Chapter 1

I pressed the air conditioner remote and waited for the relief of a cool breeze, but it never came.

The next second, Rena Laird’s shrill voice rang out from upstairs. “Air conditioning clearance sale! Enjoy all-day cooling for just $9.9.”

When I heard that familiar yet nauseating voice, I realized I had travelled back in time.

Before I could even mourn the fact that I had been baked to a crisp in my previous timeline, beads of sweat were already rolling down my cheeks.

I pulled out my phone and immediately searched for the nearest sauna. Without a second thought, I bought a ticket.

Just as I was about to head out, I remembered I had not turned off the AC. So I turned around and turned it off.

The next second, complaints came from upstairs.

“What’s going on, boss? Didn’t you promise all-day service? It’s already this hot, and we’ve only just arrived!”

“Yeah, it’s sweltering. Fix this fast, or we want our money back!”

I had barely reached the door when I heard the sound of heavy footsteps thudding down the stairs.

I closed the door, and Rena appeared right in front of me.

She was soaked through with sweat too. There was even a hint of venom in her eyes.

“Mila, it’s 100 degrees Fahrenheit outside. Why aren’t you staying indoors where there’s air-conditioning? Where are you going?”

This was a repeat from my past life. When I stopped feeling the cool air, my first thought was that something had gone wrong with my body.

I spent a fortune on a full medical checkup at the hospital, but they never found the cause.

When I got home, my boyfriend said it had to be all in my head. He thoughtfully used my money to buy three air conditioners and crammed them into our apartment.

It did not take me wrong to realize something was off.

Rena’s house was air-conditioned around the clock, yet her electricity bill never went up.

When I confronted Rena, my boyfriend was lying in her arms. He even had an ice pop in his mouth.

Not only did he refuse to defend me, but he also mocked me.

“You claim to have a condition where you can’t feel the air conditioning, but I think you’re just too poor to afford it!

“Get out of here right now. Stop freeloading off Rena’s air conditioning.”

By the time I got home, the heat had completely overwhelmed me. When I fainted, I never woke up again.

Rio Leiz finally showed up with Rena to check in on me when the power went out.

By the time they discovered me, I had already turned into a charred, blackened corpse.

Even in death, I found no peace.

Rio launched a live stream online as the “first person to discover the air-conditioned room corpse.” He feasted on my misfortune.

“What business is it of yours where I go?”

Just then, Rio came downstairs.

“Mila Zupan, are you out of your mind? Rena was just being kind and looking out for you. How could you speak to her like that?

“Go back to your room right now and turn on the AC. It’s dangerous if you get heatstroke.”

I brushed Rio’s hand away. “Forget the AC. I’m going to go to a sauna.”

Rio finally realized that the soul-searing heat had not been an illusion. The system had truly transferred itself. All the heat that had been surrounding me was latching onto him.Rio started convulsing like a fish floundering on dry land. He lunged into the blind spot of the surveillance camera outside the sauna while pounding frantically at the glass door with both hands. His fingernails scraped long, bloody gashes into the glass.“Mila! Mila! I was wrong! I really was wrong!“I beg you. Come out quickly and unbind the system!”Through the glass, I sat down calmly.“What did you do wrong?” My voice was not loud, but it was clear enough for him to hear perfectly outside the door.Rio choked for a second. Then immediately confessed to all his crimes.“It was me and Rena who implanted the transfer system into the back of your neck! It was my idea. I said you really hated the heat, and your death could even be used as a gimmick! I contacted the funeral service to destroy the evid

Rena’s throat had already turned into a ring of charred, blackened folds. Every breath tore a layer of skin away.Seeing the cold smile on my face, Rena could only search for Rio.Rio was only three steps away. He had once held her close and said, “Don’t be afraid, I’ll always be there for you.” He was holding the fire extinguisher high, not to save her, but to bar the way between them. He was no different from warding off a rabid dog.“Rio, save me...”“Rena,” Rio narrowed his eyes. His voice wavering in the intense heat. “Take a look in the mirror.”He raised his hand and turned the smooth surface of the fire extinguisher toward her.In the distorted metal reflection, Rena saw her entire face covered in fist-sized blisters. Her left eyelid had melted like hot wax to her cheekbone, like a plastic bag doused in hot oil.She froze for half a second. Then, she let out an even sharper scream and lunged forward to grab Rio’s leg.“Get lost!”Rio jerked backward. His heel shattered

