian never loved you the way you thought he did."

Elena's eyes moved to her husband.

"Is that true?"

Adrian didn't answer.

The silence was worse than a confession.

Elena looked down at the gift on the floor. She picked it up, walked over to Adrian, and placed it in his hand.

"Happy anniversary."

His expression shifted.

"Elena—"

"Keep it. You might as well have something to remember the three years you wasted."

She turned toward the door.

"Wait."

Adrian's voice stopped her.

He picked up a folder from the desk.

"We need to talk about the divorce."

Elena slowly turned around.

"Divorce?"

"I've already had the papers prepared."

She stared at him.

"How long have you been planning this?"

Adrian didn't answer.

Vivian did.

"Long enough."

Elena's gaze sharpened.

"Why?"

Adrian opened the folder and placed several documents on the desk.

"Because there's something else you need to understand."

Elena approached cautiously.

Her eyes fell on bank statements, contracts, and copies of financial transfers.

Her name was everywhere.

"What is this?"

"You'll be accused of embezzling from the company."

Elena's face went pale.

"I've never touched these accounts."

"The signatures say otherwise."

She looked at him in disbelief.

"You forged my signature?"

Adrian's expression remained cold.

"Think carefully before you make accusations."

Elena suddenly understood.

The affair was only the beginning.

They weren't just taking her husband.

They were taking her entire life.

Her phone rang.

Her father's name appeared on the screen.

She answered immediately.

"Dad, you need to listen to me. Adrian and Vivian—"

"I already know."

Elena froze.

"What?"

"I've seen the documents."

"They're lying."

Her father's voice became colder.

"You've embarrassed this family enough."

"Dad, I didn't steal anything."

"You have until tomorrow morning to leave the family property."

Her throat tightened.

"You believe them?"

"I believe the evidence."

The call ended.

Elena stood there, staring at the screen.

Behind her, Vivian quietly slipped her hand into Adrian's.

Elena looked at them.

For years, she had thought she was surrounded by people who loved her.

Now she realized she had been surrounded by people waiting for the right moment to destroy her.

She picked up her handbag.

"Enjoy your victory."

Adrian frowned. "Where are you going?"

Elena looked him directly in the eyes.

"Somewhere you can't reach me."

She walked out without looking back.

But as the elevator doors closed, her trembling hands slowly became fists.

They had taken her marriage.

They had taken her family.

They had destroyed her name.

Fine.

She had lost everything.

And perhaps that was exactly what they should have been afraid of.

Because a woman with nothing left to lose could be very dangerous.
