Chapter 1

Penulis: Nameless
I could have married Beatrice Sherbird six years ago.

She just never knew that I was the one who orchestrated every missed chance between us.

That was because I had woken up to the truth.

This world was nothing more than a tragic novel.

Beatrice was the female lead. My brother, Aldric Quimby, was the male lead.

I was just a lovesick fool of a side character.

Our families had been close neighbors for years. Both Beatrice and Aldric were three years older than I was.

She and I could barely be called childhood friends.

Still, Beatrice had always looked after me with extra care since we were little.

I assumed she had feelings for me.

From a very young age, she had been there through my lows and my highs.

She had been part of my life for a full twenty-two years. Loving her felt as natural as breathing.

I could not even remember when I had first started falling for her.

I still recalled playing house as children.

Beatrice had said she would be my mother. Aldric would be my father, and I would be their little darling.

I had cried and thrown my toy car to the floor, insisting that I should be the father instead.

I had announced that I would marry Beatrice someday.

Aldric had laughed and given me a gentle push toward Beatrice. “Alright, alright. You marry her, then.”

Back then, Beatrice never turned me down either.

She called me “dear” as she placed her grandmother’s floral scarf on her head like a bridal veil.

I was only five years old that year.

From the moment I saw that veil on her, I started a beautiful dream. That dream went on for seventeen years.

It continued until Valentine’s Day of my junior year in college. That day happened to be a weekend.

I was out shopping with my roommate. That was when I saw Beatrice and Aldric walking together.

She gently picked a leaf out of his hair.

She even bought Aldric some chocolate.

“Conan, Beatrice actually gave him chocolate! Do you think she likes him? Does he know you like her?”

That day, my whole world felt like it was falling apart.

People could turn bad in an instant. I felt like nobody loved me anymore.

Jealousy was like a seed. After it sprouted, it grew completely out of control.

I could not accept that the woman I had loved for so many years had feelings for someone else.

So, at my graduation celebration party, I slipped something into Beatrice’s drink.

I took her away early and brought her back to my place.

She was unable to control herself. The moment we walked through the door, she grabbed me and pulled me into the bedroom.

The kisses came fast and heavy. They moved from my lips down to my stomach and slowly spread all over my body.

I felt excited, but I was also terrified.

I did not only want to have her for myself. I also wanted Aldric to walk in and see this mess.

This scheme would have forced Beatrice to marry me.

But right then, I woke up to a strange awareness.

Scenes from years later flooded my mind.

Beatrice thought she had slept with me while drunk and that her reputation had been ruined. She agreed to marry me soon after.

Not long into our marriage, she found out the truth.

From that moment on, she resented me. Our life together fell into complete disarray.

During one heated argument, she pushed me down the stairs. I ended up paralyzed and unable to care for myself.

Aldric, on the other hand, never married anyone.

Later, he died in a traffic accident while on a trip. A vehicle struck him and took his life.

On the day of his death, Beatrice rushed out of the house like a madwoman.

She abandoned me in my gravely ill state.

No one stayed to look after me. I died alone in my bed.

Only after death did I realize that this world was a tragic novel.

All because of my jealousy alone, every single person lost in the end. None of us met a good ending.

“What’s on your mind? How could you zone out at such a time?” Beatrice’s soft voice pulled me back to the moment.

I felt her warm breath against my ear.

I reached up and touched her cheek as tears ran down my face.

Her eyes were stunningly beautiful. But she never truly loved me.

The woman who had been so full of desire looked panicked.

“Why are you crying? Don’t you feel the same way about me...?”

I did like her.

I loved her with every fiber of my being.

I might be the villain, but I was not cruel enough to want everyone to die.

“Beatrice, I’m regretting this. I’m sorry. We should stop this right now.”

She was at a loss. In the next instant, she lost her composure.

Aldric walked in right as we were tussling.

