LOGINLILA
Just at that moment, Lowell rolled over, and our gaze met.
He didn't flinch. With one glance at the woman sleeping in his embrace, in nothing more than a pair of shorts and a top, he placed a finger to his lips.
"Are you kidding me?"
"Reduce your voice," he hissed. "Can't you see she's asleep?"
"On our matrimonial bed, Lowell, and you're asking me to be quiet?" I cried.
A small moan prickled my ear, and I watched Claire move closer to him, slowly blinking her eyes open.
"What's... all... the noise about Lowell?" She breathed.
"It's nothing," my husband lovingly replied, waving me away. "Go back to sleep."
I didn't know whether to cry or shout.
Speechless, I did the only thing I could think of: I quietly walked out of the room.
This wasn't the first time Lowell brought an outsider into our room. Whenever his mom or sister slept over, they would demand that we vacate the room for them. We had two extra bedrooms in our modern flat, yet they always insisted on staying in ours.
"The master bedroom is the biggest; it is culture that you honour your in-laws," Mrs Black would assert.
The first time I spoke to Lowell about it, he had thrown his card at me and said,
"They're family. Go rent a hotel room for the night if you're not comfortable sleeping in the guestroom."Is Claire family too?
A minute later, he walked into the living room, visibly angry.
"What is wrong with you, Lila?"
"What is wrong with me?"
"I told you to be quiet. You saw that Claire was asleep."
My heart clenched as I stared at him in disbelief.
"Not only did you bring her into our home without my consent, but you're letting her take over our room, too? Isn't that insulting to me?"
For a brief second, just a tiny, brief second, guilt flashed across his face, but Lowell masked it immediately.
"It's your fault. If you had set up the guest room, then she wouldn't have slept in our room." He countered. "She's a very important guest to me, Lila. It is my wife's duty to ensure my guests are well catered for."
"I was out. You could've asked one of the maids to do it."
"I'm doing this for you. Do you want her to think my wife can't take care of the home?"
His self-righteous tone slapped me across the face.
"So I should act as a maid to your first love?"
"It's just a bed, Lila. It's just sleep and nothing more." My husband shrugged casually, glancing towards our room in worry.
I could hardly believe my ears.
Sleep and nothing more after finding them in that position?
I'd been with this man for five years, three months, and thirteen days, yet he had never once cuddled me.
Whenever I slept on the couch, he slept on the sofa. We had only ever shared the bed thrice in those years, because according to Lowell, he liked his space.
"What is wrong with you, Lila?" he asked coldly. "You were never like this, but ever since Claire came, you've been acting up."
Normally, I would have held back. I didn't want to give him a reason to give up on us, so I always forced away my feelings, hoping one day I wouldn't have to anymore. But today, I couldn't.
"I'm your wife," I choked out.
"Who said otherwise?" Lowell frowned. "Get your excuse straight, Lila. Claire has nothing to do with your tantrum. Nothing has changed between us except your attitude. You do it all for my family, so there should be no issue since Claire is just like family," he added dismissively.
God... is this what I get after five years of being with him?
And to think I was holding back because I thought this was all a misunderstanding.
Glaring at him, I stood up straight.
"I've had enough."
"What does that even mean?"
"I refuse to be treated like this, Lowell. Let's divorce."
The room went quiet until-
"Divorce." He let out an amused scoff. "Did you take up acting in your spare time?"
"I'm serious, Lowell. I'm just coming from-"
He cut me off with a raised hand.
"I'm going to return before Claire wakes up. She seems to have an upset stomach, so make soup for dinner. Also, clean out the guest rooms, as my mother and sister will be sleeping over tonight."
"Lowell, I-"
"Enough, Lila. Enough with your pity party. I give you everything you ask for, so what more do you want?" Lowell snapped. "Have dinner ready by six."
And without another word, he walked away.
