Chapter 4

작가: Busy King
For the next few days, Scott did not call me once.

On the fourth day after the procedure, I had just come home from a follow-up appointment at the hospital. My abdomen was still aching faintly.

Scott set a thermos in front of me.

“Vanessa heard you haven’t had much of an appetite lately, so she made you some broth.”

I unscrewed the lid and was met with the sight of a layer of oil floating on top.

The doctor had warned me not to consume anything greasy so soon after the procedure, as it could increase the risk of bleeding.

Vanessa studied biology, not medicine. It was understandable that she did not know that. However, Scott should have.

My discharge instructions had been sitting on the coffee table. He had not read them even once.

I closed the thermos.

“No, thank you.”

Vanessa stood nearby, looking hurt.

“Mrs. Clement, I spent three hours making it.”

“You can drink it yourself.”

Scott’s expression immediately darkened.

“Natasha, do you always have to be so dismissive of other people’s kindness?”

I looked at him.

“Do you know why I can’t have it?”

“You clearly don’t want it. There’s no need to pretend there’s some other reason.”

“Scott,” I called. “The baby is gone.”

The room fell silent.

Vanessa dropped her purse.

Scott stared at me for a long moment, as if he could not make sense of what I had said.

“What did you say?”

“I terminated the pregnancy three days ago.”

All the color drained from his face.

A second later, he rushed over and seized my wrist.

“Say that again.”

His grip was painfully tight. His fingers were pressing directly onto the bruise left by the IV.

I winced but did not pull away.

“The baby is gone.”

“Why?”

His eyes were bloodshot with shock. His voice nearly broke.

“Natasha, how could you not tell me?”

I looked at him and suddenly found the question absurd.

“You were standing right outside when I signed the consent form.”

His grip went slack.

“I thought you were signing paperwork for the ultrasound.”

“Did you ever ask?”

His lips moved several times, but no words came out.

I pulled my hand free and handed him the medical report I had prepared.

“The baby had developmental abnormalities. Continuing the pregnancy would have put me at serious risk, so the doctor recommended terminating it as soon as possible.”

Scott took the report. His hands were shaking so badly he could barely hold the pages.

“That decision should’ve been ours to make together.”

“I gave you chances.”

“When?”

“The night of my first follow-up, I told you the doctor wanted to speak with you. You said Vanessa needed to go over some data with you.

“The second time I started bleeding, I called you twelve times. Your phone was off because you were at an industry conference with Vanessa.

“Then, there was my prenatal appointment. I asked if you could stay, you said the project couldn’t be managed without you.”

As I went on, his face turned even paler.

By the time I finished, he had lowered his head, unable even to look me in the eye.

Vanessa picked up her purse and said in a soft voice, “Mrs. Clement, please don’t blame Dr. Scott for this. He was only doing what was best for the company.”

I turned to her.

“I’m talking to my husband. Since when do you answer for him?”

She bit her lower lip. Tears quickly filled her eyes.

Scott glanced at her almost instinctively.

It was such a small gesture, but whatever hope I still had left in him disappeared in that moment.

I had just lost our baby.

I was standing right in front of him. I just showed him my medical reports.

Yet his first instinct was still to worry about Vanessa’s feelings.

I smiled bitterly.

“Scott, I want a divorce.”

The other end of the line went quiet.A few seconds later, Vanessa snorted.“Dr. Natasha, if you can’t stand losing, just say so. Dr. Scott chose me to take over from you because I earned it, not because I stole anything from you. “After you got pregnant, you became paranoid about everything. You kept rechecking perfectly normal data over and over.“Dr. Scott was right. In the state you were in, you had no business doing research.”I listened without getting angry.“Vanessa.”“What?”“On day six of Group Seven, why did you use an image from Group Five for the raw fluorescence data?”Her breath caught.I continued, “Why did you remove the highest inflammatory marker value from Sample Three? “When Mouse Two died unexpectedly, you recorded it as a procedural error, but the necropsy report says it died from a severe cytokine storm. Do you even know what you’re doing?”She was silent for quite a while. When she finally spoke again, her voice was trembling.“Dr. Scott approve

Scott stood there as the last of the color drained from his face. After a long silence, he said softly, “Nothing ever happened between Vanessa and me.”“That doesn’t matter.”“Really. Nothing happened.”He stepped closer, anxious to explain. “She only borrowed my watch while she was working in the lab. The thing with the shirt was an accident. I never touched her.”I looked at him and felt nothing.“Scott, don’t you get it? Whether you slept with her or not doesn’t matter anymore. Our marriage was over when you chose her over me again and again.”Whatever hope had been left in his eyes slowly disappeared.“I just cared too much about the project.”“Did you?”I pulled out my phone and opened the raw data Evan had sent me.“Then, explain why you helped her delete this.”Scott’s expression froze.I held the screen up in front of him.“That’s your account. These edits were made while you were logged into the company’s system. Don’t tell me you had no idea what was happening

I copied all the files onto an external hard drive, then contacted Evan. When he answered and heard my voice, he was silent for more than ten seconds.“Dr. Natasha, you finally called me.”I asked how much evidence he still had.“A lot. Vanessa changed the data at least four times after she took over the project. Every time, Dr. Scott told us to go along with it.”“Did anyone object?”“Anyone who did was transferred out.”I closed my eyes for a moment.“Why didn’t you report it before?”Evan gave a bitter laugh.“Legal told us that anyone who leaked confidential project information would be sued for everything they had. You founded the project. I thought you were the one person who could do something about it.“Then, Dr. Scott told us you weren’t doing well because of the pregnancy and that we shouldn’t bother you with anything related to the company.”So, Scott had not just convinced me that I was unwell. He had been telling everyone else the same thing.I hung up and s

I temporarily moved in with my friend, Patricia Barker.Patricia was an OB-GYN. She was the only person who knew about the procedure. When she opened the door and saw me, she did not ask any questions. She simply took my suitcase and brought me a bowl of warm oatmeal.I managed two bites before my stomach suddenly turned.By the time I made it to the bathroom, I was throwing up so hard that my whole body shook.Patricia crouched beside me and rubbed my back.“Just cry it out.”I told her I did not want to.However, as soon as I said that, tears fell into the sink.I cried for a long time that night. It was not because I had left Scott.I was grieving the baby who would never get the chance to be born and the woman I had been for the past ten years—the one who had believed she was loved. When I woke up the next morning, I had ninety-nine missed calls on my phone.Every one of them was from Scott. He kept texting me.[Where are you?][Did you take your medication with you

His head snapped up.“What did you say?” I pulled the divorce agreement from the coffee table drawer.I had already signed my name at the bottom. The house was my separate property from before the marriage. The company shares would be handled according to our prenup. The rest of our marital assets could be divided through our attorneys.I was not asking for anything more than I was entitled to.I did not want anything more.Scott stared at the agreement. His shock eventually gave way to anger.“Are you divorcing me to punish me over the baby?”“No.”“Then, this is about Vanessa?”“No, it isn’t.”I looked at the man I had loved for ten years, surprised by how calm I sounded.“Because I don’t love you anymore.”The words seemed to knock the breath out of him.A few seconds later, he forced a strained smile. “Natasha, do you even hear what you’re saying?”“I do.”“You gave up a job in another country to marry me. You sold the house your parents left you to keep the com
