Chapter 2

Penulis: Huge Whale
At 10:00 pm that night, my family came home after their sushi dinner.

Jasmine was carrying a takeout box.

"Here. This is for you. That place was so expensive. I didn't even want to order too much, but I specifically saved a few pieces for you."

I opened the box. Inside were four dried-out seaweed rolls, the rice around the edges already hard. There was no salmon or shrimp, just a few strips of cucumber and some imitation crab meat. It was obvious they were leftovers no one else wanted.

"Thanks."

I closed the box and pushed it aside.

Jasmine frowned. "Josh, I carried this all the way home for you, and you're giving me this attitude?"

Mom came in when she heard the commotion. "What's all the fuss about?"

"Mom, I brought him food, and he won't even touch it!" Jasmine hooked her arm around Mom's and pouted.

Mom glanced at me, her eyes full of impatience. "Your sister was thinking of you. Don't be ungrateful."

"Just leave it there. I'll heat it up tomorrow morning," I said calmly.

Mom couldn't be bothered to argue anymore. She turned to Jasmine and said, "Jas, wasn't there a skincare set you had your eye on? I'll take you to buy it tomorrow."

"Thanks, Mom!"

The two of them chatted and laughed as they left. The door closed behind them, cutting off the light from the living room. I threw the box of sushi into the trash can beneath my desk.

The next morning, I got ready to leave.

Dad was sitting on the couch, reading the newspaper. Without even looking up, he asked, "Where are you going?"

"I'm going to the restaurant on South Street for a server interview," I said.

"Mmm." He turned another page and added, "While you're out, stop by the dry cleaner and pick up Jon's suit."

"Okay."

I put on my shoes, opened the door, and walked out.

But I didn't go to the restaurant. Instead, I headed to the local police station with my backpack. Inside were my ID and household registration records I had secretly taken out in the middle of the night.

I handed the documents to the officer at the counter. "I'd like to transfer my legal residency."

The officer looked at the confidentiality agreement bearing the official seal. "Kid, it's a tough place out there. Are you sure about this?"

"I'm sure." I looked at him and nodded.

The officer typed a few things into the computer. The printer hummed as it began printing. A brand new household registration transfer document was handed to me. On the original household registration document, the page bearing my name, Joshua Hayes, was stamped with the bright red words "Transferred Out."

From that moment on, my official address and records were no longer tied to this family.

I found a copy shop nearby and scanned and uploaded my household registration documents and personal identification materials. Every procedure was completed.

On the way home, I stopped by the dry cleaner and picked up Jonathan's suit.

When I got back, Mom happened to be carrying a plate of barbecue ribs out of the kitchen.

"How did the job search go?"

I hung the suit on the rack behind the door and said, "I start tomorrow. They pay 120 dollars a day."

"That's good."

Mom set the meat in front of Jonathan. He picked up a rib and stuffed it into his mouth, his brows furrowing as he spoke. "Oh, Mom. My large loan is still being processed. But I need to take the investors out for dinner tomorrow and give them some gifts. I'm still a few thousand dollars short."

The air around the dinner table went still for a second. Dad put his fork down.

"We don't really have much extra money right now. Jas will need living expenses once school starts too."

Jonathan sighed, poking at his food with his fork. "Maybe I should just take out a loan from a loan shark."

Mom immediately panicked. "You can't do that!"

She thought for a moment, then suddenly turned to me. "Josh, didn't Grandma leave you a gold bracelet when she passed away?"

My hand froze.

Grandma knew I was the least favored child in the family. Before she died, she secretly slipped the gold bracelet she had worn her entire life into my hand, telling me to keep it for when I got married someday.

"That bracelet weighs at least two ounces. At today's gold prices, it could sell for around ten thousand dollars," Mom said as she stared at me.

I looked up. "That was Grandma's gift to me."

"Can't you lend it to Jon just to get him through this crisis?" Mom's expression hardened. "He's your own brother. Do you really have the heart to watch him take out a loan from a loan shark?"

Dad tapped the table. "What are you arguing about? We're family. Those in favor of taking the bracelet to get through this, raise your hand."

Dad was the first to raise his hand. Mom followed without hesitation. Jonathan's eyes darted away for a moment before he raised his hand too.

"Think of it as me taking a loan from you, Josh. Once my company starts making money, I'll pay you back double."

Jasmine bit down on her fork and raised her hand with a bright smile.

