Chapter 2

Author: Bowl of Rice
The landlord and the new prospective tenant exchanged an awkward glance, mumbled a polite goodbye, and hurried off.

I curled up on the couch, staring at their latest posts on social media.

Right after landing, Adrian and Maya went straight to the exact coffee shop from the food reel, laughing hysterically into the camera. The Airbnb they booked was even the same one I had shared in the group chat days ago.

So, they had seen my messages. They just didn't want to reply.

I frantically wiped away the moisture welling up in the corners of my eyes, blocked their feeds, and stood up to pack my things for the move.

Four days later, Adrian called me.

"Emery, are you off work?

"Maya and I just landed, and we brought you back some souvenirs. Let's go check out the new place together. Didn't you say you had something important to tell me?"

I glanced out the window at the pouring rain.

"Yeah. But it's hard to catch a ride in this rain. Swing by and pick me up on your way."

Silence on the other end.

After a long moment, Maya's timid voice came through the phone.

"Emery, can you just call a rideshare to the new place yourself?

"Adrian's cooking for me at my place right now. If he drives over to get you, it's just going to be out of the way in all this traffic."

My tone dropped cold.

"Didn't he just say he landed? Then let's reschedule."

Without another word, I hung up on them.

Adrian's text popped up immediately: [Don't lose your temper at Maya over something so trivial. I'm coming to pick you up right now.]

It made me laugh out loud.

[Don't bother. Besides, it's the first time I'm ever hearing that you know how to cook.]

[Let's push it to another day, I don't feel like going out today.]

Adrian didn't reply.

Two hours later, the doorbell was hammered on frantically.

Adrian shouted my name from the hallway.

I yanked the door open, my brows knitted together.

"Did you even read my text? I said I didn't want to go out today."

Before I could say anything else, Adrian grabbed my arm and dragged me out of the house.

"Stop throwing a tantrum. Maya had a stomachache on the plane. I was just making her some chicken soup.

"I tried to tell her to stay home and rest, but when she saw that you were mad, she insisted on coming along. You need to talk to her, or she won't be able to rest properly."

I stayed silent, yanking my arm free from his grip and rubbing my reddened wrist.

I grabbed my bag and followed Adrian downstairs.

I didn't even glance at the front passenger seat, moving straight to the back and sliding in with practiced familiarity.

It was because I knew for a fact Maya would take the front.

Sure enough, seeing that I didn't fight for it, Maya twisted around from the passenger seat and offered a sheepish smile.

"Emery, sorry about this.

"I'm feeling so awful, I just didn't want to move. Thanks for being cool with taking the back."

I murmured a flat affirmative, letting that count as my reply.

Noticing my icy attitude, Adrian shot me an annoyed glance.

While driving, he tried to smooth things over.

"Emery, Maya was just worried we'd have bad blood over this trip thing. She felt sick and still came along just to explain herself.

"Are you... Going to say something?"

I leaned my head against the car window and answered flatly, "Nothing to say."

My blunt reply left Adrian speechless.

He offered an awkward laugh and turned back to chat with Maya about something else instead.

As they kept talking, the conversation drifted right back to their trip.

"Adrian, do you remember when we fed the pigeons by Green Lake?"

"How could I forget? Those pigeons swarmed all over me. I nearly fell into the lake! And remember when we tie-dyed the shirt? You got dye all over my face!"

"You have some nerve bringing that up! You ruined my dress. I couldn't wear it ever again!"

…

They went back and forth.

Every word cutting straight into my ears. It felt no different from being stabbed with needles.

Once Adrian finally grew tired of talking, he seemed to suddenly remember that he had a girlfriend sitting in the back seat.

"Emery, maybe next time the three of us can take a trip to Tibet.

"Didn't you say work has been stressing you out lately and you wanted a real break? By then..."

I didn't want to listen to another word, cutting him off cold.

"We're here, let's get out."

