MICHIGAN POV
Why is this happening to me?
"Not once, not twice, but three good times that I'll be facing this issue. This is not how I visualized my future with my husband. This is not how, God."
I sat alone in my room, staring at a photo of a baby in his mother's arms.
Her face filled with Joy, her husband by her side, welcoming the newborn into the world.
"Why can't we experience this joy too, God? " My eyes came wet with tears flowing out of it. I couldn't hold back the pain I was feeling in my heart.
"I can't stand this miscarriage anymore. I want to have my baby and bring joy to this home."
It's just so unbearable.
The continuous miscarriage has been nothing but a problem for my husband and I.
This has been troubling me deeply, but not as much as it has been troubling Damien.
"Where's Damien?" I asked no one in particular, rising from the bed to find my husband.
Damien Flores is a successful businessman and a billionaire. He's the love of my life and my rock.
He has been by my side since we got married, when I had my three miscarriages, till now. That man has been my everything. But it pains me to the core that I'm unable to give him the happiness he deserves.
Leaving the room, I carefully made my way down to the study room to find my husband.
"Maybe he's there attending to work, " I assumed, walking down the path.
Only for someone's voice to get my attention at once from the room two doors away from me.
"Is this how you'll continue?"
"Father-in-law?" My heart sank in fear, drawing closer to the room.
Mr Flores, president of the most popular empire in the state. He has a high reputation and won't stand anything or anyone being a stain in his path.
I leaned closer to the wall, hearing my father-in-law yelling at my husband, Damien.
"I didn't know he was around. When did he arrive?"
"I've told you about this father. We'll have a child when the time comes," Damien said to his father.
But my father-in-law won't budge.
"When will that be, Damien? I want to know when. This is the same word you gave me two years ago and then your wife went ahead to lose the child."
"You're making it sound like it's her fault!"
"Then who should I blame? Myself? Damien, I am a man with a high reputation in this country. Aren't you bothered about what people will say to me about this?!"
My heart came pounding on hearing them fighting. The thought of going in to stop them crossed my mind. But I feared that it would only lead to another issue. So, I stood back.
"You remember Henry? The one that got married a year ago? Well, his wife just gave birth today. His father told me today."
"And you decided to share it with me? Well congratulations to the family, I'm happy for them."
"Being sarcastic won't hide the truth here son. I need a grandchild! I'm not getting any younger," He reminded me.
"This is why I wanted to bring you a wife, but you felt you know best. Now look at where we are today. Childless."
My heart sank deeply. I slowly dragged my feet from the room, feeling nothing but sadness flowing in me.
"I've told you, father. The child will come when it's time."
"Perhaps when I'm dead, 'cause I don't see any sign," My father in law said.
His words ate me up, sending me running.
Why me?
.
I laid down in bed, thinking about my case and my father-in-law's words. The fear of being separated from Damien terrified me to the core.
"What if he gives me a divorce paper because of this?" I feared.
Just then, Damien stepped into the room to check up on me. His arms fell on me, with a kiss on the cheek.
"How are you, my love?" He asked, acting like everything was okay. But I know what happened.
Sad, I sat up to face my husband, bringing up a suggestion that could solve our problem once and for all.
"Let's get a surrogate to bear our child."
"Are you crazy? Me, agree to that? Never!" Damien refused my idea, showing his disapproval of it.
"Do you know how that will affect me? I'm the son of a very popular businessman in the state. Do you want the media to pick up this news and mock me? No! I won't allow my reputation to be tarnished! Surrogate? Never!" He spat out.
"Hear me out, Damien. I know this is hard for us, but it's the only way to solve this problem. It's the only way your father can be at peace with you, " I said.
Damien's eyes flashed at me. He realized that I overheard his conversation with his father.
I pleaded with him and he had no choice but to accept.
"This must not get to the media. It'll only be between us and the surrogate."
"I promise," I assured Damien.
But I don't plan on going to meet a stranger outside to carry this work for me. I need someone I can trust with this. Someone who understands my pain and is willing to support my home.
"Will you help me bear my child, Clara?" I said, talking to my younger sister.
Clara's eyes widened on hearing my request.
"What?! Michigan, can you hear yourself? You want me to carry your husband's heir? I... I can't do that." She swayed her head at me.
But she's the only one I can turn to on this. I have no other person to help me out.
"Please, Clara. Do this for me, I beg of you," I pleaded, almost going on my knees, but Clara stopped me from doing so.
With a sigh, she said, "Look Sis, bearing your husband's child is... I don't know how to put it."
She rubbed her neck, showing her discomfort with the idea.
"But if this is what you want, then fine. I'll help you."
"Thank you, Clara."
I hugged my sister, feeling pleased with her agreement.
I know she'll never betray me. She's the perfect solution to my problem.
