Chapter 1

Angelica trailed behind me and said, "I've already looked into it. No other woman has come to this cottage in the past four years, so where did the son of yours come from? I know you're angry, but I'll take you home right now.

"Even though your family is poor and only makes a living by raising chickens, I've already convinced my parents to accept you. They won't look down on you anymore."

I turned my head and frowned at her. "I told you my family has chicken farms all over the hills."

Angelica scoffed. "That still makes you a chicken farmer. Whatever you do, don't mention that in front of my parents. It's simply too unsophisticated."

Ugh, I might as well forget it. There was no reasoning with a city girl like her.

She had no idea how valuable those free-range, organic chickens roaming all over the hills were. My family had long since climbed out of poverty and made a fortune from them.

I quickened my pace. Otherwise, I'd be late picking up my son, Tommy Fuller, from school.

Angelica followed behind, saying, "I can take you back to my place right now. The villa is spacious, so even though Jeffrey hasn't moved out yet, there's still room for you. But you'll need to be nice to him. He's quite sensitive, so be considerate and don't provoke him."

"What the heck?" I stared at Angelica in disbelief. "You're coming after me before your divorce is even finalized, and now you expect me to live under the same roof as your husband? Do you take me for a homewrecker or a kept man? Have you lost your mind?"

I yanked the car door open and slid inside, desperate to put some distance between us.

With practiced ease, she opened the passenger door and settled in beside me, chiding, "How many times have I told you to lock the doors as soon as you get in? It's basic safety. Why do you still forget?"

Her tone was as familiar as it had been four years ago, as if nothing had ever changed.

Having Angelica stuck to me like a shadow sent a wave of fury surging through me.

"Get out of the car, now!"

Angelica buckled her seatbelt, wearing a smug expression that seemed determined to expose my bluff.

"Aren't you picking up your son from school? You'd better start the car now, or we'll be late."

I checked the time. We really were cutting it close. Once all his classmates leave, Tommy would be the only one left, and he'd be upset.

I stepped on the accelerator, and we pulled out of the garage.

"When you see my son later, please keep your mouth shut," I said with a frown.

"Fine, I won't say a word," Angelic replied nonchalantly. "Devon, you're really selling this act. I'm curious to see how you're going to pull a son out of thin air."

As I drove, I forced myself to stay calm.

We stopped at a red light, and as we sat staring at the congested traffic ahead, I asked in a low voice, "Angelica, what makes you think I'd still be waiting for you after four years?"

My tone caught her off guard, and a flicker of unease crossed her mind. But it was quickly replaced by her usual confidence.

"Having met me, how could you ever settle for anyone else? Who of any real substance do you even meet besides me? If you're not waiting for me, who else could you possibly end up with?"

Angelica began pacing around the warehouse, seemingly gathering her things. My ankles were tightly chained to the chair. While she was distracted, I took off the pendant around my neck and dropped it to the floor. Then, I crushed it with my foot to activate the tracker inside.Vera had wisely prepared safety measures for me in advance. As long as I could keep Angelica calm, Vera would surely find a way to bring help here."Devon, let's go!" Angelica rushed toward me excitedly with a bag in hand, then crouched down to unlock the chains.Just as I was thinking about how to hide the tracker and buy more time, I suddenly heard a noise coming from a nearby metal crate."What was that sound?"Angelica frowned and said sharply, "Don't worry about him."With that, she tried to pull me away. Suspicious, I looked more closely at the metal crate and noticed dried bloodstains beneath it."There's blood!" I cried out in alarm."He's tougher than I expected. Devon, he's the reason we couldn