“System? What system are you talking about?”I pressed my ear against the fogged-up glass of the sauna. My face was etched with confusion, like I was hearing the word for the first time.Rena was already kneeling on the floor like a fish that had been left out in the sun for half a day. Her mouth foundered open and close. When she heard my retort, she threw her head back in despair. Her voice was hoarse and barely human. “It’s... it’s that cooling transfer system! You’ve been—Ahh—you’ve been bound to it! Get out here fast, and I’ll un-unbind you right away...”I scratched my ear, gave an innocent “Huh?” and casually set the digital timer back another ten minutes.“I really don’t get it,” I said slowly. “What exactly did you do? You make it sound like I’ve got some kind of cheat code installed.”With that, I turned to the live stream camera with a smile. “Don’t listen to her nonsense, everyone. I’ve had this ability since I was a kid. I just discovered it today.”Rena’s blister

“It’s hot! It’s unbearably hot!!”Rena thrashed about frantically in the lobby like a fish tossed into a pot of boiling oil.Her white dress had long since become semi-transparent from sweat and clung to her skin. Every time she raised her arm, it felt like a layer of skin was being torn off.She staggered over to the front desk and grabbed the receptionist by the collar and shouted in a voice hoarse from the heat.“The AC is broken! How are you running the air conditioning here? Turn it down to below zero right now!”The young receptionist shuddered in fright and looked up at the vent above her head. The louvers were blowing cool air down with a whoosh. She looked back at Rena. Her gaze was filled with horror, as if she was staring at a severe patient who had just escaped a mental hospital.“Ma’am, we maintain a constant temperature of 70 degrees Fahrenheit. It feels very comfortable…”“Comfortable my butt!” Rena shrieked. The hot breath escaping her throat nearly set the air

I was right.Rena’s “cooling transfer system” was not a one-way drain. It was a temperature exchange.Even in the intense sauna, I felt unusually cool. But outside the sauna…“Ah!!!”Rena’s screams sounded like a tape being snapped. Each one was louder than the last.Even through two fire escape doors, I could picture her curled up on the floor while wailing in agony. Her skin had been scorched crimson by the sudden surge of 140 degrees Fahrenheit heat. Beads of sweat evaporated into white vapor the moment they broke through her skin. She was like a live shrimp tossed into boiling water.“Mila! Get the hell out here!”Rio’s roar followed immediately. His fists pounded against the sauna door, producing a dull “thud, thud” sound.I glanced down at my wristband. Time remaining: 09:47.The lock was electronic. It had been bolted shut from the inside. Without the administrator’s password, no one could open it.“Rena’s about to die! Her whole body is blistered from the heat! Do

To make sure they would not find me, I did not go to the nearest sauna. Instead, I chose one farther away.“Welcome...”“Ten hours, dry sauna, highest temperature.”I slapped my ID and phone down on the counter. My voice was hoarse and unrecognizable. The clerk was a young woman in her early twenties. She beamed a well-practiced frontdesk’s smile. She repeatedly checked the reservation details on the screen, then looked up at me. Sweat was dripping down my jaw. My T-shirt was soaked through.“Ma’am, 140 degrees Fahrenheit for ten hours could be fatal...” She swallowed hard, forcing the words “cremation” back down her throat. “Our shop only sells sessions of up to two hours at a time. You will have to come out in between to rehydrate and check your blood pressure.”“Are you afraid I’ll die in there?” I raised my hand to wipe the sweat from my eyelashes and smiled. “I’ve got accident insurance. I’ll name your shop as the beneficiary. Is that okay?”The young woman was speechless.