MICHIGAN POV"Are you mad? Why Clara?" Damien yelled at me.He has been pacing about since I told him that Clara would be the one to carry his child. He hasn't been happy since then."This is worse than having a stranger carry our child. Why choose your sister?""Damien, please listen to me. Clara will be the perfect mother to carry your child. She has agreed to do this for us," I tried to explain to Damien, but he wouldn't listen. He kept ranting about his reputation and how foolish my plan was."This will be a disaster to my image.""Yes, that's all that you'll be thinking about. Your image, your reputation... Have you ever stopped to think about me? About what I'm going through?" I asked, getting teary."Three times I've lost my pregnancy. Have you ever wondered how people look at me when they hear that I lost another child? Do you think I don't have a reputation like you?""Michigan, it's not like that.""I'm trying to give you a child, so you won't be a laughing stock in people's
MICHIGAN POV I've been serving my husband and my sister like a servant. Damien's love for me has finally gone weak, and I won't blame him for it.After spending that intimate night with Clara, he has drawn so close to her that he protects her like a lion would do to his mate.Damien never leaves her sight. He attends to Clara's wants and desires without blinking. And as for me, I'm now my kid's sister's maid.Clara now bosses me around like she's older than me. At times I get mad at her nonsense and remind her of her place as my kid sister. But Clara has grown wings. She no longer considers me as her big sister. I'm more of like a slave to her.Soon, great news came in from Clara. She reveals that she's pregnant and my husband couldn't hold back his joy by embracing her.I felt pleased to hear the news. Damien is going to be a father. But my heart shattered when I saw Damien kissing Clara's face with joy, right in front of me. He didn't care about the fact that I was standing right b
MICHIGAN POVThe beginning of my torment has begun. My whole life and my world has been taken from me.Damien and Clara now rule over me like I'm some servant picked from the slum. They never cease the chance to bully me.My husband went behind my back and married my kid sister. And Clara isn't ashamed of herself. If truly she loved me like she always claimed then, she would have stood against Damien's desire to have her.Or am I seeing it the wrong way?Yes, it's not Damien's fault. It's my fault. I failed to see Clara's true nature from the start. It all makes sense now.I still remember when Damien and I just got married. I had called Clara over to stay with us but she grumbled over it and later agreed, saying she was doing it because of me.That same day, Damien complained about her clinginess, and I blindly took it as her way of trying to be close to her brother in law.But that was a lie.Clara has been eyeing Damien for long and I didn't see it early. She was just waiting for t
MICHIGAN POVAfter so long, the appointed time finally came. It's nine months at last, and soon Clara will go into labor.Despite the fact that she's heavily pregnant, Clara doesn't seize the opportunity to trouble me.With her condition, Damien became more protective of Clara, shielding her like a fence from any eye, including me.He had to stop me from attending to her, hiring a maid to watch over Clara instead. According to him, my presence will bring bad luck to his child that's about to come into the world. I felt hurt at that statement but pleased that I didn't have to do anything for that devilish sister of mine. I felt somehow free, but not too free.Damien didn't stop harassing me in the house. Whenever I want to touch some things that belong to Clara, which she left around, Damien will spark at me, like I possess some kind of evil in me, and push me aside.I had to take it in since that's what I've been facing. But this bad luck he pushed was the same person who helped Cla
MICHIGAN The next day I attended to my usual chores, as the maid in my own house, I was busy mobbing the house when I passed Clara's room, she was playing with the child. Even if things didn't go as I planned I was glad at least I was able to bring happiness to the household. I made Clara be the mother of my husband's child even if it cost me my happiness. While I reminisce on my life Damien came in. “Michigan!” He yelled my name making me wonder if I've done something wrong again. “Yes Damien?” I replied, I know he might be mad at me for standing at his door staring at his child. I was bad luck anyways, I've been warned several times not to go close to his wife and child. “What are you doing here?” He asked, shooting a wicked glance at me. “I'm mopping,” I said gesturing with the mpping stick in my grip. “We need to talk!” He declared. “About what?” I asked my heart pounding heavily, I know it wouldn't be something good. But instead of replying he walked to my grabbing my wri
MICHIGANI went back to my old house, I wasn't a rich lady before I met Damien, so I'm sure living poor again won't be too hard. I started cleaning up the dusty house. Every room I entered I could see the picture of myself and Clara. My late parents' pictures were also hung on the wall. I cried. My mother wouldn't want this to happen, for me and my sister to be apart, have I failed as a senior sister?A particular picture caught my eyes, a picture of Clara when she graduated from college. I remember then I was still earning little and she needed to pay her tuition fee and she had to stay in her room crying until I came in.“What's the matter, Clara , why are you crying?” I asked immediately sitting next to her.“Don’t worry about it Michigan, I don't want to bother you, you've been doing a lot for me,” she said, still sobbing.“Come on Clara, you're my little sister and also my responsibility, it's my duty to help you” I caressed her hair.“It's my tuition fee Michigan, I'm due for p
MICHIGAN Celia's smile widened. "I'm glad to hear that. I'd like to offer you the position, and I think you'll be a valuable asset to our company. When would you be able to start?""I could start as soon as next week, if that works for you," I said, trying to hide my excitement. Celia nodded."That's perfect. We'll get you set up with all the necessary paperwork and get you started on training. Welcome to the team!" she said, extending her hand again. I shook it, feeling a rush of happiness and relief. I stepped outside the office building, feeling a sense of euphoria. I've done it! I'd gotten the job! I took a deep breath of the fresh air and pulled out my phone. I dialed Armando's number, my fingers trembling with excitement."Hello?" Armando's voice sounded tinny through the phone."Armando!" I exclaimed, unable to contain my joy. "I got the job! I'm so excited!"There was a pause on the other end of the line, and then Armando let out a whoop of joy. "That's amazing, I'm so proud
MICHIGAN Just then, the woman who had started all of this stepped forward, her eyes blazing with anger. "How dare you talk to me like that?" she spat at Armando. "You're just her lapdog, following her around like a lost puppy.”Armando's face turned red, but he remained calm. "I'm not a lapdog. I'm a friend. And you're being rude and disrespectful, not just to me, but to Michigan as well." His voice was firm, but his tone was measured. "You should be ashamed of yourself."“If there's anyone who should be ashamed is your girlfriend here who hired her own sister to sleep with her husband and was kicked out of the house. Looks like you're the reason she left her wealthy husband, you're just a woman in a man's body,” she taunted, erupting more laughter. His voice is deadly calm. "If I hadn't come along, who knows what you would have done to her. Leave her alone before I call the police.." The women hung their heads, their eyes downcast. I felt a surge of gratitude toward Armando, for sta