But this time, Angelica had been kept completely in the dark.Once all the assets were transferred, Jeffrey unceremoniously kicked Angelica out of Manning Group. At the villa, he threw all of her belongings out the door."Angelica, after four years, you still insist on divorcing me? Fine, I'll grant you your wish. Now get out of my villa!"Angelica glared furiously at Jeffrey. "You bastard! Haven't I been good enough to you? How could you scheme against me like this?"Standing at the top of the stairs, Jeffrey looked down at her with a cold sneer. "Angelica, you've got it backwards. It's because I schemed against you that you were ever 'good' to me."Would you have left Devon and married me otherwise? Everything here is mine because I made it happen, while you're just a bottomless pit of greed. You wanted to have your cake and eat it too. You got exactly what you deserved!"Angelica was driven out of the villa in disgrace. With just a bag in hand, she wandered the streets, seeth

"Angelica, Vera will definitely retaliate against me," Jeffrey said desperately. "There's no way I can survive without you. Can you really bear to see me go homeless?""I'll give you everything a spouse is entitled to in a divorce. If you want this villa, you can have it. I'll leave instead," Angelica said coldly and went upstairs to pack. With tears in his eyes, Jeffrey rushed over and wrapped his arms around her from behind."Angelica, if you really must bring Devon back, I'm willing to accept him and even Tommy! The reason Devon refused to return to you before was probably because he was worried about Tommy."He got together with Vera not long after you two broke up, so how deep could their bond really be? Besides, given how poor his family is, do you really think the Lamberts will accept him?"If you could just accept Tommy, Devon would definitely still choose you. I don't want us to break up. The four of us could build a good life together. Devon loved you so much, so I'm sur

The sharp clatter of metal hitting the pavement echoed through the street, leaving Angelica frozen in place.Seeing my face grow increasingly pale, Vera could no longer care about anything else."To hell with everything. Get him to a hospital now!"At her command, the car sped away.Angelica stared blankly at the brass knuckles. They were stained with blood."You used this to hit Devon's head?" she asked hoarsely. Jeffrey stammered, "I was doing it for Tommy! Who knew Devon would—"He suddenly remembered something. "What if Tommy is an illegitimate child? If he's Vera's son, then doesn't that mean she and Devon were together before you two even broke up? Angelica, Devon betrayed you!"Angelica frowned sharply and shook Jeffrey by the arm. "No! Devon wouldn't betray me. Never!"Driven almost mad, she got into her car and followed us to the hospital.…I lay on the hospital bed, my head tightly bandaged. Vera had gone to speak with the doctor, while her bodyguards stood block

Vera had just finished signing a contract. She was dressed in an exquisitely tailored designer outfit. She should have carried herself with grace and poise, yet at this moment, she was frantically rushing over to my side. Her heart ached as she gently touched my head, only to feel something wet. Lifting her hand, she saw it was covered in blood."Who did this?" Vera erupted in a rage as she scanned the crowd, her eyes locking instantly on Angelica and Jeffrey. She grabbed Angelica and roared, "How dare you hurt Devon again? Do you have a death wish or something?"Vera pinned Angelica against the wall and slapped her hard across the face.Angelica, who had been about to fight back, froze and lowered her hand the moment she saw Vera's face clearly."Ms. Lambert, what are you doing here?"Startled, Jeffrey swung a fist toward Vera. "Let go of her! Who do you think you are? How dare you lay hands on Angelica? Do you even know who she is? She could crush you with a snap of her finger

"This is all your fault for hiding Tommy's existence from the start. Otherwise, Jeffrey wouldn't be this upset," Angelica complained.I didn't care what she said about me, but no one was allowed to lay a finger on Tommy.I released Jeffrey's wrist and instead drove my fist straight into his face.I looked coldly at Angelica and warned, "Keep your man in check. If anyone harms Tommy, I'll make sure they pay for it a thousand times over.""You actually hit me!" Jeffrey shrieked. "I'm still the head of the Manning family, and Angelica is the general manager of Manning Group. With just a flick of her wrist, she could crush you."Don't think having her son changes anything. The Manning family will never accept you. Even if I leave, the next head of the family won't be you!"I snorted coldly. Only Jeffrey would care about these things."Who gives a damn about being the head of the Manning family? Only a dog would want that.""Y-You're insulting me?" Jeffrey threw an arm over Angelica
