Chapter 4

Author: Perfect Timing
The strange scene was completely taken in by me and my parents.

Jason was confused. “Mom, what are you doing? We have to settle this clearly; otherwise, how could this marriage go on? Earlier on, you also—”

His mother quickly covered his mouth, then forced a dry laugh as she turned to my mother. “We were impulsive just now. We spoke too harshly. But with so much money involved, of course we got anxious. Please do not take offense. We have embarrassed ourselves.

“We are one family, not two. Jason’s money is also Jenny’s money. There is no need to calculate every penny. Everyone must be hungry. Why not let the waiter serve the food first?”

But Jason was not letting matters go. He pushed his mother’s hand away. “Mom! How can we eat at a time like this? If what Jenny said is true and all my money is gone, how am I supposed to get married? Should I burden you two by making you use your own savings? I will never do that!

“If she does not settle the accounts with me today, I will never let it go! Forget about the marriage!”

Never let it go?

I immediately stated, “Even if the accounts are settled, I will not marry you. If I join your family, you will keep tabs on me down to the bone until there is nothing left!”

A sharp crack split the air, and the whole room fell silent.

I held my burning cheek in disbelief as I looked at Jason’s father.

He had sat silently before, his face dark, but I had never imagined he would suddenly explode and slap me.

“You took my son’s money to sleep with another man? Otherwise, how could you squander all the money? Jason marrying you is the greatest misfortune of the Lane Family!”

His insults were even more vicious than Jason’s or his mother’s. My parents snapped out of their shock — my mother moved to shield me, while my father shoved Jason’s father away.

Jason saw my father grab his father’s collar, and he stepped forward to help, pushing my father to the floor.

I rushed forward without hesitation, slapping Jason’s face again and again. “How dare you hit my dad! You scoundrel!”

Jason’s mother saw me strike her son and lunged at me. My mother was not about to stand by, so she threw her dignity aside and wrestled with her.

In an instant, the scene descended into chaos.

Worse followed. At first, relatives on both sides tried to pull us apart, but somehow it turned into an all-out brawl.

The room was filled with cursing and the sounds of fighting.

Jason even kicked me twice during the chaos.

Just as things were spiraling out of control, the restaurant manager rushed in with security personnel.

“Stop fighting! If this continues, I will call the police!”

With the guards’ forceful intervention, both sides finally stopped.

On that day, only a few of my relatives had come, while the Lane Family had at least ten. We were at a disadvantage, and even my mother’s face was injured.

Jason spat bloody saliva onto the floor. He pushed back his sweaty hair, revealing scratches across his forehead from my nails. “Jenny, I do not think we should make such a big deal of this. You have been with me for four years. How could you just end it like this? Listen, it is still possible to marry. I have a plan.

“There’s more than $200,000 left with you. Count that as my gift to you. Let your parents cover the down payment. I will repay them. Let us pretend nothing ever happened today.”

Pretend nothing ever happened? He had kicked me twice during the fight. Both sides had nearly torn each other apart. Where did he find the audacity to make such a proposition?

His scheme was just too obvious.

I roared at him. “Dream on! You bastard!”

Seeing me curse him, he dropped all pretenses altogether and shouted, “Fine! Jenny, you are something else! If you want no marriage, then we shall have no marriage! But you’d better transfer over $200,000 to me right now, or I will never let you go!”

Clutching my aching stomach, I screamed back, “I will send you every account record right now. Open your blasted eyes and see clearly. Not only is there not a cent left, but you owe me $100,000! I will return your words to you. If you do not pay me back, I will never let you go!

“If you want things clear, then let us do it right now. If there is anything your pig brain does not understand, ask me immediately, and I will enlighten you! That way, you will not come back later to disgust me again!”

After saying that, I dumped every account record and bank transfer into his phone.

Just as Jason was about to check it, his mother suddenly slapped the phone out of his hand.

