Chapter 3

작가: Busy King
Scott and I met when we were both doctoral students in the School of Life Sciences at the University of Cloudmont.

He specialized in computational modeling, while my field was cancer immunology.

He knew nothing about wet-lab research, and I could not code, yet we somehow ended up as partners on an interdisciplinary project led by our advisors.

Scott was so broke back then that he could not afford a decent laptop. Every day, he carried around an old machine that took ten minutes just to boot up so he could run his analyses.

The first time I saw him, he was crouched in the hallway of the research building, trying to fix it.

His screen had gone blue. The look on his face was grim.

I lent him my spare laptop. He used it for three whole months.

When he returned it, I found a handwritten note and a strawberry-flavored candy tucked inside the laptop bag.

The note contained only one line.

[Natasha, when I get rich, I’ll treat you to the most expensive meal in the world.]

Later, he did get rich.

However, it had been a long time since we had a meal together.

During the most difficult stage of the project, our experiments failed seventeen times in a row.

I spent my days growing cell cultures and my nights revising our protocols. Whenever exhaustion caught up with me, I slept for two hours on a cot in the lab.

For three months, Scott lived on takeout with me.

The night our eighteenth attempt finally succeeded, we sat outside the lab sharing a protein bar.

Out of nowhere, he asked, “Natasha, how would you feel about spending the rest of your life with me?”

Still chewing the protein bar, I mumbled, “Is this really the most you can put into a proposal?”

He pulled a cheap silver ring from his pocket and slipped it onto my finger.

“It is now, but someday I’ll make it all up to you.”

I believed in the future he promised me.

I gave up my position at an overseas research institute and returned home with Scott to establish Sprout Biotech.

Vanessa was the first student I mentored after coming back.

Her family struggled financially. During her first year of graduate school, she could not even afford a second lab coat.

I admired her determination, so I brought her onto Sprout’s core research team.

Later, I personally helped her revise every application she submitted, from her scholarship and outstanding graduate applications to her first research paper.

During the tenth week of my pregnancy, there was a minor leak in the lab.

Although my level of exposure was extremely low, the doctor still advised me to stay away from high-risk environments for the time being.

I did not want to leave.

Project Sprout had entered a critical stage of animal testing. Even the slightest discrepancy in the data could invalidate five years of work.

For the first time, Scott lost his temper during a company meeting.

“If we lose the project, we can start over. But if we lose the baby, what are we supposed to do?”

In front of everyone, he took away my access card to the lab and ordered me to go home and rest.

After the meeting, he held me and promised that I would only be away for a few months. Once the baby was born, I could return whenever I wanted.

When I asked who would take over the project, he answered without hesitation, “Vanessa was trained by you. She understands your approach better than anyone.”

I had to admit that Vanessa was brilliant and well suited to take over my work.

In the end, I gave in.

Scott gently stroked my hair.

“Focus on taking care of yourself and the baby. Don’t worry about the project. I’ll keep an eye on everything.”

From that day on, I stopped asking about the project.

The other end of the line went quiet.A few seconds later, Vanessa snorted.“Dr. Natasha, if you can’t stand losing, just say so. Dr. Scott chose me to take over from you because I earned it, not because I stole anything from you. “After you got pregnant, you became paranoid about everything. You kept rechecking perfectly normal data over and over.“Dr. Scott was right. In the state you were in, you had no business doing research.”I listened without getting angry.“Vanessa.”“What?”“On day six of Group Seven, why did you use an image from Group Five for the raw fluorescence data?”Her breath caught.I continued, “Why did you remove the highest inflammatory marker value from Sample Three? “When Mouse Two died unexpectedly, you recorded it as a procedural error, but the necropsy report says it died from a severe cytokine storm. Do you even know what you’re doing?”She was silent for quite a while. When she finally spoke again, her voice was trembling.“Dr. Scott approve

