The moon hung high above Moonhaven.

Everything was quiet.

Too quiet.

Lyra stood frozen on the porch, staring at her wrist. The strange silver symbols had disappeared, leaving no trace behind.

She slowly touched her skin.

Nothing.

“Was I imagining it?” she whispered.

Before she could think further, Arnold stepped onto the porch.

His golden eyes searched her face with concern.

“Are you alright?”

Lyra forced a small smile.

“I think so.”

“I heard you cry out.”

She hesitated.

“My wrist…”

She rolled up her sleeve.

“It started glowing again.”

Arnold’s expression remained calm, though his heart pounded.

“What did you see?”

“Symbols.”

“They spread all the way to my arm.”

She looked into his eyes.

“Arnold…”

“What’s happening to me?”

For a long moment, he remained silent.

Then he answered carefully.

“I don’t know everything yet.”

“But I promise you this…”

“You are not cursed.”

Lyra searched his face.

“You sound as if you know more than you’re telling me.”

Arnold looked away.

“There are things I can’t explain…”

“…not until I’m certain.”

She nodded slowly.

Although she was curious, she could tell he wasn’t lying.

He was protecting something.

Or someone.

Beyond Moonhaven’s borders…

Ten rogue hunters crouched among the trees.

Their leader raised a clenched fist.

Everyone stopped.

He pointed toward the peaceful village below.

“There.”

“The girl is inside.”

One hunter frowned.

“What about the barrier?”

The leader smiled.

“We don’t destroy it.”

“We slip through it.”

He pulled a small black crystal from his pocket.

“The Master paid a fortune for this.”

The crystal glowed with crimson energy.

Cracks began spreading across the invisible magical barrier protecting Moonhaven.

Far away…

Inside an ancient watchtower…

A silver bell suddenly rang.

Dong…

Dong…

Dong…

A young guard’s eyes widened.

“The barrier!”

He rushed outside.

“We’re under attack!”

Arnold’s head snapped toward the village.

His expression instantly changed.

“What is it?” Lyra asked.

“The alarm.”

His voice became sharp.

“Stay inside the cottage.”

“What?”

“No matter what you hear…”

“Do not come outside.”

Without waiting for a reply, Arnold sprinted toward the village square.

Lyra watched him disappear into the darkness.

Fear settled heavily in her chest.

The peaceful streets erupted into chaos.

Children were rushed into their homes.

Warriors armed themselves with silver swords and bows.

The village chief shouted orders.

“Protect the eastern gate!”

“Archers to the rooftops!”

“No one fights alone!”

Arnold arrived in the center of the square.

“What happened?”

“The barrier has been breached,” the chief answered grimly.

Arnold’s face darkened.

“How?”

“We don’t know.”

His golden eyes narrowed.

“They’re after her.”

At that same moment…

A loud crash echoed from Lyra’s cottage.

BOOM!

The front door burst inward.

Lyra jumped to her feet.

Three masked hunters stepped inside.

Each wore black armor etched with crimson runes.

The tallest pointed his sword at her.

“Lyra Hart.”

She backed away.

“W-Who are you?”

“We’re here to collect you.”

“I don’t know you!”

“You don’t need to.”

The hunter smiled coldly.

“Our employer does.”

Another hunter stepped forward.

“Come quietly.”

“It’ll hurt less.”

Lyra shook her head.

“No.”

She grabbed the nearest wooden chair and swung it with all her strength.

Crash!

The chair splintered against one hunter’s shoulder.

He barely moved.

Instead…

He laughed.

“Courage.”

“I like that.”

“But it won’t save you.”

Outside…

Arnold heard the crash.

His heart skipped.

“Lyra!”

Without thinking, he sprinted toward the cottage.

The hunters inside heard his voice.

“He’s coming,” one muttered.

The leader nodded.

“Perfect.”

“Take the girl.”

“I’ll deal with him.”

Lyra turned toward the back door.

If she could reach the forest

A powerful hand grabbed her wrist.

She gasped.

“Let go!”

She struggled desperately, kicking and scratching at the masked hunter.

His grip only tightened.

Then…

The silver mark on her wrist suddenly burst into brilliant light.

The hunter screamed.

“AAAH!”

Smoke rose from his hand as though he had touched burning iron.

He stumbled backward, clutching his blistered palm.

“What… is she?”

The room trembled.

The windows shattered.

A pulse of silver energy exploded from Lyra’s body.

BOOM!

The hunters were thrown across the room.

Outside, Arnold stopped in his tracks.

His golden eyes widened.

“The mark…”

“It protected her.”

The leader slowly stood, wiping blood from the corner of his mouth.

Instead of fear…

He smiled.

“So the rumors were true.”

He looked directly at Lyra.

“You really are…”

“…the Chosen One.”

Lyra stared at him in horror.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about!”

The hunter laughed.

“You will.”

“Very soon.”

Just then

BANG!

The cottage wall exploded inward.

Arnold crashed through the shattered wood like a storm unleashed.

His eyes burned with fury.

He stepped between Lyra and the hunters.

His voice was calm…

But deadly.

“No one…”

He slowly drew a gleaming silver blade from beneath his cloak.

“…touches her.”
