I'm a werewolf

Lona's POV

“Lona, I have exciting news to tell you!” Kate said excitedly.

I hadn't seen her yet, but her voice had come.

She ran from the door to my desk.

"Do you wanna hear?" Kate excitedly smacked her hand on my desk to signify that I couldn't look at the book anymore, but look at her instead.

“Do you wanna hear it?” Kate asked again.

I looked up at her and sighed. Even if I shook my head, she still talked non stop so I'd better say yes.

Kate was an extrovert, she wanted to share her feelings and all the things she knew with the people around her. As Kate's best friend, I was the first person she wanted to tell.

"What makes you so happy?" I calmly asked.

In order for Kate to finish her story as quickly as possible, I needed to be neither too excited nor too bored with that story.

“Do you know how Mia explained why she dropped out of the exam with her professor Johnson?”

"No!" I shrugged.

Mia and I were not close at all, how did I know what she said to professor Johnson?

Seeing that I wasn't curious at all, Kate quickly said, “Mia said she encountered a very, very large wolf, that wolf is many times larger than a normal wolf.” Kate said as she spread her arms wide to describe the size of the wolf. “She was scared to the point of fainting, and when she woke up, it was already past exam time." Kate laughed. 

I nodded, trying not to care too much about that.

“She really knows how to make up stories but how could she make up such a mythical story.”  Kate shook her head. “There's no forest near our city, how could the wolves get lost here? Ridiculous!”

I smiled, saying nothing.

“She even said that the wolf was many times larger than normal wolves! Why didn't she say she missed the exam because she saved the world?" Kate added.

She was just focusing on mocking Mia without noticing my face turned white.

"Mia actually saw a big wolf?” I doubted. “Are you sure about that?" 

"Don't you believe her too?" Kate said in a high pitched voice. "All around our city are small cities and densely populated towns, there are absolutely no forests and mountains, and even the zoo in the city doesn't even have wolves! How could a wolf appear in the city?"

"So you don't believe her?" I whispered.

"I don't understand why she came up with such an unreasonable excuse." Kate paused for a moment, biting her lip in thought. "Wolves are very dangerous animals. If a wolf accidentally gets lost in our city, someone will be attacked and the authorities will quickly issue a danger warning, right?"

I nodded slightly to agree with her point of view, but the truth was that I was extremely nervous. My hands clenched tightly, trying not to make a strange expression.

"I also heard Mia say that she followed a girl and suddenly the girl shifted into a wolf, scaring her to faint on the spot." The girl at the next table heard that we were talking about Mia and quickly turned her head and chatted with us.

"A girl shifts into a wolf." Kate shouted, eyes wide.

The girl at the next table hurriedly put a finger to her lips, signaling Kate to keep her voice down.

"Don't speak so loudly." She frowned. "Mia told me not to tell anyone or people would think she was crazy."

"The one who can shift into a wolf, that is, werewolf?" Kate laughed. "She really knows how to make up stories."

"Just keep your voice low." The girl at the next table tugged on Kate's arm.

"Mia isn't crazy." Kate laughed out loud. "No, She is not crazy, she is very smart, very, very smart. Professor Johnson is very strict but he likes weird things. If Mia uses an ordinary excuse to justify her mistake, he will definitely disagree. On the contrary, this crazy reason may arouse the interest of the professor, maybe she will have a chance to retake the exam."

"I don't think so. Mia must have been so tired from preparing for the exam that she was hallucinating. She wasn't lying on purpose." The lady on the next table justified Mia.

Those two continued to argue but I didn't hear anything. One word repeated in my head.

Werewolf.

The appearance of a werewolf in human society would certainly cause a panic and terror. Humans would probably find a way to kill werewolves, creatures that they thought were dangerous for them.

My head was filled with terrifying scenarios. My whole body trembled, my body temperature increased and my hands soaked with sweat.

I was losing control. I needed to leave right away.

"I suddenly remembered I forgot an important thing at home, I have to go home to get it." I said hastily and grabbed my school bag and ran out of the classroom.

"Class is about to start!" Kate shouted.

I could hear Kate's voice when I was outside the door but I wasn't in the mood to respond.

I had to get out of here, as quickly as possible.

If I didn't regain my composure, I would shift right in the classroom in front of all my classmates.

More than anyone else, I knew Mia's words were true.

Because… I was the werewolf she saw.

My ancestors were weak werewolves, they were bullied by other wolves and had to hide in human society. They married humans, creating hybrids between humans and werewolves.

My family was more human than wolf. They only shifted on the night of Full Moon, they didn't even have a mind link nor predetermined mate.

On the night of the Full Moon, my whole family would leave the city and go deep into the forest. That was why we could live peacefully in human society.

I thought I would be like the rest of my family, but that was not the case.

I was different from them.
