For a long moment, nobody moved.

The hallway was suddenly too small. The air felt thick, like the air before a storm.

Adrian slipped his phone into his pocket and made his face calm. He had done this a thousand times in board rooms. He knew how to hide what he was feeling.

But this was not a board room. This was his mother.

"Nobody," he said. "A business matter."

"A business matter." Eleanor took a slow step toward him. Her heels clicked once on the marble. "You told your security man to find someone fast. You said she might not be well." Her eyes narrowed. "Since when do you worry about the health of a business matter, Adrian?"

He said nothing.

Eleanor's gaze moved past him, down the east hall, toward the open door of the guest room. Something changed in her face.

"She's gone," Eleanor said. It was not a question.

"Mother..."

"Celeste is gone." She said it again, slowly, as if she were tasting the words. "She left. In the middle of the night, like a thief."

"She didn't steal anything."

"Didn't she?" Eleanor's lips went thin. "Then why are you sending men after her?"

Before Adrian could answer, a small, soft sound came from behind his mother.

A sob.

Isabella had lowered her head. Her shoulders were shaking. She pressed a pale hand to her mouth, as if she were trying very hard to hold something in.

"Isabella, dear?" Eleanor turned at once. Her voice went gentle, the way it never did for anyone else. "What is it?"

"I'm sorry." Isabella's voice came out small and broken. "I'm so sorry, Eleanor. I didn't want to say anything. I promised myself I wouldn't. It isn't my place..."

"Say what?"

"Isabella," Adrian said sharply. "Don't."

But Isabella lifted her wet eyes and looked straight at Eleanor, and Adrian knew it was already too late.

"She's pregnant," Isabella whispered. "Celeste is pregnant. And she ran away with the Vance heir."

---

The silence that followed was the loudest thing Adrian had ever heard.

Eleanor did not gasp. She did not shout. She did not even blink. She just stood very, very still.

Adrian watched his mother's face, and what he saw there made his blood go cold.

It was not shock. It was not anger.

It was hunger.

It was the look she wore when a rival company was in trouble and she smelled a chance to swallow it whole. It was the look she wore at auctions, when she saw something she wanted and decided it was already hers.

"Pregnant," Eleanor said softly.

"I found the vitamins in her room," Isabella said, dabbing her eyes. "Prenatal vitamins. I begged her to tell Adrian. I told her he deserved to know. But she just laughed at me. She said..." Isabella's voice cracked. "She said the baby was hers, and the Vance family would never see it."

*That's a lie,* Adrian thought. *Celeste would never say that.*

But then he stopped. Did he know that? Did he really know anything about what his wife would say? He had not listened to her in three years.

Eleanor turned to face him fully. "Is this true?"

Adrian's jaw tightened. "Dr. Lin confirmed it. This morning."

"This morning." Eleanor let out a short, cold breath. "So my son's wife has been carrying our blood under this roof, and she hid it from all of us. And then she walked out the back gate with it in the dark."

"She didn't walk out with anything. It's her child."

"It's a Vance child." Eleanor's voice cracked like a whip. "Do you understand what that means? Do you understand what you've let walk out of this house?"

"I understand that she was scared."

"Scared?" His mother laughed. It was not a nice sound. "Scared of what? She lived in a palace. She wore silk. She had servants to bring her tea. What on earth did that girl have to be scared of?"

*Of you,* Adrian thought. *Of me. Of every one of us.*

But he did not say it out loud.

Eleanor was already pulling her phone from the pocket of her jacket. Her fingers moved fast over the screen.

"What are you doing?" Adrian asked.

"What you should have done the moment you found out." She raised the phone to her ear. "I'm calling Morrison."

Morrison. The head of the family's legal team. A man with a quiet voice and no heart at all. When the Vance family wanted something to go away, Morrison made it go away. When they wanted something taken, Morrison took it.

"Mother. It's seven in the morning."

"Then he can wake up." Eleanor's eyes were flat and hard. "A Vance child will not grow up in some cheap rented room with a runaway mother and no name. I won't allow it. Not while I'm breathing."

---

She walked away down the hall, already talking low and fast into the phone.

Adrian started after her, but Isabella stepped into his path.

She put a gentle hand on his arm. Her eyes were still shining with tears, and her voice was soft as silk.

"Adrian, please don't be angry with me. I couldn't keep it a secret any longer. It was eating me alive. Your mother had a right to know." She squeezed his arm. "And so did you."

Adrian looked down at her hand on his sleeve.

He had known Isabella Moreau for ten years. Once, a long time ago, he had thought he loved her. He had thought she was the softest, sweetest person in the world. When she left him eight years ago, it had broken something inside him that never quite healed.

