Chapter 3

Auteur: Shirley
I stared at the flood of incoming calls on the screen and did not answer a single one.

Ten minutes later, the door was kicked open.

He leaned against the doorframe, panting.

He had rushed back so fast that the gunshot wound on his shoulder had completely torn open. Blood soaked his new shirt all over again.

Flynn acted like he could not feel the pain. He rushed in like a madman and tore the divorce papers into pieces.

That still was not enough. He pulled out a lighter and burned the scraps to ashes.

Only after doing all this did he look up, his deep eyes locking onto me.

Dangerous and predatory.

"Audrey, you know full well I would rather die than let you go."

He stepped closer to me. "You must know the divorce papers were just Cleo playing a trick on her own."

"Why did you still sign it?"

Without giving me a chance to answer, he leaned down and pressed against me. He kissed me forcefully, and it was almost brutal.

I could not breathe, and I soon tasted blood.

I shoved him away and wiped my lips hard, as if trying to wipe off something dirty.

I panted and let out a cold laugh. "Right, you would rather die than leave me, but you can cheat on me without a second thought."

"Flynn, you really are something."

His movements instantly froze.

"What, did you think I loved you so deeply that even if you slept with someone else, I would humbly beg you to stay?"

Meeting my mocking gaze, Flynn's expression softened.

He lowered his head, his nose gently brushing against my cheek in an almost pathetic way.

"I was wrong, darling." His voice was hoarse. "What do you want me to do to make this right?"

"Tell Cleo to get rid of the baby."

He did not hesitate. "Okay."

I did not speak. I just laughed softly.

"Cleo, did you hear that?"

"The baby in your belly, and your position. He can give them all up for me."

A heart-wrenching sob came from my phone.

"Flynn! You bastard!"

Flynn's face changed drastically.

I smiled and picked up my phone. The screen clearly showed an ongoing call.

I had him on a call with his little lover this whole time.

On the other end of the line, Cleo was crying hysterically. Her emotions completely broke down.

"Flynn, you turned your back on me and our baby first! You will regret it!"

She hung up right after saying that.

Flynn looked utterly frustrated. His jawline was completely tense, and curses were already on the tip of his tongue.

But meeting my gaze, he forcefully gritted his teeth and held his anger back.

He pushed past me, turned around, and stormed out the door.

By the time I slowly followed the tracking app on my phone and found the family's abandoned warehouse, the two of them were already putting on a deranged scene.

They were cursing at each other hysterically while pulling at each other in despair.

They were slapping each other one second and clinging to each other the next.

Seeing me show up, Flynn instantly straightened his back and pulled Cleo behind him again.

He suppressed his temper and stared at me with complicated eyes.

"Audrey, why did you follow us? What do you want? Cleo is extremely unstable right now. I am warning you, do not provoke her anymore!"

Cleo, however, suddenly stepped out from behind him. Tears were still on her face, but a light of pure certainty lit up in her eyes again.

She rushed over to me and leaned close to my ear.

"A man's words mean nothing."

"You cannot believe how he sweet-talks you. You have to see what he does when lives are on the line."

"I am carrying two lives right now. Take a guess. When he really has to choose between us, who will Flynn pick?"

As soon as she finished speaking, she violently kicked over a nearby gasoline drum and pulled out a lighter.

The moment she dropped the lighter, the flames shot up instantly.

The raging fire instantly roared upward. It split the warehouse in half, trapping me and her on opposite sides of the flames.

Thick black smoke and intense heat swept toward us.

"Flynn! This is your own flesh and blood in my belly! If you have the guts, then just watch me burn to death!"

Cleo's shout carried both panic and certainty.

On the other side of the wall of fire, Flynn's face twisted in the dancing shadows of the flames.

He only hesitated for a few seconds before rushing to her side. Then he scooped Cleo up and charged toward the door.

"Audrey, I know you know how to survive. You can find the exit yourself, but Cleo cannot handle the smoke!"

Cleo lay in his arms, looked back over his shoulder, and flashed me a highly triumphant cold smile.

She silently mouthed the words to me, "This time, I won."

I smiled right back at her through the flames.

"Maybe we both win?"

She was visibly stunned and stared at me like I was a deadly threat.

But I did not call for help, nor did I struggle to run toward the exit.

Flynn was right. I knew exactly how to survive.

But just now, watching his back as he protected someone else without a second thought, I suddenly realized something. He refused to let me go while I was alive. But what if I made him think I died in the fire?

The oxygen was slowly being swallowed up by the raging flames.

I stared at the retreating figures holding each other tight and quietly stepped back into the shadows deep within the firelight.

Goodbye, Flynn.

I was just about to quietly leave through the air vent.

But that silhouette in the firelight suddenly stopped.

