"Joshua, do you understand the situation regarding your tuition fees?"

Dad sat at the head of the dinner table, cradling the same coffee pot he'd cherished for over a decade. He gently blew on his cup of coffee before taking a sip.

I was wiping grease stains from the tabletop with a dishcloth. I replied flatly, "I understand."

Mom came out of the kitchen carrying a plate of sliced watermelon and set it on the coffee table. "That's good," she said.

Letting out a relieved sigh, she casually nudged the plate toward my brother, Jonathan Hayes.

"Jon is at a critical stage with his startup. We can't let the cash flow run dry. Once his company gets on its feet, our whole family will benefit from it."

Jonathan was wearing headphones, both hands flying across the screen. Without even looking up, he opened his mouth and bit into a slice of watermelon Mom held out for him.

"Thanks, Mom."

Then, he turned to me and, with his mouth still full, said, "Josh, once I secure this investment, I'll take you to pick out a new phone. That piece of junk you're using is so slow that it takes half a day to get a reply from you. It's so annoying."

I glanced down at the old phone sticking halfway out of my pocket. It had been passed down by my younger sister, Jasmine Hayes, when she upgraded to a new model.

There was a huge spiderweb-like crack down the top right corner of the screen, and I had to squint just to read anything on it.

"No need," I said as I rinsed the dishcloth and hung it beside the sink.

Jasmine was sitting in front of the mirror, doing her makeup.

"Josh, stop looking so miserable all the time. Everyone voted that day. If you stay here, we can see each other every day. Besides, why do you need so much money just to go to some crappy local teachers college?"

Some crappy teachers college.

Two weeks ago, I received an early admission offer from North City University, one of the top five universities in the country. I had stayed up countless nights and gone through three boxes of pen refills to earn that opportunity.

But Jasmine said she couldn't bear to see me go so far away from home.

So, Dad called a family vote. Four to one. My place at North City University was replaced with a spot at a teachers college just three stops away from home. And now, even the tuition for that college was going to be taken away from me.

"I'll find a part-time job this afternoon," I turned around and said to them.

Dad finally tore his eyes away from the TV and glanced at me. "That's more like it. Family is supposed to help each other. Jon is the eldest son. He'll have to carry the family's name someday. It won't hurt you to contribute a little more."

I said nothing and went back to my room.

It was a tiny room that contained nothing more than a single bed and an old desk. Sitting on the desk was my acceptance letter from the local teachers college.

I turned on my old computer. There was an unread email sitting in my inbox.

Sender: Northwest Podin Desert Key Research Base

Subject: Final Confirmation Regarding Joshua Hayes's Classified Research Project

I opened the email.

"Dear Joshua Hayes, your application has passed the final review. This project is a national-level classified research program. Tuition will be fully covered, and you will receive a monthly living allowance.

"Note: The project site is located in the Northwest Podin Desert. Conditions are harsh, and you will be required to sign a confidentiality agreement. Once you confirm your participation, you may not leave the facility without authorization for five years, and you may not contact the outside world freely.

"Please upload your personal identification documents and proof of your household registration transfer within three days."

Without hesitation, I clicked on the button to confirm my participation.

Jonathan's laughter rang out from the living room.

"Jas, I'll treat you to dinner tonight. Let's go to that new sushi restaurant."

"Yay! I want salmon sashimi!"

Jasmine jumped out of her chair in excitement.

Mom's voice was filled with laughter too.

"Go easy on the raw fish, you two. You can't eat too much of it."

"Mom, you're coming too. Dad, let's go! Go, go, go!"

The four of them happily discussed what they were going to have for dinner. No one came to knock on my door. No one asked if I was coming.

I stared at the words "Confirmation Successful" on my computer screen. Then, I began taking inventory of the few warm clothes I owned.

Winters in the Northwest must be freezing.