“Just because you think you’re the villain, you assume you’re just the side character?”“What else could it be?”She shook her head and smiled bitterly. “Beatrice is the only one in the book who died of natural causes. That makes her the one true protagonist. “We generally call the man with the deepest bond to the female lead the male lead. Other than growing up together as childhood friends, she has nothing with your brother. “So, you are the male lead.”...I had not seen Beatrice for a long time. She did not answer my calls either.I had no choice but to go to her house. She was around when I got to her house and knocked on her door. She must have just gotten off work because her pencil skirt was still on.“Have a seat,” she said coldly. It was clear that my rejection that day had hurt her deeply. The way she looked at me was tinged with sorrow.“If you hate me that much, why are you here? Is something urgent?”“I don’t hate you.”For once, I was dying to come

Beatrice had replied: [Okay, fine. I’ll be gentler next time.]Next time?!I was so embarrassed that I wished I could disappear.Up ahead, Aldric and Misty turned to us at the same time and gave me a thumbs-up.I was at a loss for a moment. Beatrice also took the opportunity to question me.“Conan, it’s been eight years. It’s also my fault I waited this long to finally work up the courage to ask you this. Do you want to be my boyfriend?”At that moment, time stood still. She was all I could see, lit up and beautiful in the light. How perfect that would be if only this were the novel’s ending. “No. We wouldn’t end well together.”I rejected her and quickened my pace, walking past Aldric and Misty.I did not dare look back. I could not bear to see Beatrice’s eyes....After that day, Misty still came by every day to keep Aldric company. However, Beatrice never showed up again. One evening, after dinner, Misty helped Aldric settle in for his evening nap.She then came

“You know what? They’re right. What you did back then was wrong, and I shouldn’t have let it slide.“You need to face the consequences.”My heart leaped into my throat as I asked, “What are you doing?”She lowered her head and bit down on my collarbone, sucking it hard.“Are you out of your mind?!”I pushed her away with all my might.Even so, she left one mark after another on my body.“Snap out of it!”She looked at me with a bitter expression and said, “I don’t believe you have a girlfriend.“If you really have one, tell her to come fight me.”When I left her place, all I could say was, “You’re impossible!”Beatrice had changed. The Beatrice of the past had always been gentle and soft-spoken.The current one was completely unpredictable, and she even carried a certain unsettling side about her.In all those flashes of the future I had seen, the Beatrice I fought with day in and day out was never this difficult to read. For the past few days, Beatrice kept coming aroun

Something snapped inside me.Even though both of us were still dressed, the sensation was so intense that my hand reacted as if it were being burned.I tried to pull away, but she held on even tighter. The air between us grew thick with unspoken tension.“Beatrice, you’re drunk...”“Conan, isn’t this exactly how you touched me back then? Why are you pulling away now? You didn’t hold back at all when you had your way with me eight years ago.”Even though we were only intimate once, what she said made those memories come flooding back. They made me feel utterly ashamed.“Are you recalling it? You’re blushing.”Only then did I realize that Beatrice was rubbing her cheek against mine.“Conan, you don’t actually have a girlfriend, do you? Because a guy with a girlfriend wouldn’t react like this.”She kissed my lips as she added, “Why don’t you finish what you wanted to start eight years ago?”Her gaze in the dim room bewitched me. I could not resist indulging her.She leaned he

Misty was about to say something, but my face went pale.I told her, “Please, stop talking...”She rolled her eyes, turned around, and walked off.In the end, I did not have the courage to see Beatrice again. All I could see in my head was that image of me being crippled and dying alone in a filthy bed.So, I went straight to Taylor and put in my resignation. My position did not really require much of a handover, anyway. In just an hour, I had packed up my things, walked out of that building, and never looked back.I had to change my number again.I felt like I was running for my life.I moved from Caldon to Dantrell. This time, I was smarter about it. I asked Aldric to keep me posted on Beatrice’s whereabouts. Whenever she came to my city, I would flee. She would always arrive right after I left.I kept that up until I got recruited by a company overseas. That was when I finally stopped running.I worked abroad for six years. I started with nothing and built a good

Aldric was not alone. Beatrice’s friend, Misty Fowler, was also there. They thought Beatrice had lost her mind, so they pulled her off me.Aldric even slapped her across the face. The scene was chaotic. At that moment, I finally understood just how wrong I had been.“It’s not Beatrice’s fault. It was me.”I confessed everything.Everyone fell silent. They all stared at me like I was a stranger.Misty gritted her teeth and said, while pointing at me angrily, “You know what you did was illegal, right?”“I know. I’m willing to face the consequences.”In the end, Beatrice still stepped in front of me.“He’s just a kid who didn’t know any better. He was messing around. Don’t blow this out of proportion.”“Are you seriously still defending him at a time like this? He’s twenty-two years old! You can’t still call him a kid!”I looked at Beatrice with tear-filled eyes.I wanted to take her to the hospital, but when I grabbed her arm, she shook me off.Aldric sighed and said, “I