Scott stood there as the last of the color drained from his face. After a long silence, he said softly, “Nothing ever happened between Vanessa and me.”“That doesn’t matter.”“Really. Nothing happened.”He stepped closer, anxious to explain. “She only borrowed my watch while she was working in the lab. The thing with the shirt was an accident. I never touched her.”I looked at him and felt nothing.“Scott, don’t you get it? Whether you slept with her or not doesn’t matter anymore. Our marriage was over when you chose her over me again and again.”Whatever hope had been left in his eyes slowly disappeared.“I just cared too much about the project.”“Did you?”I pulled out my phone and opened the raw data Evan had sent me.“Then, explain why you helped her delete this.”Scott’s expression froze.I held the screen up in front of him.“That’s your account. These edits were made while you were logged into the company’s system. Don’t tell me you had no idea what was happening

I copied all the files onto an external hard drive, then contacted Evan. When he answered and heard my voice, he was silent for more than ten seconds.“Dr. Natasha, you finally called me.”I asked how much evidence he still had.“A lot. Vanessa changed the data at least four times after she took over the project. Every time, Dr. Scott told us to go along with it.”“Did anyone object?”“Anyone who did was transferred out.”I closed my eyes for a moment.“Why didn’t you report it before?”Evan gave a bitter laugh.“Legal told us that anyone who leaked confidential project information would be sued for everything they had. You founded the project. I thought you were the one person who could do something about it.“Then, Dr. Scott told us you weren’t doing well because of the pregnancy and that we shouldn’t bother you with anything related to the company.”So, Scott had not just convinced me that I was unwell. He had been telling everyone else the same thing.I hung up and s

I temporarily moved in with my friend, Patricia Barker.Patricia was an OB-GYN. She was the only person who knew about the procedure. When she opened the door and saw me, she did not ask any questions. She simply took my suitcase and brought me a bowl of warm oatmeal.I managed two bites before my stomach suddenly turned.By the time I made it to the bathroom, I was throwing up so hard that my whole body shook.Patricia crouched beside me and rubbed my back.“Just cry it out.”I told her I did not want to.However, as soon as I said that, tears fell into the sink.I cried for a long time that night. It was not because I had left Scott.I was grieving the baby who would never get the chance to be born and the woman I had been for the past ten years—the one who had believed she was loved. When I woke up the next morning, I had ninety-nine missed calls on my phone.Every one of them was from Scott. He kept texting me.[Where are you?][Did you take your medication with you

His head snapped up.“What did you say?” I pulled the divorce agreement from the coffee table drawer.I had already signed my name at the bottom. The house was my separate property from before the marriage. The company shares would be handled according to our prenup. The rest of our marital assets could be divided through our attorneys.I was not asking for anything more than I was entitled to.I did not want anything more.Scott stared at the agreement. His shock eventually gave way to anger.“Are you divorcing me to punish me over the baby?”“No.”“Then, this is about Vanessa?”“No, it isn’t.”I looked at the man I had loved for ten years, surprised by how calm I sounded.“Because I don’t love you anymore.”The words seemed to knock the breath out of him.A few seconds later, he forced a strained smile. “Natasha, do you even hear what you’re saying?”“I do.”“You gave up a job in another country to marry me. You sold the house your parents left you to keep the com

For the next few days, Scott did not call me once.On the fourth day after the procedure, I had just come home from a follow-up appointment at the hospital. My abdomen was still aching faintly.Scott set a thermos in front of me.“Vanessa heard you haven’t had much of an appetite lately, so she made you some broth.”I unscrewed the lid and was met with the sight of a layer of oil floating on top.The doctor had warned me not to consume anything greasy so soon after the procedure, as it could increase the risk of bleeding.Vanessa studied biology, not medicine. It was understandable that she did not know that. However, Scott should have.My discharge instructions had been sitting on the coffee table. He had not read them even once.I closed the thermos.“No, thank you.”Vanessa stood nearby, looking hurt.“Mrs. Clement, I spent three hours making it.”“You can drink it yourself.”Scott’s expression immediately darkened.“Natasha, do you always have to be so dismissive of o
