Penulis: Delicious Ice Cream

Chapter 1

Penulis: Delicious Ice Cream
On our marriage registration day, I, Olivia Lawson, had been standing in line at the city hall for three hours.

I was holding my queue ticket when Harry Scott finally picked up my call.

"Olivia, Evelyn's cat went missing. She's emotionally falling apart and locked herself on the rooftop. I have to stay with her." His tone was completely matter-of-fact. "We can register our marriage anytime, but right now, Evelyn has no one but me."

I glanced at the number on the screen and calmly replied, "Okay. Go and help her find her cat."

After hanging up, I walked straight into the pawn shop next door and dropped the engagement ring Harry had given me onto the counter.

"Sir, cash it out. I'm going to have the most expensive steakhouse dinner I can afford."

After devouring two plates of premium steak, I felt fantastic.

When I opened the front door that evening, the living room was completely dark. I flipped on the lights and immediately saw Harry sprawled on the couch. His black jacket was covered in white cat hair.

When he heard the sound of the door, he looked up and immediately frowned.

"Why weren't you at home? Did you actually go to a steakhouse?" There was disbelief in his voice. "I thought you'd at least stay home and cry about not getting our marriage registered today."

I put the crispy chicken bites I'd brought home on the dining table and pulled out a chair. "Not getting registered today saved me nine bucks in administrative fees. Why would I cry over that?"

My gaze landed on the cat hair clinging to his collar. "Did you manage to find the cat?"

"We did." Harry sighed and rubbed his temples. "Evelyn was crying so hard she could barely breathe. She's been timid since she was little, and now she has a serious need for constant company. I'm the only person she can rely on.

"I went over to accompany her today. I was just acting as her emotional support companion. You're usually so understanding. Can't you stop being so petty just this once?"

As he spoke, he stood up and walked over to me. He was trying to put on his kind fiancé act.

"I was just helping her calm down. Nothing happened. Besides, I bought you such an expensive engagement ring. Isn't that proof enough of how important you are to me?"

I listened quietly to his long speech. I didn't scream at him or shed a single tear.

Instead, I pulled out my phone, opened the Venmo app, and held it out to him.

"What are you doing?" Harry froze.

"Collecting payment." I pushed the phone closer.

"Since you love being everyone's emotional support companion so much, fine. Let's put a price on it. Twenty bucks an hour. You were there for five hours this afternoon, so I'll round it up to a hundred. Pay me now. I accept cash advances too."

Harry's expression darkened instantly. "Olivia, are you seriously joking about this?"

"Who's joking?" I pulled my phone away and waved my balance in front of him.

"I already pawned the engagement ring. I got eight grand for it. Consider that the deposit for the emotional damages caused by you breaking our agreement to get registered today. As for the hundred bucks, that's your service fee."

The air seemed to freeze.

Harry stared at my phone. His voice suddenly shot up an octave. "You pawned the engagement ring? Olivia, have you lost your mind? That was a symbol of our love!"

"Think of it as an equivalent exchange." I leaned back in my chair. My voice remained perfectly calm. "You took my time and gave it to Evelyn to comfort her. I turned the ring into premium steak and cash. Seems fair to me."

"You're completely unreasonable!" Harry paced back and forth across the living room furiously. "Evelyn lost her cat. She needed me! How can you have so little empathy? A cat's life is still a life!"

"My empathy comes with a price tag. I don't provide free service. If you think she needs you more, you should be grateful I didn't charge you emergency-room rates."

I stood up, walked over to the television cabinet, unplugged the latest gaming console, and picked it up.

Harry stared at me. His eyes went wide. "What are you doing? Put my console down!"

I raised my phone and took a picture of the console. "If you're going to become a full-time emotional support companion, this thing will just collect dust."

My fingers flew across my phone screen. "Like new, with the original controller. I can make it free for a local delivery. I'll sell it on the secondhand market and put the money toward household expenses."

Harry lunged for it. I immediately raised my phone. "Try taking it, and I'll list your Alienware computer too."

His hand froze in midair. His face turned pale.

"Olivia, do you really have to take things this far? We're only postponing the registration by one day."

"Postponing? I think you misunderstood." I tapped on the screen to publish the listing and looked up at him. "I'm not marrying a part-time employee."

My phone suddenly buzzed. A buyer had already messaged me on the secondhand platform.

"Look." I held the screen up for him. "Someone already bought your console. I'm clearing out half of this house first thing tomorrow morning."