Late at night, a few days later, Flynn asked to meet me again. The location was set at a hidden underground bar owned by his family.Everything was different now. Even the alcohol tasted different. He asked me, "Audrey, what price do I have to pay for you to forgive me?"I casually swirled my wine glass. "You have taken over so much of my territory. How about you start by giving me all the casinos and legitimate businesses under your control?"He did not even blink. He immediately had the lawyer behind him hand over the documents and signed all those massive assets over to me right on the spot.I smiled."You forced me to kneel and bow my head, and you let Cleo slap me across the face."He gently took my hand and used it to slap himself hard across the face twice.Seeing I had no reaction, he reached out for the dagger on the table.I raised an eyebrow and looked at him."What happened to avenging your kid?"Flynn immediately shook his head in panic."Only you matter! As we walked out the doors of the banquet hall, the sudden roar of an engine came from below the steps.I looked up and saw Cleo sitting in the driver's seat of a red sports car. With the gas pedal floored, she was speeding straight toward me.Behind the windshield, her face was flushed bright red, and her eyes were completely bloodshot. She looked absolutely crazy."Audrey!!! Go to hell!!!"The piercing screech of tires rolling over the cracks in the stairs filled the entire entrance. But she suddenly screamed and slammed on the brakes.Because Flynn had rushed out and stood right in front of me, blocking my body. The tires scraped across the ground, sending up a thick burning smell, and slid forward another half meter. Finally, the scorching hot front bumper stopped barely an inch from Flynn's knees."Flynn, you absolute maniac!"Cleo stumbled and kicked open the car door, falling to the ground. She broke down, holding her head and crying bitterly."I gave you my whole heart and soul

Riccardo and I walked arm in arm into the exclusive Syndicate gala. This was not just a banquet. It was a declaration to the entire underground world that the former Principessa was back.Everyone looked at me, their faces full of disbelief."Audrey? Where on earth has she been for these past five years?""Riccardo almost tore the West Coast apart looking for her. I thought she was dead a long time ago."Just as everyone was whispering, Flynn barged in.The hall was filled with guests, yet he, a family Don, was an absolute mess.He was wearing that same crumpled, dust-covered shirt.Somewhere along the way, he had taken a hit to his side. It was probably from a shootout with other gangs while desperately searching for me over the past few days. He looked like he had just crawled out of the ruins. He acted like he could not see the shocked stares around him. He walked straight through the crowd right up to me.The clinking of glasses and the jazz music all came to a sudden halt.Everyon

Cleo's smile froze on her face."What?""Audrey's wedding rings, the ones you took from her bedroom."Flynn said, "Give them back."The room was quiet for a long time. The color on Cleo's face completely drained away bit by bit, and her lips began to tremble. She sat up violently. Her arm scraped against the bedrail, seeping more blood."Flynn, what do you mean?! I swallowed all those pills!""I almost died! And the very first thing you ask when you walk through that door is about that woman's rings?!""Hand them over."The man did not even blink. His voice had no emotion whatsoever.Cleo felt like she had been slapped. She froze completely. After a long moment, she let out a broken scream. The knuckles clutching the bedsheets were bone white as she cried her heart out."Flynn, did you ever really love me?! Even just a little bit?!""Will I never measure up to her in your eyes?!"Flynn looked at her face, twisted by ugly jealousy. He just felt sick to his stomach. There was not a singl

Flynn turned the entire city upside down.Private airports, ports, the underground black market, and even the smuggling routes were searched inside and out.Absolutely nothing. He even had people check the emergency records of every hospital in the city, afraid she had gotten hurt.Still nothing.Audrey was as if she had been completely wiped off the face of the earth. The broken security cameras at the estate were finally repaired by the security team.Standing in the empty living room, he stared at the final frame on the screen. At the estate's main gate, a man in a black suit opened the car door for her.She bent over and got in. Her side profile was perfectly illuminated by the porch light. The man's face was cut off just outside the frame. But Flynn recognized that back.A chill instantly spread through his body. The man's hands trembled uncontrollably.Only one freezing thought, like plunging into an ice cave, remained in his mind.It is over. He found her.Riccardo, the man who

A tall, broad-shouldered man stood on the steps, his silhouette blocking the sunlight. His facial features could not be seen clearly, but a cold, commanding presence washed over me before his voice did.He was still clutching a crumpled screenshot in his hand, showing the exact street view from my live video. He looked down at me, raised his hand, and tucked the loose strands of hair behind my ear.We had not seen each other in five years. His very first words were painfully hoarse."You have lost weight, my Principessa."It was Riccardo. My eyes suddenly stung with tears. Then I grabbed his wrist and smiled again. My live video had not been for nothing. He got my signal."Riccardo, take me home."An SUV was already waiting at the door. The body was riddled with bullet holes, clearly having just forced its way through the estate's outer security perimeter. We climbed in, the door slammed shut with a bang, and the tires squealed violently against the ground as the car sped off, kicking