After years of blaming and complaining, they finally learned what it felt like to have things taken away from them and to be abandoned. As for me, I never paid attention to their lives again.Five years later, at a launch site in the Northwest Podin Desert, a silver-white rocket pointed toward the heavens."Fire!"At the command from the control room, the rocket erupted with a ma

I put on my thick windbreaker and followed the guard toward the main gate.A tall barbed-wire fence surrounded the entrance, with yellow security tape stretched beyond it. The wind howled, whipping loose snow across the ground.About 30 feet away, I saw them. Dad was bundled in a thick down jacket, shivering violently from the cold. Mom's face was bright red from the wind, while Jonathan hunched his shoulders and stomped his feet repeatedly. When they saw me walk out, they froze for a moment.I was wearing the facility's army green uniform. My hair was shaved short. The wind and sand had roughened my skin, and my shoulders had grown noticeably broader. I was no longer the timid second son who wore torn old clothes."Josh! Josh!" Mom was the first to react. She rushed to the fence, tears and snot streaming down her face. "We finally found you! You little brat! Why did you come to this miserable place?" She sobbed bitterly. But I felt nothing."What are you doing here?" I

Professor Campbell paused for a moment, then smiled. "I see. It's a good vote." He patted my shoulder and said, "Go check the equipment in Sector D. You're in charge today.""Yes, sir."I tightened my grip on the shovel and headed toward the laboratory. The winter wind was fierce, but I didn't take a single step back.Just before the New Year holidays, the Hayes family had their biggest fight yet.Jonathan's startup finally collapsed completely. Not only had he failed to make money, but he now owed investors more than 300 thousand dollars.Debt collectors started calling the house. Someone even sprayed "Pay Your Debts" in red paint along the apartment hallway.Dad's blood pressure spiked so badly that he ended up in the hospital. Mom sat beside his bed, wiping away tears. She finally couldn't hold back and said to Jasmine, "Jas, don't you have some savings from birthdays and your allowance? Give some of it to Jon to help him get through this."Jasmine took a step backward and

Mom couldn't remember how she got home. When she pushed open the front door, Dad was sitting on the couch, smoking. The living room was thick with cigarette smoke."Did you find him?" Without turning around, Dad asked impatiently.Mom said nothing. She absentmindedly walked to the coffee table and placed the photocopied confirmation letter they had gotten from Mr. Lawson on top of it."What's this?" Dad picked up the document and glanced at it. Cigarette ash fell onto his pant leg, but he didn't even notice."Northwest… National classified research program?" He shot to his feet, his voice rising several octaves. "That's impossible! How could he qualify for something like this?"Just then, Jonathan staggered in through the front door, reeking of alcohol. He had spent the afternoon trying to salvage his business by meeting with investors. But in the end, he'd been humiliated by having a drink thrown in his face."Dad, don't look at that!" Jonathan snatched the paper and ripped

The freshman registration area at the local teachers college was packed. Jonathan and Mom stood in the middle of the crowd, both sweating under the heat."Mom, are you sure Josh never showed up?" Jonathan tugged irritably at his collar."I already asked the counselor. They said no student named Joshua Hayes ever enrolled," Mom replied, her face pale. The past three months had been a disaster for my family. With one less person listed in the household registration and insufficient collateral to secure financing, Jonathan's business loan application had been rejected by the bank. Unable to pay the rent for his office space, he'd been kicked out and forced to run his startup from home.Jasmine had finally gotten her wish and converted my old bedroom into a walk-in closet. But she soon discovered that there was nobody to wake up at 6:00 am every morning to iron her clothes anymore. There was no one to carry her online shopping packages up six flights of stairs.Dad's beloved coff

"What… What is this?"Dad shot to his feet so fast that the household registration documents nearly slipped from his hands.Hearing the commotion, Mom rushed out of the kitchen. "Honey, what's wrong?"She leaned over to take a look, then froze. "Transferred out? Josh has transferred out of our household? Where did he transfer to?"Jonathan gulped. "I just looked more carefully. It says he's been transferred to a confidential facility somewhere in the Northwest.""A confidential location?" Dad's brows furrowed. "He's a kid who just graduated high school. Why is he going to a confidential facility?"At that moment, Jasmine emerged from the bathroom with a face mask on."Oh, come on. Why is everyone freaking out? He's obviously scared we'll make him attend the teachers college, so he's pretending to run away from home. He's probably just working in some factory somewhere. As if he'd qualify to be assigned to some confidential facility."Her words seemed to calm Dad slightly. He
