“You’re smiling too much.”

Irene kept the smile in place and looked at Ares without moving her head.

“I’ve been introduced to fourteen people in twenty minutes.”

“Thirteen. I know who I introduced you to.”

“Then one of them introduced himself twice. What’s up with him?”

That earned her the faintest smile at the corner of Ares’s mouth.

The gala was not what Irene had expected.

For one thing, there was food. Actual food. Trays of it.

There were also glasses of wine and champagne being carried aro

They walked back in silence, with Ares a few steps behind Irene. At first, Irene didn’t think anything of it. Then she became aware of exactly where he was. Right behind her.She straightened a little. Why had she done that? She kept walking and immediately started wondering if she always walked like this. Were her arms moving normally? Was she suddenly taking weirdly short steps? Had she ever thought this much about walking in her entire life? This was stupid. She was no longer sixteen with a crush following her between classes. Also, this was Ares. Her husband. Technically. But that did not help. If anything, the word "husband" made her more aware of him.Irene told herself to just walk normally, which of course made normal walking feel impossible.By the time they reached her room, she was relieved to finally stop. She turned around, and Ares was watching her. Suddenly, her stomach did something annoying.Great.“Ares.”“Yes?”She was ready to say something and then completely forg

Another night, Irene came back to the estate after work, tired enough that she barely remembered the drive. She went straight upstairs, changed out of her uniform, washed her face, and pulled on a robe over her sleep clothes. All she wanted was something to drink and maybe ten quiet minutes before bed.She opened her bedroom door.Ares was standing in the hallway. She looked behind him, then back at him. “What are you doing out here?”“Waiting for you.”She tightened the belt of the robe. “I can see that. Why?”Ares looked entirely comfortable with the situation. “Can a husband not wait for his wife?”There was something in the way he said wife that made her face warm immediately. And Irene hated how easy that had become. She changed the subject before he could comment on her pulse, her blood, her blush, or any of the other things he usually and casually commented on.She remembered something, and actually, this might work.“You seem like you’re in a good mood.”Ares smiled. I’m alway

“I’m serious about my family.”Ares looked up from his plate.Irene had been waiting less than five minutes for him to bring Belle up again. They were eating in one of the smaller dining rooms, though eating was generous where Ares was concerned. Irene had food. Ares had a glass of red and the habit of sitting through meals as if human dinner was something he had agreed to supervise. She had returned to the estate earlier. Her apartment had felt smaller after Belle left and too quiet in the wrong way. So Irene had packed her overnight things and Mr. Mustard and came back. Not because she wanted to see Ares.Obviously.Ares set his glass down. “My offer still stands.”“I know.”“And you could end the problem.”“No. You could end the problem.”“There is a difference?”“Yes. A big one.”Ares waited, and Irene put down her fork.“Belle and my mother are difficult. Sometimes awful. But they’re still my family.”“I’m aware they are your family.”“That’s not what I mean. They are all I have

“You’re home.”Irene stopped in the doorway and looked at her sister.Belle was sitting on the couch with one leg tucked under her, scrolling through her phone.Irene closed the door behind her.“How did you get in?”“You gave me a key. Remember?”And Irene wished she hadn’t. “For emergencies.”Belle looked around the room. “This could’ve been an emergency. But, okay, I was bored.”Irene stared at her. There were moments when she wondered what it must be like to be sixteen and genuinely believe boredom counted as a reason to enter someone else’s apartment without asking. She set her bag down. “What are you doing here?”“I wanted to see you.”“Really now.”Belle rolled her eyes. “I’m your sister.”Irene walked into the kitchen and checked Mr. Mustard’s tank first.Everything looked fine.Belle had not come to feed him. Irene had learned long ago that Mr. Mustard became invisible to the rest of the family unless he was somehow inconvenient.Belle got up from the couch. “You’ve been gone

“I have a question.”Dorian looked up from his desk. “Okay?”Irene closed the office door behind her and sat in the chair across from him.She had come looking for solid ground, though, not literally. The estate had plenty of that. Marble, stone, old wood, probably enough expensive flooring to pay her rent for several lifetimes.Ares had spent the previous night asking to watch her like he was proposing a change to the dinner menu. Irene still hadn’t figured out what she was supposed to do with that. She was definitely not telling Dorian, but she needed someone she could talk to while she was in that big house.“So,” she said, “why was the screening process so intense?”Dorian’s pen stopped.Irene leaned forward.“When Celeste first interviewed me, it was everything. Drinking. Drugs. Parties. Relationships. Criminal history. Who I knew. Whether I had anyone likely to cause trouble. She practically wanted proof I’d never made a bad decision in my entire life.”“That was deliberate.”“I

“Ares is waiting for you in his study.”Irene stopped halfway up the stairs. She had been back at the estate for less than twenty minutes, still had convenience-store air on her clothes, and had been looking forward to exactly three things: a shower, checking on Mr. Mustard, and getting into bed.Apparently she had aimed too high.“Did he say why?”“No,” Lena said.So Irene changed direction and headed for the study.Ares was behind his desk when she entered, reading something on paper because phones remained one of the few modern inventions he seemed to dislike. He looked up.“You’re late.”“Really none of your business, but…I was working.”“I know. And I make it my business to know everything about you, dear wife.”“And that’s becoming one of your less charming qualities.”Ares put the paper down. “A rival Coven has made inquiries about you.”That wiped the rest of her complaint away. “What kind of inquiries?”“Your background. Our marriage. How long we knew each other before the we