The commotion at the gate didn't last long. After the guards fired a warning shot, Mom, Dad, Jasmine, and Jonathan left with their tails between their legs.I later heard that when they got home, Jonathan was unable to repay his debts, and one of his creditors broke his leg. Dad fell completely ill and became bedridden, needing someone to care for him. Jasmine couldn't stand the chaos at home. She quickly found herself a boyfriend from out of town and ran away with him. She never came back. The family that had once maintained a facade of harmony through democratic votes finally fell completely apart. After years of blaming and complaining, they finally learned what it felt like to have things taken away from them and to be abandoned. As for me, I never paid attention to their lives again.Five years later, at a launch site in the Northwest Podin Desert, a silver-white rocket pointed toward the heavens."Fire!"At the command from the control room, the rocket erupted with a ma

I put on my thick windbreaker and followed the guard toward the main gate.A tall barbed-wire fence surrounded the entrance, with yellow security tape stretched beyond it. The wind howled, whipping loose snow across the ground.About 30 feet away, I saw them. Dad was bundled in a thick down jacket, shivering violently from the cold. Mom's face was bright red from the wind, while Jonathan hunched his shoulders and stomped his feet repeatedly. When they saw me walk out, they froze for a moment.I was wearing the facility's army green uniform. My hair was shaved short. The wind and sand had roughened my skin, and my shoulders had grown noticeably broader. I was no longer the timid second son who wore torn old clothes."Josh! Josh!" Mom was the first to react. She rushed to the fence, tears and snot streaming down her face. "We finally found you! You little brat! Why did you come to this miserable place?" She sobbed bitterly. But I felt nothing."What are you doing here?" I

Professor Campbell paused for a moment, then smiled. "I see. It's a good vote." He patted my shoulder and said, "Go check the equipment in Sector D. You're in charge today.""Yes, sir."I tightened my grip on the shovel and headed toward the laboratory. The winter wind was fierce, but I didn't take a single step back.Just before the New Year holidays, the Hayes family had their biggest fight yet.Jonathan's startup finally collapsed completely. Not only had he failed to make money, but he now owed investors more than 300 thousand dollars.Debt collectors started calling the house. Someone even sprayed "Pay Your Debts" in red paint along the apartment hallway.Dad's blood pressure spiked so badly that he ended up in the hospital. Mom sat beside his bed, wiping away tears. She finally couldn't hold back and said to Jasmine, "Jas, don't you have some savings from birthdays and your allowance? Give some of it to Jon to help him get through this."Jasmine took a step backward and

Mom couldn't remember how she got home. When she pushed open the front door, Dad was sitting on the couch, smoking. The living room was thick with cigarette smoke."Did you find him?" Without turning around, Dad asked impatiently.Mom said nothing. She absentmindedly walked to the coffee table and placed the photocopied confirmation letter they had gotten from Mr. Lawson on top of it."What's this?" Dad picked up the document and glanced at it. Cigarette ash fell onto his pant leg, but he didn't even notice."Northwest… National classified research program?" He shot to his feet, his voice rising several octaves. "That's impossible! How could he qualify for something like this?"Just then, Jonathan staggered in through the front door, reeking of alcohol. He had spent the afternoon trying to salvage his business by meeting with investors. But in the end, he'd been humiliated by having a drink thrown in his face."Dad, don't look at that!" Jonathan snatched the paper and ripped

The freshman registration area at the local teachers college was packed. Jonathan and Mom stood in the middle of the crowd, both sweating under the heat."Mom, are you sure Josh never showed up?" Jonathan tugged irritably at his collar."I already asked the counselor. They said no student named Joshua Hayes ever enrolled," Mom replied, her face pale. The past three months had been a disaster for my family. With one less person listed in the household registration and insufficient collateral to secure financing, Jonathan's business loan application had been rejected by the bank. Unable to pay the rent for his office space, he'd been kicked out and forced to run his startup from home.Jasmine had finally gotten her wish and converted my old bedroom into a walk-in closet. But she soon discovered that there was nobody to wake up at 6:00 am every morning to iron her clothes anymore. There was no one to carry her online shopping packages up six flights of stairs.Dad's beloved coff

"What… What is this?"Dad shot to his feet so fast that the household registration documents nearly slipped from his hands.Hearing the commotion, Mom rushed out of the kitchen. "Honey, what's wrong?"She leaned over to take a look, then froze. "Transferred out? Josh has transferred out of our household? Where did he transfer to?"Jonathan gulped. "I just looked more carefully. It says he's been transferred to a confidential facility somewhere in the Northwest.""A confidential location?" Dad's brows furrowed. "He's a kid who just graduated high school. Why is he going to a confidential facility?"At that moment, Jasmine emerged from the bathroom with a face mask on."Oh, come on. Why is everyone freaking out? He's obviously scared we'll make him attend the teachers college, so he's pretending to run away from home. He's probably just working in some factory somewhere. As if he'd qualify to be assigned to some confidential facility."Her words seemed to calm Dad slightly. He