When she came back this year, he had told himself that it was a second chance. That fate was giving him back the life he was supposed to have.

But now he stood in the cold hallway and looked at her face, and he saw something he had never let himself see before.

Her tears had stopped very quickly.

"When?" he asked.

Isabella blinked. "What?"

"You said you found the vitamins in her room." His voice was low and even. "When did you find them, Isabella?"

Her lips parted. "I... it was..."

"Yesterday? Last week?"

"I don't remember exactly. Why does it matter?"

"Because I found out twenty minutes ago." He gently took her hand off his arm and let it drop. "From a doctor. On the phone. And you've known for days."

"Adrian, that's not fair..."

"You said you begged her to tell me." He took a step closer. "If you cared so much that I knew, why didn't you tell me yourself?"

Isabella opened her mouth. Then she closed it again.

For the very first time since he had known her, Isabella Moreau did not have an answer ready.

"I was protecting her," she said finally. "I didn't want to cause trouble between you."

"You didn't want to cause trouble," Adrian repeated slowly.

"Yes."

"So you waited." He watched her eyes. "You waited until she was gone. Until it was too late for me to do anything. And then you told my mother first."

Isabella's face went pale under her makeup.

"That's... that's not how it was."

"Then how was it?"

She stared at him. Behind the sweet softness of her face, something hard and cold flickered, just for a second. Then it was gone, hidden away behind a fresh wave of tears.

"I can't believe you'd think that of me," she whispered. "After everything we've been through."

She turned and hurried away up the stairs, her cream dress floating behind her like a ghost.

Adrian watched her go.

He did not follow.

*She knew,* he thought. *She knew, and she kept it from me. She waited for the right moment to use it.*

And then a darker thought crept in, one that he did not want to face.

*What else has she kept from me? What else did she do to Celeste that I never saw?*

He remembered the emerald bracelet in the velvet pouch. The spare key. The maid who had been fired. He remembered the calm look on Celeste's face at that dinner, like she had known exactly what was coming.

*I'm just tired of being the easy one to blame,* she had said.

Adrian pressed his fingers hard against his eyes.

He had to find her before his mother did. He had to.

---

Upstairs, in the private sitting room at the end of the west wing, Eleanor Vance stood at the tall window with her back to the door.

The morning sun lit up the perfect garden below. The hedges were trimmed. The roses were blooming. Everything was in its proper place, the way Eleanor liked it.

Except one thing.

"Morrison," she said into the phone. "I don't care what time it is. Listen to me carefully."

On the other end of the line, a man's sleepy voice answered. "Yes, Mrs. Vance."

"My son's wife has run away. She's carrying his child."

There was a short silence. Then the voice became sharp and awake. "I see. What would you like me to do?"

"Find her. Use whoever you need. Pay whatever it costs." Eleanor's fingers tightened on the curtain. "And when you find her, I want papers ready. Custody papers. A judge who will sign them fast. Doctors who will say she isn't fit to raise a child."

"That may take some time, Mrs. Vance. She hasn't done anything wrong."

"She ran away in the middle of the night with no money, no home, and no job. She hid a pregnancy from her own husband." Eleanor's voice was like frost on glass. "That sounds like a woman who is not thinking clearly. Don't you agree?"

A pause. "I understand."

"Good."

"And Mrs. Vance... what happens to the mother? After the child is born?"

Eleanor looked down at the garden. At the roses. At the wide green lawn where, one day soon, a little Vance heir would learn to walk. Her heir. Her blood. Raised her way, in her house, with her name.

She did not even have to think about the answer.

"When she is found, the child stays with us," Eleanor said softly.

She let go of the curtain.

"The mother doesn't matter."

Outside the sitting room, in the dim hallway, a silver tray slipped from a pair of shaking old hands and hit the marble floor with a crash.

Eleanor spun around.

Mrs. Carter stood frozen in the doorway, broken teacups all around her feet.

She had heard every word.

Celeste left the house before sunrise.Mrs. Carter was waiting at the back gate in a plain brown coat. "Dr. Lin is expecting you, Madam," she whispered. "Come quickly."His clinic was small and quiet, hidden behind a flower shop. Dr. Lin asked no questions. Strong. Like a bird's wings.Celeste stopped breathing."That is your baby's heartbeat," Dr. Lin said gently. "Perfect."Tears ran down her face before she could stop them. For two days she had been afraid, planning, running. She had not once stopped to feel. Now it hit her all at once. *You're real. You're really here.*Mrs. Carter squeezed her hand.