Three months later, using the money from pawning the engagement ring and collecting all my various 'emotional damages fees,' I took over a new storefront downtown. Business was booming. One Friday evening, a heavy rainstorm rolled in.Ian pulled up outside my office building to pick me up from work. The moment I got in from the passenger side, he handed me a warm cup of coffee."Ms. Lawson, our quarterly financials just came in. Profit doubled." Ian started the car and smiled playfully. "Let's celebrate. What would you like to have for dinner?" "It has to be a steakhouse. I want a double serving of juicy pork meat. I put the straw through the lid and took a huge sip.The car smoothly merged onto the main road. At the next traffic light, we came to a stop. The windshield wipers moved furiously back and forth. I casually turned to look out the window. My gaze landed on the entrance of a discount supermarket by the roadside. There were two people beneath the awning. They were argu

Late at night on the weekend, I was curled up on the couch watching stand-up comedy when a dull thud suddenly came from outside my door. Then came broken, intermittent sobbing.I walked to the entryway and opened the door. A strong scent of alcohol immediately hit me.Harry collapsed on my doormat without a care for his reputation. He was holding a single black right dress shoe to his chest. It was one of the pieces from his half of things I had left behind when I divided up our belongings. The moment he saw me, he jerked his head up. Hope flickered in his bloodshot eyes."Olivia, I knew you'd open the door–"He tried to stand, but his knees buckled, and he dropped back down."Olivia, I was wrong. I really know I was wrong." Harry hugged the single shoe tightly while tears and snot ran down his face."These past few days have been driving me insane. Evelyn sits in that wheelchair all day and gets angry at me about everything."She says I push the wheelchair wrong. She says the

One Friday night, I had just put on a face mask when the doorbell rang. When I opened the door, Evelyn was standing outside with tear-filled eyes. She leaned weakly against the doorframe while her right foot hovered off the ground."Olivia–" She burst into tears immediately. "I twisted my ankle. I called Harry, but he didn't answer. I know all he can think about lately is you."I came here today to make my position clear. I'll give Harry back to you. Please stop tormenting him."If Harry had been there to see her noble act of self-sacrifice, he probably would've felt sorry for her.Unfortunately for her, I was the one standing there.Instead of mocking her, I grabbed her hand enthusiastically. "No, no, absolutely not!"I stared at her in horror. "You have to hold on to this piece of garbage! If you return him now, I'll charge you a massive depreciation fee and additional charges for emotional distress!"All the sweet words Evelyn had prepared went down the drain. She stared at

At three in the afternoon, I was at the office reviewing financial reports when a piercing blast from a loudspeaker suddenly came from downstairs."Olivia! I was wrong! Please forgive me!"The voice carried so well that everyone in the office stopped typing and turned toward the windows at the same time.I walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window and looked down.In the plaza outside our office building, Harry stood in the center of a giant heart made from 999 red roses. He was wearing a perfectly tailored suit. It looked new, which made sense, considering I still had the left shoe from every pair of his old dress shoes. He held a megaphone in one hand and shouted with all the emotion he could muster.A crowd quickly gathered around him, and several people had already pulled out their phones to record the whole thing."Olivia, I've thought everything through these past few days! I can't live without you! Evelyn is in the past. You're the woman I want to marry! Please give me

At the food vendor's stall, the smell of cumin and grilled lamb filled the air.I bit into the last piece of lamb on my skewer, picked up my ice-cold beer, and clinked bottles with Ian across the table."How's the battle on the island going? I hope nobody died." Ian leisurely peeled a small crawfish. His eyes glistened with amusement.I was just about to retrieve my phone and check the line-dancing videos David had been sending me when I heard a hoarse voice from behind me. It almost sounded like the person was crying."Olivia–"I turned around. For a moment, I barely recognized the person standing in front of me.Harry was wearing a wrinkled shirt. His carefully styled hair had turned into something resembling a pile of dried grass. His face and neck were covered in red, peeling patches from the island's brutal sun.His eyes were bloodshot, dark circles hung beneath them, and he looked like a refugee who had just escaped from a survival show."Well, well. If it isn't Mr. Scott

The air conditioning in the VIP lounge for the flight was on full blast.I walked in empty-handed and immediately spotted Harry and Evelyn sitting side by side on a couch.Harry was in a linen shirt while Evelyn had on an absurdly oversized straw hat. There were two huge suitcases in front of them. When Harry saw me, his eyes lit up for a second. He immediately put on his usual arrogant expression."I thought you were going to keep playing tough." He looked me up and down, and his eyes settled on my completely empty hands. He smiled smugly and added, "You even came to the airport without luggage. What, are you in such a hurry to apologize? Olivia, I told you. As long as you admit you were wrong, the ticket is still yours."Evelyn softly chimed in. "Olivia, I'm so glad you came. Harry's been talking about you non-stop these past few days. I was worried you'd be upset with me and miss such an expensive trip."Watching the two of them sing the same tune, I couldn't help but laugh.