LILAFor what felt like ages, I stood in that spot, wondering if I had really been so blind all these years. To Lowell, I was either Claire, his first love, his maid, or a convenience. Never once had he seen me as Lila.Struggling to stop the tears, I bit down on my lips,At least one thing was sure: he had given me the confirmation I needed to finally leave.Pulling out my phone, I opened the chatbox to accept the offer I thought I was going to reject by the end of the day."Please sign me up for the mentorship program."I'd endured the last five years because I thought they were family. I'd be a fool if I let his first love treat me the same way.****Dropping my bag in the living room, I started on dinner.Yes, my first thought was to pack my things and leave.I already had the divorce papers signed, I didn't necessarily need to stay here until the one-month cooling period was over, but after watching him dismiss me without a second thought, I didn't want to argue anymore."He does

LILAClosing my eyes in dire restraint, I wanted to beat myself up for dragging out the conversation. I had it all planned, yet I thought he deserved one last chance...That maybe yesterday had been a nightmare. How foolish could I have been?"Wait," I called as he turned to leave."What is it again?""I have a document for you to sign. It's due today."I pulled out a brown folder and pushed it toward him."Another children's charity?" Lowell signed it without a glance. "Do this and cheer up. It's all you do at home anyway. Spend as much of my money as you want and go back to being your nice self."A tear slid down my cheek as he dropped the pen."Do you even know what you just signed?""God, Lila... You're so difficult," he murmured, his eyes still on his phone. "Does it matter? You get the money you want. That's enough for you, right? I'm leaving."True to his word, I watched his back disappear before my legs finally gave out, my body collapsing to the floor.Twice... I'd tried twic
LILAThe first thought I had was, This wasn't the man I married.I stared at Lowell in disbelief."Is that all you're going to say?"His expression faltered as his eyes took in the state of my burns. For a brief second, just a brief second, a flicker of worry passed through his gaze. He even made a move to rise and come toward me, until—"My stomach!" Claire moaned in pain. That was all it took for his attention to snap back to her."What's wrong? Did the liquid splash there, too?""No... It's just that..." she groaned weakly. "In my haste to see you, I didn't eat all day. My ulcer is acting up.""Oh...""What are you waiting for, brother?" Tiana rushed over. "You should take her out to eat. The person who's meant to cook is useless right now.""But..." Lowell glanced at me, conflicted."You can go with your wife," Claire sighed. "I can manage. She needs you more—ah!""Brother!""Enough!" Mrs. Black cut in sharply. "I didn't raise you this way, Lowell! Take her to dinner now. In fact,
LILAAs I ended the call, Lowell frowned at me."What are you waiting for, Lila? Get our guest some refreshments.""Remember," his mother, Mrs Black, called, "I only drink freshly squeezed orange juice. Nothing else.""A cup of hot chocolate with whipped cream for me," his sister Tiana chimed in. "Lots of sprinkles, as usual."I had made their drinks a thousand times, so I knew their preferences by heart. But knowing the truth of what I truly was to them made the familiarity feel pathetic this time."Come on," their guest said softly, pouting. "You shouldn't speak to Lowell's wife like that. One would think she's a slave."A small stir of hope bloomed in my chest. At least one person could see how cruel this was."Wife?" Tiana scoffed. "We all know that's just a title. Lowell has loved you, and only you, for years, Claire. Ever since we were young and neighbours.""You followed him around everywhere," Mrs Black added fondly. "Your parents and I were certain you'd end up together befor
LILAMy name is Lila, but Lowell called me Claire for the five years we were married. He said it was a pet name he loved, and if I loved him as much as I claimed to, I'd accept it. Just as he asked me to give up my dream of being a writer so I can focus on playing my wifely duties."Look, Lila, I have enough to take care of you and your future generations. I don't want people thinking my wife has to scribble on paper to eat."The words made me feel small, but I'd come to know he meant no harm. He was just a cold man who didn't know how to show his emotions.I thought if I agreed to all he wanted, his heart would finally be mine. That after twenty years of pining after him, Lowell would finally see my efforts and love me back. His family was no different. His mother and sister saw me as their personal maid.Once, his mother called me at midnight because she was craving her favourite cake, which they sold two towns over."My family holds a special place in my heart." Lowell had said. "Y