When Jason picked up, he was overjoyed. “Jenny, do you finally wish to get back with me? You called me first! I knew you could not bear to leave me. We have been together four years…” I could not be bothered to listen to his rambling. “Which one of your family members went around our neighborhood saying we are getting married, and that I’m pregnant?” He froze for a moment. “I don’t know… Back when we were on good terms, I often came to your house. We were already talking about marriage, maybe people just surmised it and spread it around.” After four years with him, I knew him too well. When he told the truth, his tone was steady, almost flat. When he lied, his words rose and fell. I nearly ground my teeth to pieces. “Jason, whether you know about this or not, it does not matter. It’s impossible between us. Even if people say I am already pregnant, even if they say I have already given birth and am at home recovering, I will never marry you! Your entire family disgusts me!” I

That night, Jason got drunk and showed up downstairs at my building. Through tears, he sent me voice messages. “Baby, I wronged you. Please forgive me, okay? My mom went behind my back and borrowed that money from you. She gave it all to my uncle. “She told me at the time that she and Dad needed money, so she had asked you. Later, she told me she had already paid you back. I believed her, and I trusted you, so I never questioned it. I did not expect this at all.” It was no wonder his mother had suddenly stopped us from settling the accounts on the day of the engagement. She must have remembered that the missing money had been squandered by her brother. But by then, it was far too late. I told Jason to leave. There was no future between us. If he was willing to write an IOU and repay me in installments every month, I could hold off on taking him to court. Jason shamelessly begged me. “Baby, can’t we just get back together? Tomorrow, we can get the marriage certificate. From

Jason went silent and refused to respond, because he knew the things I gave him were all genuine, and he could never afford to pay me back. No matter how much I messaged him, he ignored me. I had no patience left, so I sent him one final warning. “You have three days to return the money. If not, we’ll see each other in court. I could also go to your company, and we can talk face-to-face.” My threat worked. He finally replied, “I was just being impulsive. I was afraid you would really leave me. I never thought you would return everything I bought for you.” His remorseful act had come far too late. He was not afraid of losing me. He was afraid of my demands. When I did not back down, he went quiet again. I was not afraid. He valued his job a lot, because that was the one thing his entire family could brag about back home and among their relatives. He feared I would ruin it for him. The court summons reached Jason. Unexpectedly, his mother came again, this time openly, a

On the third day after everything happened, Jason’s mother came to my door. Seeing that she had come alone, wearing a hat and a mask, I knew right away there were ulterior motives. My father opened the door. He did not greet her warmly, and neither my mother nor I bothered to be nice. I sat on the sofa eating fresh cherries without even lifting my eyes. Jason’s mother forced a smile and sat down beside me. “Jenny, things between you and Jason should not have gotten this bad. I never wanted this. Yesterday, everyone was too impulsive. I have always liked you, and I truly hoped you two could be together. “About the apartment, we will think of something. As for the $200,000 Jason left with you, if you spent it, then so be it. Once he earns more, he will spend it on buying gifts for you. Is that all right?” She showed me just how diverse human beings could be. I was so shocked that I widened my eyes. “Mrs. Lane, you came here today without Jason or his father knowing, right? Yo

Jason was stunned. “Mom, what are you doing?! That phone cost several thousand!” His mother could not come up with an excuse. She held her head, then tilted it to the side. “Oh no, I feel so dizzy, it must be from when I got hit earlier. Take me to the hospital, quickly…” Before leaving with his mother, Jason spat out a threat at me, telling me to just wait until he settled scores with me, and that he would come back after he finished calculating everything. The crowd dispersed, leaving only me and my parents. Looking at the scratches on my mother’s face, I could not hold back anymore. I had not cried when I was slapped earlier, but at that moment, the tears would not stop. “I’m sorry, Mom, I dragged you into this.” My mother gently patted my back. “Who has not misjudged someone when they were young? I don’t blame you. I’m just afraid that you…” I knew what she wanted to say. “Afraid I will not let go? Today, their entire family showed their true colors. If I still tried to