Maya clutched the envelope tightly, suddenly wrapping her arms around me. She sobbed with deep, ragged heartbreak. It was as if she were trying to cry out all the grievances and regrets that had piled up over the years. She buried her face in my shoulder, her voice shook uncontrollably.Over and over again, she mumbled, "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry, Emery, I'm sorry…"It wasn't until I went through all of this that I realized how good you were to me. Can we still…?""There’s no 'us' anymore."I calmly cut her off."From now on, it's just you and me."Gently but firmly, I pushed her away from my embrace, looking down at her tear-smeared makeup and her humbled, broken face."I hope you're happy in your new marriage, but that's where it ends."I won't stay for the banquet reception; I've got places to be. Goodbye."With that, I loosened my grip and turned to walk away.Just as I took a few steps, a familiar voice called out from behind me."Emery."It was Adrian.Maya let go of

For my next travel destination, I told no one.I went to Tibet. In that place closest to the sky, I witnessed the most devout prostrations and gazed at the towering, endless snow-capped mountains. Under the heavy red walls of the Potala Palace, I listened to the deep, resonant chanting and the turning prayer wheels.I suddenly felt that those lingering grudges over jealousy and betrayal were as insignificant as dust.I knew what I needed to do when I got back.Instead of returning to my hometown for a safe, steady job as my parents expected, I reorganized my resume and applied to cities much further away.About two years later, during an industry collaboration exhibition, I ran into an ex-colleague, Nicholas West, from my former company. We exchanged a few pleasantries and chatted about our current work.He suddenly brought up Maya."Do you remember that vendor complaint right before you left? The one Maya handled."I paused for a second, somewhat surprised. To be honest, I

"I've been crushed under your thumb for eighteen years! Eighteen years! Am I not allowed to fight for myself even once?"Maya pointed straight at my face, her tears mixing with spit."You've always had it so easy, always one-upping me at everything. But I'm doing pretty well for myself now, too! I've got a decent job, I've worked my way up to management, and I know how to dress. I can even recognize all those luxury designer brands you used to have lying around, the ones I couldn’t even name back then!"Why does everyone always like you instead of me?"I looked at her and didn't bother pulling any punches.I fired back. "Still don't get it? Because you're an ungrateful leech."Maya choked up, completely speechless.I didn't plan on stopping, pressing right on."You've been clinging to my back like a parasite, living off my blood and flesh. After taking all my help, you don't even remember a single good thing I did for you, and instead, you're always plotting to stab me in the

I never thought Adrian and Maya would actually track me down, probably after pressuring my parents to tell them where I was. When I pushed open the courtyard gate and saw the two of them standing there, I let out a heavy, helpless sigh, but still led them over to sit at the wooden table under the veranda.Adrian spoke up first."I'm sorry, Emery. I know I did a lot of things that upset you, and I've really done some reflecting."With that, he pulled a key out of his pants pocket and slid it across the wooden table toward me."I got this key back from Maya, and now it's yours."I'm going to keep a proper distance from her from now on and stop crossing any lines. Take the key, and when this trip is over, let's head back and get married and make it official. Okay?"As soon as he finished, Adrian turned sideways and gave a sharp nudge with his elbow to Maya, who had been sitting in dead silence beside him.Maya's complexion was awful, clearly showing how reluctant she was to have

Stepping off the plane in California, I switched off airplane mode.My phone screen immediately lit up with a flood of notifications. At the very top was Adrian, with a dozen frantic texts in a row.[Did you move? Why didn't you tell me? Where are you?][What’s that post on your feed supposed to mean? My parents are both calling and asking about it!][Emery, pick up your phone!]…I ignored every single one. Instead, for the first time in forever, I noticed a fresh message pop up in our three-person group chat.Adrian: [@Emery My mom is asking about us getting married again. Maya’s asking too. Why aren't you answering?]Right below it were two voice memos sent by Maya. Not wanting to listen to her voice, I tapped the button to automatically convert them into text.Reading between the lines, she was still putting on a weeping act.[If this really doesn't work out, I can always call Emery later and apologize...][It's all my fault. You two are about to get married, and you'r

My chest burned with a sharp, heavy ache, and I let out a light laugh.Right in front of both of them, I picked up the gift box and tossed it straight into the trash can."I don't want the gift."And I don't want the key, either."I looked at Adrian and Maya one last time."As for the two of you, I don't want either of you anymore."With that, I grabbed my bag, yanked open the apartment door, and walked out.Adrian acted like he couldn't handle it anymore, chasing after me and yelling at the top of his lungs, “Emery, what exactly do you want? We've begged you this much, isn't that enough?"I threw a cold look over my shoulder at him.My heart had turned so cold I didn't even have words left to say, so I just kept walking. After that day, Adrian and Maya didn't reach out to me again, not even through private messages. In the three-person group chat, the two of them were still chatting up a storm, but my name was never brought up again. I didn't send another message either.W
